Scotty issued a challenge. It's Minimum Battles, or cry trying....
For purposes of this challenge, a battle is when I gain EXP (same as my normal ruleset). Minimum Battles means only gaining experience against required trainers. Sketch a move + run away/blackout is NOT a battle, according to my rules. This is my rule, but if you want to count blackouts or Sketch + run away, then add 3 to the battles counter, and I'd still argue it's the fewest battles needed to make this one possible within reason.

-Solo Challenge: No other Pokemon in battle, no items in battle
-No Vitamins
-Max DVs/Max IVs (Set by Scotty's overlay)
-Timer STARTS when I select New Game, and ENDS when the Champion is defeated.
-Required Battles are the 65 battles that cannot be avoided without glitches (See Jrose11's original Minimum Battles video.
-Pokedoll Glitch is a glitch and therefore banned.
-Brock Through Walls is banned.
-Badge Boost Glitch is allowed without restrictions.

Update, the premiere has been pushed back a couple hours . Scott told us in Discord that his render will take a bit longer and I don't want to schedule on top of his, so it is now 7am JST. This is hopefully the last video with a lot of keyboard clicks in the background. I took Scott's advice to swap out to a controller, which has helped A TON in newer content. Also, I may be a little late if I don't spring out of bed 😂

Wouldn't a minimum battles run consist of skipping Rocket Hideout via Pokedoll glitch? Considering you're using a glitch to learn Night Shade, this should also be in line with the run and would be a true minimum battles/exp run.

I plan to mess with things like this In the future, but for now I don't pokedoll glitch to maintain consistency with my other runs. But fair point, Scott specifically allowed Pokedoll glitch in this one

Intrigued to see how this goes for you. Meme runs are the most intriguing, and lead to some fun moments. I did a “Thrash Before Brock” run as my submission & it didn’t go as well as I had hoped given that I didn’t know where a lot of hidden items were located alongside poor routing & planning.

Ah, the first backport runs in your minimum battle series... you may be using one of the three gimmicky Gen 2 Pokemon, (other three being Shuckle and Wobuffet. The latter might be least likely due to how Counter works in Gen 1 and Mirror Coat not existing unless you replace it with Bide or something) but you are using this pokemon on Pokemon Yellow, so you're still technically RBY (Red/Blue/Yellow) Pokemon Challenges. XD

Personally I don't think Delibird is exactly on the same level as the others but on the other hand yeah, it technically is a gimmick pokemon due to it's starting move... present. Not to mention it's always been infamous pretty bad like gimmick pokemon tend to be.

This minimum battles run with Smeargle was epic!😊 I was super excited to see your submitted run , because I knew that it require some outside of the box thinking 😮. That trainer fly glitch was really surprising,and it was fitting with the spirit of the challenge. I know that whenever you'd break a challenge run of race I'm sure it would be fun.😆 I was really liking the heavy lifting that fissure was doing in this run alongside broken sleep mechanics. That was the best hour and (almost) half of my day. Thanks for the treat.🫡

I was very surprised you didn't try to sketch ice beam or blizzard to go along with growth. you could have 1-hit everything after lorelei with that. the fissure strats weren't that good for you

Actually I thought Smeargle was a bad pokemon but he earned place in my heart when I attemp Wish Cave on Rescue Team DX with Charizard Heracross and Smeargle. And I beat that impossible dungeon with Smeargle. That's why I now think that Smeargle is good pokemon.

Really good one! I was surprised how good it is, especially based on the Scott comment. I never used Smeargle before in my life, but it's a solid A-tier without optimizations, and in case it wasn't clear, I had too much fun playing with it.

Clearly you've never played vgc lol. The power of the dark void was a pathway to many possibilities some might call unnatural. Aside from that it also had every other support move available. Follow me so xerneas can geomancy up, tailwind for speed control, ally switch, wide guard, etc. Even post dark void world it still has spore.

The biggest asterisk on this is that you used a major glitch to get an early nightshade. Since that moment this doesn't really carry the "minimum battles" legitimacy. Maybe there's a way to get the low kick sketched from a mankey in the Nido garden. As long as one can outspeed the smeargle

I get what you're saying, but Mankey doesn't learn low kick until Level 9, so that strat isn't possible the strategy shown is the only way to get a move that is actually reasonable against Brock in that section

I learned from Scott’s video that a competitor remembered there’s a Lass with 2 level 30 Paras & a Parasect near the cave where Mewtwo lives and you can obtain Spore in replace of Sleep Powder. Oh right! You would have to obtain it from the first Paras then lose to it as well. 😅

Yeah, I know that trainer, but I opted for Sleep Powder because it's easier to obtain. Spore would require a Gen 1 miss or to use accuracy strats to get it to miss and then copy spore, but that takes another Sketch for Sand Attack to pull off

Didn't go Spore because I would need it to miss to Sketch it and I would need an accuracy move or wait for a Gen 1 miss to get it. This route was more efficient given that I didn't have an accuracy move.

