Can Screen Texture Improve Digital Art Skills? | Bellemond Kent Paper

In the past, the iPad screen protectors I used were just that - screen protectors. But, the Bellemond Kent Paper Screen Protector is a thin, toothed-surface that makes creating digital art with an Apple Pencil a completely enhanced experience for both professional and casual digital artists.
I am not sponsored by Bellemond and did not receive this product to endorse. This was an item purchased, out-of-pocket, to use with real-world illustration applications. The intent is to share my experience, positive or negative, in an honest review. I hope it may be helpful for you.

For all those worried about trapped air bubbles, fear not. They disappear on their own after about a week. When I installed mine, I had like 12 bubbles. Small and big. I decided to just leave it. Then as the days went by, the bubbles disappeared one by one. Now there's no air bubbles after a week. I'm so happy. So the main thing u should worry about is lining up the paper correctly along the edge of the ipad. Having previously used a genuine Paperlike protector, this Kent paper is so much better.

That is so neat! Thanks for the video and review. I've had a tablet, that I rarely use for drawing because I don't like the feeling of it. This could actually help to get more use out of it. :) Your drawing of course sells it for sure :D Great to see you make videos again. Have a great day!

I bought an inexpensive magnetic “paper” screen for my iPad when I draw. I only use my iPad occasionally for drawing in Procreate so that was a great solution for me. I can remove it when I am not using it to draw 😊 I completely agree about drawing on a glass surface, it felt like being on ice skates for the very first time! Thanks for sharing this great solution. Love watching your videos!

Thank you so much for chiming in, Kim! I'm grateful that you enjoy these videos. This Bellemond is considered a "magnetic" style, but it is very secured on the glass, so it's doubtful I'll remove it until it gets damaged or worn out. On a different note, I hope you consider making videos of your incredible work at some point. There's a lot of folks out there who would benefit greatly from your expertise and skills. Plus, you could post your recipe for chocolate silk pie. That would be awesome! lol!! Hoping you are doing spectacular! ~ m

I have Paperlike and enjoy it for the same reasons you enjoy Bellemond. Paperlike does come with tape and instructs the user to do what you did with the blue tape, but on the long side like a book. I also took everything to a lbrary study room to install it. Cat hair, even with one cat gets underneath so I needed a “cat free” environment. I drew a lot on the glass but wouldn’t go back to that now. I have a 2018 11 inch iPad Pro.

Just bought one. I agree with Mark, this is a must have item if you are used to drawing on paper and dislike the “skating on ice” feel of drawing on a nekkid iPad. Unfortunately, I found this video after I had installed it. Mark’s tape idea would have saved me some heartache 😂

Honestly I absolutely HATE how the screen looks with the screen protector on. The screen on the ipad is so nice, especially on the ipad pros. It feels like a waste of money with the screen protector on. If you decide to go without the screen protector, you will eventually get used to drawing on glass, and it likely wont make a difference after a certain point. Pen tips might be a good alternative if its the grippyness youre looking for and not necessarily the texture. Maybe if you use the screen protector you will get used to how it looks, too. But personally I think it looks horrible especially if youre on any websites with white backgrounds. The sound is also a problem, the apple pencil makes a sort of screeching and scratching sound, it doesnt sound like using a pencil on paper at all. Edit: I changed my mind. The image quality isnt bad, it sounds and feels just like drawing with pencil on paper. Mechanical pencil on paper has always been my go to for sketching, and then editing that on the ipad. Honestly now I just do it all on the paper. Maybe the first screen protector I used was faulty, because the pencil made a loud screeching sound on that one. On the one im using at the moment, it doesnt make that sound. Gradually ive gotten used to the texture on the screen and thought it was wearing away, but I think ive just gotten used to the texture. I spend a lot more time on procreate now since I enjoy it a lot more. The added resistance means the quality of line work is improved by quite a bit. I tried drawing on the glass screen of my iphone, and noticed how slippery it was. Ill try it out for a bit longer and if i end out changing my mind somehow ill edit my comment, but honestly I think the texture really wont make a big difference if you get used to drawing on glass. You might even eventually prefer the smoothness that comes with it. Maybe its better to buy a drawing tablet seperate from your iPad instead, or just do sketches on paper and then do the rest on your ipad.

