Yup. This right here. This exercise on your older "FAI" video is probably the number one thing that got my glutes activating correctly and helped fix a deep, debilitating pain in my inner hip joint that had me thinking it was some kind of labral tear. Thanks again for the videos.

Healthy MBS hey there, can you give an update on your hips 😁
@kevinpierce4061

@@cosmoCobra any update? I suspect you weren't engaging your glute med which led to overcompensation via your tfl and your core on your opposite site. Then your core on the side of the weak glute feels loose relative to your tense core on the other side. This is what happened to me. Did you resolve this?

Great vid! My question is does this activate the TFL? I have TFL dominance where my glute med turns off. I want to avoid the TFL as much as possible. Thanks!

Is there a way to completely isolate only one leg because I want to give the other leg (on the floor) a clean chance since I feel it pushing while I do the one in the air. Get it?

Great video guys! I'm curious what the difference is in having patients in 90 degrees of hip flexion like you show here vs having them in a more extended side-lying position?
@michaelkessler9467
@michaelkessler9467 8 лет назад
I think hairy Pixels might be right. However making sure the foot does not medially rotate while dorsiflexing will stop the TFL activating.
@Uprighthealth

Alex, a video is in queue on this topic. Stay tuned.
@michaelkessler9467
@michaelkessler9467 8 лет назад
Exactly what will be the topic? Will you explaining why you've chosen have the patient in 90° hip flexion instead of straight leg. Surely by having the hip flexed you''re unnecessarily bringing into play the TFL and the Rec Fem?

I can barely do any type of leg lift. My sciatic burns and I feel pain and twisting from hip up into my back. Do squats help build up to leg lifts? What other excercise can I do to strength these muscles?

My quads/hamstrings start cramping when I do it.. I can never feel my glute medius.. If I do it with straight body (no angle at the hip) I feel it at the back side of my but (piriformis I suppose). What am I doing wrong?

Also the piriformis (or whatever) activates when I do those straight standing wall exercises that Athlean-X did a video on

When I try this exercise, why is it that my hip already aches when I only lifted my leg about a few degrees (less than 10°)? Is it a bad sign of deep inflammation of my hips in general? I'm only 28yo by the way.
@potrelviewer9536
@potrelviewer9536 2 года назад
I can still walk (thank God), but any move that implies moving to the side is a chore in itself; I can only compensate by either pivoting slightly to the targeted side, or not do the move at all.

How to activate gulteus medius without involving gluteus maximus and piriformis? Is there a specific angle in clamshell for this?
@HairyPixels
@HairyPixels 8 лет назад
Why are you doing this in hip flexion? I've never once seen this suggested and a simple test suggests this a good way to make the TFL overactive and totally screw up the purpose of the exercise.
@Uprighthealth
@Uprighthealth 8 лет назад
If your TFL gets overactive from this, your form is either off or you have coordination issues that need to be addressed with other exercises to prep you before doing this. A video is already in queue to explain why hip flexion is important. Anyone who has struggled with the conventional leg lift with the hip in extension (with its common overuse of the Q.L. and lateral quads) will usually feel the difference in effectiveness quite quickly by adding hip flexion (assuming they've learned not to use the TFL).
@HairyPixels

Upright Health Thanks. Looking forward to the video.

How do you learn not to use the TFL and how do you tell if your using it more than you should? Also, just with the standard side lying leg lifts, my upper hamstring (lateral side) seems to take over some of the work of the glutes, it doesn't feel right as I don't get that sensation with the other leg. Any suggestions as to what this is and how I should solve this?
@leonardomelia92
@leonardomelia92 5 лет назад
@@Uprighthealth same issue, i've seen other saying that in hip flection you get the TFL overeactive where instead you don't want to use it (expecially someone like me that had got IT BAND syndrome and want to relax the TFL and strenghten the glutes)