Yeah, I think there was that factor, and it severely limits available moves in the pre-Brock section, since only Diglett, Pidgeotto and I think maybe Rival 1a's Spearow can outspeed

No, I knew about the Spore trainer, but decided for Sleep Powder because I didn't want to waste a sketch on Sand Attack. Otherwise accessing Spore would require a 1/256 glitch, whcih sould have just been way to tedious to reset for when Sleep Powwder has a 25% chance to miss and still is fairly reliable.

Even with crappy HP, ATK, DEF, SPC, and only so-so SPD but such a broad movepool it's a real surprising Pokemon for those willing to invest in its utility options.

@@RoninCatholic Yeah, stats don't really matter when you've got such an expansive movepool (though it's probably easy to softlock the run if your strategy is wrong which is unusual for these type of runs). Though I thought brock would be much harder and at first I saw night shade in the intro and was a bit confused thinking he cheated it in to beat the early game or something, then he got to viridian forest using struggle and my thought became "hold on... what pokemon can you get in viridian forest with the mew glitch?" and realized that's probably where the nightshade was from =p at this point I had zero doubt it could be done somewhat easily

@@Laezar1 With sufficient speed + movepool you can overcome any other weaknesses. It's always better to have a good attacking stat than not, but a good attacking stat won't help you any unless you have either the Speed to attack first _or_ the defensive bulk to take at least a hit before attacking. Of these, higher speed is better. Speed also hits diminishing returns quicker than the other stats. All that matters is having one more point than your opponent, not how many points you outspeed them by. Whereas with Attack and Special, the more points by which you outlevel their respective defense, the better it is for you and for your defensive stats, the higher they are the better they work for you.

@@RoninCatholic Actually speed is less all or nothing in gen 1 since it also governs critrate (based on base speed but since EV's aren't a thing yet that make sense since a maxxed out pokemon is always the same assuming same DV's). But yeah otherwise you're right. But even without looking into very complicated strats, having access to an accurate strong coverage move is going to do a lot to salvage any statline. There are limits of course but if you're thunderbolting a gyarados you're alway going to do a substantial amount of damage even with the shittiest stat around (this is even more true in runs where you can acquire good amount of stat exp cause stat exp gives a basline amount of stat that is basically sufficient to beat the game by itself regardless of base stats assuming good enough coverage, though banning vitamins does mean that's not a big factor here, I'd argue being allowed to use vitamins found on the ground specifically would be fair and comparable to pp ups but oh well =p).

I certainly can understand folks who argue for using vitamins from the ground, because naturally who doesn't take a pill they found lying in a cave somewhere lol. But jokes aside, I can try that for sure, since they are naturally placed throughout the game and just ban buying vitamins. May do a multi-run comparison of that. I chose to bypass offensive stats as much as possible here, though the argument could be clearly made for a coverage set. Chose against it because 1) that was likely what everyone else in Scott's race would do, and 2) the coverage isn't necessary at the end of the day. really, the main point was just testing how to beat Brock, which I did pre-game, but everything after that was a first attempt and just figuring things out as I went. I discussed a lot of move options in the unedited live commentary and explained why I chose to go the way I did.

Commented on this in the description, but basically whether you want to define by my rules, or by Jrose rules, this is certainly the fewest battles that you could beat the game with with this Pokemon. And as stated, I consider no exp to not be a battle, but even counting them (as my guy Jrose counted catching Pidgeotto in his Yellow Minimum Battles run), you still wouldn't be able to get a shorter route.

Having seen Smeargle runs by multiple content makers with a varity of rules sets ranging from Hardcore Nuzlocke to solo challenge to clearing the game with only Smeargle*s* in combat, I feel like Scott was warning you out of concern and that you should probably seek professional help for the levels of self hate this challenge suggests you have. On a happier note, I predict by the end you will nab Growth for your boosting move, Confusion for your main attack (maybe upgrade to Psychic if you can survive the hit), Recover and Blizzard for your final move set.

Smeargle is definitely a tough one in the beginning, but with the right strategy and a bit of shenanigans, it is possible. Terrible, but possible. Also, final moveset, you were 1/4, but I like your logic.

I'm just imagining doing this in Red and Blue and using the escape rope glitch to face a level 1 gyarydos and sketch its hyper beam, honestly, it would be fun to do this run using only moves from glitch Pokemon. Early Night Shade, early Body Slam, early Hyper Beam, etc. You could get some great stuff this way and probably kill it in minimum battle while speedrunning

If I blackout, the overlay will count a battle, so I will go back and double check, but there's a decent chance I blacked out on a trainer's first Pokemon and it set then. But if you want to check, that's why there's always a live commentary of the run.

I mean, minimum battles can be defined a couple ways. As I mention jn the video, i really mean minimum experience I my runs, whereas if you go th JRose approach, he counted the encounter to catch Pidgeotto as part of his minimum battles I don't think there's any argument that we could have reduced the number of battles to beat the game anyhow, do technically it is minimum battles by any definition.

ai could have fought them, the issue is that I would need a miss from Spore. Either I would have to use an accuracy strat or pray for a Gen 1 miss. otherwise Spore always hits.

