Hey everyone! Are you curious about using a phone for product photography? I’ve always been more comfortable with my camera, but I decided to challenge myself and see how phone photography stacks up. In this video, I photograph three products-a cuticle oil, a lavender candle, and a ring-using both my phone and camera for comparison.
First, I take simple "plain shots" with natural lighting: a black coaster and riser for the cuticle oil, and a piece of paper for the ring. Then, I take "styled shots," adding props and adjusting lighting.
I noticed some key differences in light, contrast, and white balance between the phone and camera shots, especially because I didn't edit them to match perfectly. For the cuticle oil plain shot, the results were similar. The candle might've benefited from focus stacking with the camera. The ring's macro shot on the phone had more noise and gritty details.
In the styled shots, the similarities continued. The camera shot of the cuticle oil had smoother transitions between lights and darks. My favorite candle shot came from the phone, thanks to its vibrant colors and cohesion, although the camera shot had a softer look due to depth of field.
Overall, I'm pretty impressed with how close the results were. The phone photos could be even better with advanced features like ProRes or raw. If you have tips for using your phone for product photography, drop them in the comments below!
