People seem to not understand the footwear industry. Durability doesn't mean nobody will rebuy in the future. Leather vs synthetic isn't what you probably think it is. Manufacturing expenses don't dictate quality, it effects quantity. Shoes don't have a 'good' fit or a 'bad' fit, your foot either fits or doesn't; cobblers would make 'your shoe' just like a tailor used to make your clothes fit just you (thank american civil war for s/m/l and the world of averages based fitting for all). Durability only came after comfort, and usually at that expense. Leather will stretch and form, synthetics won't, it's a balancing act. In skateboard shoes, form is function. There were no 'skate shoe companies' really until the early 90s; before that they were tennis/basketball/handmedowns/etc being used for skating. Even if you made an incredibly precise fitting system shoe with incredibly durable and comfortable materials, if they don't look 'right' they won't go.
I used to hate reissues but if eS would just put the old Koston 1's open for anyone to make I would be soo happy if every shoe company started making Koston 1's. 😊
i had the lakai koston 1 from around 2010ish, they were not good. they looked right, and materials were ok but soles came unglued and detached long before they had any significant wear. never bought another pair of lakais
thps best tracks - police truck(dead kennedys), jerry was a racecar driver(primus), cyco vision(suicidal tendencies) i'd have to revisit thps2 soundtrack, but i def liked 'bring the noise'(anthrax/public enemy) and 'pin the tail on the donkey'(naughty by nature)
Savier > Cariuma Had the Savier Raliegh, Staba and Anderson shoes. Also had several pairs of the Nike SB E-cues. Super durable to the point where I'd feel like switching out of boredom after a few months. And because they were mostly rubber and synthetic, they didn't stretch, which was a problem due to how narrow they ran.
i had an almost double impact board for over ten years. i'm 6'3, 220, and never broke it. it was kinda sad and soggy and razor-tailed to death when i finally retired it, i had slid through several plies in several places. it was maybe $75 and i only ever bought one. if i had known they were that good i would've gotten 3 or so.
éS accel and penny 2. Best shoes I've had. Just shy of a year on my brown penny 2s still have tread, toetaps ripped a little have gooed them once so far. I usually get to skate 2 or 3 times a week and flip my board alot. I need to get around to making a review on the penny 2.
The one fatal flaw with the CT-IV is that over time the Nitrolite midsole foam deteriorates and completely falls apart. It takes years though so it's only an issue if you were keeping them deadstock like I was. But also basically with all Globes, the midsole usually comes completely unglued and falls off.
@@FATFORKS had issues with soles ungluing with dvs and lakai, not globe that i can remember. i was skating pretty heavy when i had them, so i couldn't even estimate the period of time they lasted but it was noticeably considerably more than any other shoe. just so many layers of tech/materials, they were built to skate. and they looked sick and were super comfortable, i liked the way the tongue and collar were connected. i'd imagine if you weren't skating them, they would last several years
@@diplenski Yeah that's valid. I copped a bunch of them a few years ago when they were rereleased. I hope I can get through them before the nitrolite goes.
I think rubber grip is the answer here in regards to shoe durability, I’ve been using it for a year and love it. But it’s important to remember that even though I haven’t worn through the suede upper of my shoes at all, I’m now getting to the point where the outsole is starting to wear thin, and I’ll have to pick up some new shoes again. We should definitely push to improve how long skate shoes last, from a consumer value, as well as an environmental perspective, but we’re constantly rubbing our shoes against abrasives like griptape and concrete, and there’s just nothing that can withstand that constant belt sander treatment forever. (I think the big advantage of rubber grip is actually that you can get away using less durable shoes, when you physically can’t wear through your upper then what’s the point of getting a shoe with a suede upper? Why not get a cheaper more breathable canvas shoe that’ll last exactly as long?)
It is somewhat possible, “sandpaper” alternatives like rubber griptape works and renders the shoe into ridiculously durable. Researching could figure something out for the shoe or the griptape but there is the funding problem he mentioned.
The Etnies Marana etc have the Michelin sole which is mean to be highly durable, and other shoes like DC have super suede uppers which are coated with PU. These models generally cost the same as average skate shoes and are sometimes on sale. I think they could make them more durable but they have to balance comfort and boardfeel as well.
Okay crazy idea to solve the economy of unbreakable shoes: what if we just make them accesorizable (like crocs do for example). That way they don't have to focus on repeat shoe sales, they can just sell expensive branded accessories. Skate brands could probably come up with some cool looking stuff that people will pay to slap on their shoes. Maybe they could even make attachable performance mods like extra grip tape, or firework holders. It'll make millions
leather/suede makes the best skate shoes. it seems wasteful to not make things out of animal products, whether or not you choose to eat them. veganism seems more ideological than ethical to me. as a rural person, the ideas that you can love/respect animals and kill/eat them aren't mutually exclusive
this is literally the dumbest statement i have ever read. basically sayin “ i love you but i will still kill and eat you “my friend”” sorry man, don’t like lashing out on people but hating on vegans just cause you don’t get it isn’t it… “ Don’t Eat My Friends”
It’s doesn’t make sense to eat something you claim to love. There are more than enough resources/alternatives to support not exploiting animals. You are sadly mistaken if you think veganism isn’t ethical, its very definition is based on ethics lol. Having said all that, companies like ES have been making really solid synthetic leather shoes.
My questions never make it into your segment. And I am a real skate nerd. I am disappointed and I don’t know what’s wrong with my questions. As a 10 year subscriber I would think that I might get a question picked every once in awhile but it just never happens. It’s still fun to watch, but it would also be great to have my questions answered. 😢