So I've discussed this a lot in my minimum battles series. Rival 1 is a required battle, so win or lose it's still minimum battles.

@@RBYPokemonChallenges I totally agree with that premise in non-smeargle runs. I honestly don't even mind the trainer fly, as it's a great interpretation of the rules you set up and allows you to get almost any move in the game. It's just that the logic justification for getting night shade and fissure by claiming that a battle where you don't earn XP doesn't count directly interferes with the Rival 1 fight. Since you don't earn XP from losing to Rival 1, it shouldn't count as a battle. If it does count as a battle, then similar battles (gengar, Brock trainer, Fissure youngster) where you don't immediately run away should also count. Tackle and struggle each do 1 damage to Brock's pokemon, you have 35 tackle PP and 25 struggle health at level 6/7 to deal with brock's 32 hp Onix and 29 health geodude. Thankfully, that is 1 damage short at level 6/7, so you do require to either be level 7/8 by defeating rival 1 or sketch a different move.

I mean, we could have done it at level 6 with a bit more luck on Geodude, needing one more miss and on Onix needing one more Screech, miss or a longer Bide. So fair enough. Well do it that way one of these days, perhaps as a stream. As for the Tackle/Struggle analysis, you can never count on the full HP Tackle/Struggle though - nothing available to copy tackle from other than Geodude, you could grab Scratch from Diglett of Gust from Pidgeotto, but both require an extra encounter, and because the RNG is not truly random but rather psuedo random, the possibility of getting all of the misses from Tackle that you would need to KO both Pokemon at level 8 doesn't exist outside of save states or some sort of deliberate manipulation of the RNG. So I still stand by the premise that the route shown was the fewest battles that are actually possible within any sort of reason, level 6 Brock is possible but far less reasonable with Night Shade, but feel free to post a route that proves me wrong.

@@RBYPokemonChallenges Oh that's true. in the 3 viable battles, Smeargle is faster in all 3, so it's impossible to sketch tackle without items or an extra "battle". I was still going off of the pure math (whether or not it was actually TAS possible), which probably would have made you cry if you had to do it without the blackout rule. As you showed though, I think that after brock the game is completely doable, maybe just a bit more difficult without early access to night shade

Money is technically unlimited, so we could always max out vitamins as soon as we reach Celadon and get a massive power spike, and they essentially replace battles by giving Stat EXP. Rare Candies and PP Ups, on the other hand are limited in a playthrough and can only be obtained after beating certain key opponents. You can only get 5 PP Ups in a single playthrough (4 on Minimum Battles) and12 Rare Candies (11 on Minimum Battles). That's my logic, anyhow.

You can always reset to get "super lucky mode" (actual name for it btw) and get infinite casino coins in the game corner, the buy TMs and sell them. Now you have infinite money to buy all the vitamins. But even without it, there's more than enough money and random items on the ground in a minimum battles run to max out the Vitamin stat exp jn any run.

That is correct. Problem is Spore is 100% accurate and we need it to miss to copy it with Sketch. So we either need an accuracy move like Sand Attack, which forces us to waste a move slot, or we have to reset for a 1/256 glitch. That's why Sleep Powder is the play, still 75% accuracy and easier to obtain.

It is the infamous badge boost glitch. Whenever stats are changed in battle, the game recalculates the 12.5% boosts that we get to our stats from some of the badges onto our stats. Which stats are affected depends on which badges you currently have, but by the end of the game, we have badge boosts in every stat except HP, so Growth increases Speed, Defense and Attack as well as boosting Special as it's supposed to.

I hate this little French dog lol his gimmick caused my favorite legendary to get nerfed so hard he’s all but pointless now lol RIP Darkrai lol Dark Void now has less accuracy than Hypnosis. Since so many battles are singles, Hypnosis is now better than his signature move 🤦🏻‍♂️ all because this evil dog can Sketch his insane OP signature move. Darkrai is now a dark type Gengar without an ability (his ability only works on sleeping targets) 😂 I have never caught another Smeargle since I learned about the nerf out of pure spite 😂

You redefined this challenge as "minimum EXP", but it seems inappropriate since you used Rare candies. "Minimum KOs", however, fits what you actually did: you KOed the minimum number of opponents.

The Gengar encounter isn’t really not a battle considering you didn’t run away immediately. You did not gain experience but without engaging in a battle, he wouldn’t have attacked and you wouldn’t have night shade.

Also, while your example is true, it is likely not actually possible because of pseudo random RNG without save states or TAS - Smogon: "Each time a game boots up, or is soft reset, a number known as a 'seed' is plugged in. The seed gets its name because all of the other pseudo-random numbers 'grow' out from this seed. Since true random numbers cannot be generated, any given seed will always output the same numbers in the same order."

Yeah, it also factors in NPC movement, party composition, etc. But once you're in battle, it is basically just repeating values, from my understanding, at a fixed rate. It might be possible to make a frame perfect RNG timing TAS, but a human could never hope to get the luck for all those misses
