No, Jim Lee is NOT overcharging. People are just pissed because they can't afford it. They think he should be charging $500 or something. Yes, they have no idea the amount of work that goes into drawing the Galactus piece you showed us. Well worth 20k.
Years ago, a “fan” pestered Adam Hughes for a Wonder Woman sketch that he said was for his daughter. The guy got the commission from Hughes on the last day of the convention and put it on eBay that night. That’s why he stopped doing commissions at conventions.
@@amead78 how can he get mad when the guy may have been needing the money for his daughter. He got the sketch and he sold it and maybe that money was for his daughter. Even if it wasn’t and the guy was just on some con man stuff, who cares? It’s over and done with. If that pisses him off THAT much, he should be sketching the covers and putting them on eBay his damn self. There’s no law against that. Why hurt your bigger fan base at large AND cut money out of your pocket because you are mad about a single guy who had more hustle than you on a single occasion? That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard. That’s like saying I bought a shotgun for my neighbor and now he’s using it to hunt and he sells the meat from the game he catches. I’m moving and I’ll never touch a shotgun again! That makes ZERO sense. How about you just get out there and do the same thing? If you’re not doing in person commissions fine but you should control the narrative and do it yourself instead exclusively online.
Jim Lee can set his price, and so can any artist. If you don't like his art, don't buy it. He's pricing based on his self-worth and time, and that's his right. What Non-Artists Don’t Get Skill and Experience: Years of hard work and practice. Time and Effort: Hours put into creating each piece. Market Demand: How popular the artist is and who wants their work. Reputation and Branding: Building a name and a strong following. Recognizing His Worth Jim Lee’s pricing shows his skill, the value of his time, and his true worth as an artist. It's a fair reflection of the dedication and expertise he brings to his work.
Problem with Magneto is he's nailed down as being around in WWII. Spider-Man's origin isn't linked to any world event, so it can keep being moved forward.
Nick Fury, Reed Richards, Ben Grimm and the Sub-Mariner were all in WWII as well. Nobody gives them a hard time about it. Captain America too .... even if he was thawed from the ice in 1964, that was 60 years ago -- so he's at least 80 now.
If Jim Lee can get that much money for a commission, good on him! There's no reason he shouldn't get his money. If most people can't afford it, he has hundreds of comics you can buy and frame instead.
@@TimWright12 if you’re happy with him disrespecting you then fine, however this is a CONTINUATION of his behavior that shows he doesn’t have any respect for the people who put him where he is.
@@ludotoyhunter8492 I don't have any Jim Lee comics, but I think you should do some research into what commissioned artwork costs along with the time that goes into creating it.
Great program thank you - appreciate it. The Jim Lee issue is being overblown because of the market downturn for actual books and original art from such books. Thanks again.
Jim Lee artwork is very expensive but it is worth every penny. Just his signature alone on Batman 608 2nd print (cgc SS 9.8) elevates that book to $1,200. Where as a cgc 9.8 (no signature) will run you $400-$600. I am a big fan of his artwork. His work on Batman Hush was incredible.
I have my questions about cgc after seeing a amazing spider 3 9.0 man on crapbay for 2,295$ ! Or best offer. The book is clearly not a 9.0, maybe a 5.0 or stretching it, a 6.0. Way over priced. But the dealer clearly knows what they're doing by the $ on most of their other stuff. Outrageous!😂❤
I think That when we were a child we rooted for the hero. As we got older we understand more of the villains. Magneto is definitely more Anti Hero. Favorite villain of Marvel is a tough one. Seeing a good bunch on this list I got :) Batman 125 was a great read!
I can't get over the people whining about the prices Jim Lee is charging, it's reaching stupid proportions. Now I won't say it's affordable, it really never has been, but it is normal for the market. The 24x36 piece I commissioned from Art Adams was considerably more than anything on Lee's list, but he isn't even quoting prices for works of that size. If he did they would really have a meltdown.
@@Just_Pele bro you got a poster sized piece of artwork that probably had multiple characters and colors and ink on it. This prick is talking about a SKETCH COVER (which many artists did for free for a long time) for 2 grand. That’s asshole behavior. There’s comic pages and original works from Greg Capullo (who is a better artist) that don’t cost that much. He’s just trying to squeeze money (which he doesn’t need he just wants at this point in his career) out of his fan base which he continues to make obvious he’s got no respect for. He’s a greedy asshole and I hope not a single person buys that crap.
If people are paying, he isnt charging too much. A commissioned piece is a WANT, not a NEED. Haters are just upset they cant afford to keep up with the Jones'. No such thing as overpriced when people are buying WANTS.
The people that are bitching about the price of Jim Lee commissions are mad that they cannot get a commission and have a chance to flip them. This is why AH! Increased his prices. Totally reasonable.
do the mystery boxes get sent at the same day each month? I bought my first one and it hasn't shipped yet but i thought maybe there is a mail-date that is the same day/date each month
@@jokercomicsNc why are you constantly buying the same book? What’s the point of having 3 copies of the same book? You obviously aren’t selling them and you didn’t accidentally buy them so why are you buying the same thing over and over again?