I am really grateful for your feedback and point of view. Thank you for taking time to share your voice on this. For me, it's been a huge game changer regarding the work I do. I agree, the original out of the box screen is gorgeous; however, I was never a fan of the tapping and the sliding of the Pencil on the glass. This protector definitely mattes-out the beautiful glass, but that doesn't bother me at all. I still write emails, surf the web, shop, watch movies, and draw the same way I used to before the protector. It all still looks great to me. The biggest advantage though, again for me, is that there is now tooth - that dragging feeling of the Pencil tip - on the surface which feels so incredible when I'm working. Granted, most of the work I do on my iPad is sketch work and studies, but this has been a huge change for me in the way I work. I don't waste sketchbook paper any more, because I don't need it. Of course, i still use my sketchbooks, but only when the need calls for it. But, we both know it all comes down to personal preference. You might like cooked carrots while I prefer raw; either way, we're still eating carrots. Again, thank you for the conversation and I'm genuinely thrilled for your time. Cheers! ~ Mark

I have to disagree. If your primary use for the iPad is artwork, that glass screen sucks completely imo. Yes the picture is slightly nicer, but drawing on glass will never be anything but awful for me. I’ve been drawing on glass for years with different tips and it never gets better, I also have screen tablets and graphics tablets that have matte finishes and are so much nicer to draw with. I bought one screen protector for my ipad which was awful because it was like drawing on sandpaper and it made a real mess of screen quality. Apparently some companies take the term ‘tooth’ a bit too literally. I really like the screen protector on my Huion Kamvas 13 and I’m still on the hunt for an iPad one like that. My Huion pen also uses felt drawing tips which are really nice. That’s why I’m here, trying for find something closer to what I like, I hope the Bellemond will be it.

@@GazzaBoo thanks for your thoughts on this. I typically do a traditional paper sketch then take a photo of it which I ink in Procreate using the Apple Pencil. But, last night, I didn't have my sketchbook with me and decided to do the sketching right in Procreate, something I rarely do - and something I haven't done since installing the screen protector. It was such a joy working with the Pencil on the screen protector, as it truly was a tactile experience and not just the clackety-clack slide n' glide I always had before the protector. Just enough "tooth" but not like sandpaper. I hope for some folks, they find this to be a benefit of having the screen protector and enjoy it as much as I do. I should also note that doing regular work (using Google Sheets, email, and even watching movies has not been impaired whatsoever). Cheers and thanks again! ~ Mark

I did get used to my wacom cintiq pretty quickly, but my other, on the go, tablet has a pure plastic surface and the pen scratches. This is extremely distracting and if these screens dont block the pens and can stand the abuse, they are a great way to transition from paper to digital.
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell Год назад
Yes! The Cintiq was one of my favorites! I had an old Wacom tablet for my laptop in the early 2000's and using it with Photoshop was the peak of technology, at the time. I thought using the modern iPads with the Apple Pencil was going to have the same feel as my prior experiences, but the glass surface is so unnatural that it was difficult to get truly used to - unlike the Cintiq, which was comfortable from the start. This Bellemond protector is already becoming a favorite and is changing how I draw with my iPad. Thank you for watching, UnkreativHock2, and for commenting! ~ Mark

Honestly, Organize Create Decorate, the more I've been using it the more I can't believe I waited so long to get it. The are other brands out there, but this was the one that I landed on after researching for a week. I'm very happy, though I wish I didn't have those two tiny air bubbles! lol! Still, I can live with them! Cheers! ~ Mark
