This looks like it was filmed at the Soul to Soul concert in Ghana, also called the "African Woodstock". In 1971 the government of Ghana invited several black American acts to perform in celebration of the nation's fourteenth year of independence. It's some of the most electrifying concert footage you'll ever see.

The "Na Na Na Na" verse or chorus of the song was not in the original song by Chris Kenner in 1962, but was added in 1966 by the East Los Angeles group Cannibal and the Headhunters because the lead singer forgot the lyrics during recording so he ad-libbed, it sounded so good that they kept it in the recording. the rest is music history. The Beatles asked the band to open for them in their 1966 tour.

MUSCLE SHOALS MUSIC! Woohoo! The studio version was recorded right down the street at FAME Recording Studios! And it is fire! But in my opinion, it’s nothing compared to Wilson’s cover of the Beatles’ Hey Jude!! Duane Allman talked him into recording it while Rick Hall & his musicians (The Swampers, as in Sweet Home Alabama) were gone to lunch! It’s unbelievable! SOOOO much better than the Beatles’ version. If y’all haven’t seen “Muscle Shoals,” you should check it out. It’s a documentary about Rick Hall & The Swampers & the Muscle Shoals Sound. You’d love it! Tom Jones recorded in Muscle Shoals, & that’s the Wilson Pickett connection. It would blow your mind to know who all recorded here! Aretha Franklin, Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, Bobbie Gentry, The Osmonds, Paul Simon, Bob Seger, Etta James, Candi Staton, Alabama, Clarence Carter, Arthur Alexander, Julian Lennon….

My son first heard Wilson Pickett at the age of 9....he's now 25. He's still a HUGE fan!! I'm so excited to pass on the music that I loved when I was younger!

More soul please! Otis Redding is one of my favourites: "I Can't Stop Loving You", "Try a Little Tenderness" are great songs to start with. And as many have commented below, "Mustang Sally" is probably the most iconic Wilson Pickett song of all. So many more artists that this leads into and that you would love; Jackie Wilson, Sam and Dave and the list goes on and on. As you are realizing, an amazing thing happened starting in the late 50's and continuing into the early 70's. It was an explosion of incredible music and artists like we've never seen before or after.

I've never heard a live performance of this before, but a studio performance by him was always a live show in the early days. And the story/sermon reminds me of a couple of things: Bobby Womack's intro to "The Preacher/More than I Can Stand"; and a story song I first heard back in the 8-track days called "Soul," by a _band_ called S.O.U.L. (it was *very* hard to find on RU-vid 😄). Um, he *stayed* fired up, which is all I'm gonna say about that.

Powerhouse voice... Wilson Pickett is a legend. For a real treat try Wilson Pickett singing The Beatles "Hey Jude" with legendary Duane Allman on guitar (from the Allman Brothers Band)

Great stuff! I see someone else just mentioned the movie The Great Outdoors. I actually just watched The Blues Brothers movie again with my sons. Lots of great Rhythm & Blues songs in that, along with the original artists.

Originally this was done in either 64 or 65 by a band called, Cannibal and the Headhunters! Then Wilson redid it just like Sugar, Sugar by the Archies.

My sister had this 45 and I loved it. She would always holler at me because I would take it and forget to put it back in her room. Showing my age here for sure but. HOOFA! Wilson Pickett is a true legend. This is real Rock and Roll In this great song he is singing all the dances that were big at the time. This could possibly be the start of a mosh pit. Only in a good way. On the 45 there are alot more na, na. na's

When I was Indiana University, which had and still has one of the best music schools in the nation, there was a band made of graduate student studying jazz, called: Jif and the Choosy Mothers Amber, you can only imagine the horn section. When they did this song, the keyboard player would hold up a sign that said “NA” so people could sing along

The drummer Willie Leacox from the band 'America' passed away this past week. He was the drummer for the band for 41 years. He did retire from the band in 2014. He had started with the band in 1974. The best song to hear him play his drums is a song called "Tin Man". "Tin Man" became the band's fourth top-ten hit in the US. The band has been around since 1970. America won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist and was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Group at the 15th Annual Grammy Awards in 1973. The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2006 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. They still tour to this day. February 24, 2022 the band America will be playing LIVE at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tulsa, OK.