@ludotoyhunter8492 I plan on selling comic books in the future. Like 10 years down the road. And since this book is a key book it will hols its value and maybe even go up.
I think Jim Lee's rates became too publicized and it rubbed people the wrong way. I think most artists would try and keep that information on the down-low, because they know it would garner that kind of reaction. But, Jim Lee doesn't think like that. Which isn't surprising.
Jim Lee is just an asshole. He’s always had this attitude towards us fans as if we were peons or something. The fact is WE were the ones buying the books that got him to where he is now and he acts like he’s done EVERYTHING on his own. He’s shitty as a person and he’s a prick for trying in this bad economy to bilk THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS from comic fans only for him to do some lame arrogant ass stuff like add a wine cellar to his house or something like that. To hell with him. If he wants money that bad he should take his ass back to work like every other creator and draw comics. Jim Lee can kiss both sides of my ass.
@@AddMiller221 how many charge car prices though? You don’t think that’s insulting at this point in time when everyone is struggling and striving to get ahead?
@@ludotoyhunter8492 Prices are all across the board. The bigger/more famous the artist, the more expensive. Original Art is a luxury item. If I really want a watch, I don't complain that I can't afford a brand new, high end Rolex. It's just a reality that I might only be able to afford a Timex.
@@AddMiller221 no but you do look around at the competition so you know what is comparable. Todd McFarlane (the better artist) ain’t charging that. Skottie Young (the more consistent artist) ain’t charging that. Greg Capullo (the better and more consistent artist) ain’t charging that nor is Alex Ross or James Jean whose work is ACTUALLY IN GALLERIES!! Why does he feel like he’s earned the right to charge car price for his art when better artists aren’t charging that? Some artists are just assholes. Babs Tarr, Eric Canete, Jim Lee, Jenny Frison….all assholes who believe that they have a right to charge EXORBITANT AMOUNTS for shit product. Babs charged 30 bucks for a 15 page art book meaning that she was charging 2 dollars a page, meanwhile Adam Kubert has a WHOLE BOOK that’s a hundred plus pages for 50 dollars and he is light years ahead of her in terms of talent! Eric Canete was charging 400 dollars per SKETCH for sketch covers with a full spread cover going for 1800 to 2000 dollars but Neal Adams had sketch covers with just the sketch for 60 dollars. Make it make sense. These people are just assholes. Entitled assholes. Jim Lee showed up a c2e2 for an hour after he was advertised to be there and people started complaining. To “make it up to us” he returned a couple years later but was CHARGING FOR MEET AND GREETS!! Not a product but a basic interaction with this prick! A damn hello was 150 bucks and that’s how he “made it up to us”. Fuck him and anyone who looks like him. Every single time he does something he is trying to bilk money out of people. The same people who put him in the position he’s in. I’m not buying a Jim Lee nothing anymore. Screw him.
I have that Deadpool 1 signed by Rob liefeld it’s a 7.5 grade I had that comic since I was a kid then I met Rob at my favorite comic store emerald city here in st Pete Florida I geeked out he was so nice
I thought the controversy over Jim Lee was that he’s charging all this money for commissions when he’s supposed to be running a company. Is he earning the salary he’s getting paid? DC isn’t exactly in great shape at the moment. Who’s at the wheel over there?
If that's the argument, then it's a dumb one. Tons of people have days jobs, but earn supplemental income outside of that. That doesn't make them worse at their job.
@@ascorvinus Jim Lee is just a prick who shows us that he cares nothing about comic books or comic book fans. He has a streak of doing bad things and this is just another log in the fire.
@@robertyager5446 they did the Trump arc in the DC Universe in the early 2000s. It’s called “President Lex Luthor” and it ran in the Superman comics of that time.
i own 2 ORIGINAL PICASSO pieces and my entire house is covered in art... $20k for any modern comic artist artwork is insane!!!! those $8k-$10k pieces are mostly from actual comic book pages...like the original art, not some BS he draws up in an afternoon. i can legit buy an original picasso piece of art work for $20k and yet Jim Lee thinks hes on the same level as Picasso??? GTFOH!!!
@@30.06onaGrassyKnoll thank you!!!!! The only person who has a clear idea of how this works! The market shows that what he’s asking for makes him an OUTLIER in terms of the price of his product versus that of his peers. James Jean has ACTUAL GALLERY PIECES hanging up in exhibits around the world and he isn’t even charging that much for his product. The fact that he LEGITIMATELY thinks that he can ask and command these exorbitant amounts is not only insane but it’s also highly disrespectful to most comic book fans. The same fans who put him in the exact position he currently sits in. What an asshole.
don't like it, don't buy it. who cares what an artist wants to charge for their work? for me, i like lee art much better than Picasso, but art is subjective
@@ludotoyhunter8492 did i? i ask again, whats wrong with lee charging that much for his original work? i certainly cant afford that, so i just wish him well & move along. but if i could i definitely would
