I grew up in PSL. Still here, unfortunately. I was 16 when this happened, and had been sent the address to this party. If I hadn’t been down in the Florida keys with my friends family I likely would have gone. I knew of Tyler Hadley, he was what we refer to here in FL as a “baser”, or heavy drug user. Mark Andrews is one of my closest friends older brother. PSL is a very strange city, especially as a teen. There’s nothing to do but cause trouble and party. RIP Blake and MaryJo, she was a teacher at my elementary school and a very sweet lady.

Why do I feel that "good" parenting is such a slim line! Too much or too little of so many things ( discipline, guidance, involvement, leniency, expectations, disinterest, etc.) as well as fielding medical decisions and meanwhile working what may be a full time job yourself! Often both parents won't even agree on what is right! Makes my head hurt!

Thank you for your analysis! There sure is a lot going on in this case. It's really unfortunate. A kid who showed signs of depression seems to have set off his mother's fears and insecurities and I wonder if she went a little overboard. I think it's ridiculous to give your child HGH because you're worried they will be short and have low self esteem. Daily counseling and multiple medications at such a young age sounds like the mother needed more help dealing with her fear. It seems like all this kid has known is to take drugs to change the way he feels, soooooo what did he do? I think this case has so much more than just a teen who wanted to party. He has serious issues, and we can't really say what caused them. Sad all around.

The destructiveness at Tyler’s party reminded me of the party described in “Our Guys” by Bernard Lefkowitz, a 1997 book about the sexual assault of a mentally disabled girl by four high-school football players back in the eighties. The party wasn’t related to the assault, but was described in graphic detail to give another example of a culture where no one was ever held responsible for crimes if they were among the town’s elite (athletic, wealthy kids). Not that anyone can imagine a culture like that today, I’m sure.

As a teenager in the 80's I've been to some crazy parties where places were trashed much like this place. Lots of fighting too. Some dudes went to parties with fighting as their goal for the night. The police knew us by our first names because they broke up so many parties. Every Friday and Saturday there was a party somewhere. Being the 80's there were a lot of drugs and booze. I went to a party thrown by bikers and it got so crazy the house burned to the ground. Nobody wanted to call 911. Including the owner. The party was in the yard. Actually molly aka ecstasy does not work on people who lack real compassion. They don't feel any and can't feel the chemicals that cause that warm fuzzy love feelings. In normal people it works well because it helps bonding hormones and love. They'll get high but it's a different kind of high. Look up "Ecstasy doesn't work on sociopaths" on the internet. It's fascinating... Oh and magic hrooms also fail to cause the love and warmth on these individuals. They will party on them and get a completely different feeling. I know it's sad but some people will never be able to feel love and compassion like a normal person. Also id like to add that no one should ever take two. Not because you'll hurt others. But you will heat up too much, have a heart attack or something. Actually you should only take 1/2 of one pill if any at all. I mean some people are going to try things. I get it. But be responsible. It’s interesting how drugs can have such different effects on certain individuals. My understanding is that ecstasy is a drug that gives most the “Love everyone too much “ affect. Tyler would fit into the certain individual’s category. He loved his parents to death.
@rejaneoliveira5019
@rejaneoliveira5019 2 года назад
This is an extremely sad case. It makes me wonder if he would have committed this crime if drugs weren’t involved, namely the ecstasy he took before killing his parents. I am not saying that he did it because of the drugs but rather I feel that the combination of mental illness with drug use is always disastrous. The same goes for the party guests, would they behave in that reprehensible manner without the alcohol? I also think that supervision is paramount for teenagers, a lot of bad things can potentially be avoided if they properly supervised. Thank you for the wonderful review Dr. Grande.❤️
@bthomson
@bthomson 2 года назад
I'm afraid that what this case shows is that even with proper supervision ( his mother certainly tried her best!) some people will not be helped enough to avoid terrible outcomes! At what point could this tragedy have been stopped? Very few are sent to mental hospitals and even if they are they don't stay long!
@rejaneoliveira5019
@rejaneoliveira5019 2 года назад
@@bthomson That’s a good point. I agree with you, the parents did try to prevent bad outcomes, I wasn’t talking about them in my comment but more so in general terms. I don’t know if this tragedy could have been prevented. The only thing I can think of is the addition of drugs into this whole situation, which in my opinion always makes everything worse. But maybe that wouldn’t have changed the end result either. I occasionally cover for a psychiatric hospital and I see many acute cases. Like you said, that’s a temporary solution and most of the time it doesn’t really solve anything, it mainly just stabilizes the patients until they can move to another unit or be discharged. The real work is gradual and requires a lot of patience and consistency.

A liquid ton of testosterone coursing through his veins and (normal) teen fantasies about what it would actually be like to be in a fight with your dad? Sprinkle in some phone/internet withdrawal and narcissistic anger? He probably thought he was evil - but he was way _over_ focused upon as the family problem but at the same time likely neglected in numerous non-medical ways. Some of the smallest most boring towns I know had the worst drink and drug problems, I think parents want to settle down somewhere quiet at that point in their life and dont realise what a negative effect isolation has on teenagers. In my partying days I knew a guy in his early 20's who used to sit with his Mother and do ecstasy, small town problems. Actually now i think of it these little towns and villages also had a really high suicide problem of the under 30's as well which possibly is related to these issues.

Growing up in France, we all drank legally from age 16 on. We occasionally got drunk but it rarely degenerated into a drinking orgy. I was amazed when I saw how drunk American students could get as soon as they had the opportunity. I think it's healthier to integrate moderate drinking into a teen's life rather than going from strict prohibition to no boundary at all. From puritanism to excess.

Thank you Dr. Grande for yet another wonderful analysis. I remember this case when it happened back in the summer of 2011. I really have thought peer pressure along with a rather under-supported home environment where it came to feeling accepted, loved and encouraged were at work here...a small town, really just a collection of boring housing subdivisions, with no real community for teenage persons to fit in and feel like they matter.... those kind of environments will make teens become anxious all the more and feel like if they are not accepted by their peers, they are hopeless. I grew up in era before much home internet, let alone cell phones and social media so I really can not say how those might have played into the local teen culture, but I do recall in my time as one, early 90s, peer pressure was definitely present and it was very significant. And THAT aspect I think was key here...but I also see even as of 2022, articles I have read on this case was he showed no apparent remorse for his actions even after being sent to prison. (He claims now he does, but he also was shown to had signed many 'autographs' for other prisoners, plus writing "It's Hammer Time" on newspaper article cutouts on his own case....and was known as Hammer Boy in prison. So, the desperate need for acceptance never stopped.

What a sad case of parental homicide. This makes me wonder if the dynamic between the parents and the son was a situation of blurred boundaries and too much yes answers in life? If a kid/ child does not hear the word no when they are younger, then they may test the parents boundaries. Just as saying no too much can cause a teen to revolt. We can only speculate and ask questions about what went wrong in this family picture. Thank you 🤔❤🇺🇸
