In this video Todd hooks up a loaded car hauler trailer to our Ford F350 with the 7.3L gas all while hauling our Northern Lite truck camper. Will the gas motor have enough power to get the job done with all that payload and trailer weight? Tune in to fine out!
As always, we hope you find the it useful and informative!
Thanks for watching!

►2020 Lance 1172 - We purchased from Southland RV in Atlanta, GA - August 2022 before our 3 week trip out west. Sold it in June 2023.
►2020 Bigfoot 10.4 Truck Camper - We got our 2020 Bigfoot 10.4 Truck Camper in October 2021. We were contacted by a couple of subscribers (now good friends) who had theirs up for sale in Upstate New York so we headed out on an adventure. We sold our 2014 Bigfoot 10.4 within one day of listing it online.
►2014 Bigfoot 10.4 Truck Camper - We got our 2014 Bigfoot 10.4 in August 2021 from RVOne near Charlotte, NC. Todd was headed to buy a brand new Bigfoot 10.4 just before we got the Lance 975 but when he got to Southland RV, it was sold. That's when we decided to go to the Lance 975. We knew at some point in the future we'd have a Bigfoot again and here it is.
►2021 Lance 975 - We got our new 2021 Lance 975 from Chattanooga Fish n Fun in Hixson, TN in August 2020. After looking at several models, we decided on the Lance 975 (Check out Brad's channel from Chattanooga Fish n Fun, he gives great, thorough overviews of some really nice boats and campers.) We sold the Lance 975 in August 2021.
►2019 Northern Lite 10-2 Truck Camper - Bought and delivered from Mountain Motors in Troy, MO on 12/2019 and sold it in 01/2020.
►2005 Northern Lite 10-2 Truck Camper - Picked up on 8/10/2019 we did major repairs, maintenance and renovations to this one and sold it in 12/2019.
2008 Bigfoot 21RB - Sold 12/2019, we went across country to purchase from a dealer in Pueblo Colorado.
►2006 Casita Spirit Deluxe - Sold 07/2018 when we bought our Bigfoot.
►2002 A-liner - Sold 05/2017 when bought our 2006 Casita Spirit Deluxe.

I have a 2021 F-350 SRW , SuperCab , FX4 , STX with the 7.3 V8 and 4.30 gears ! This truck exceeds my needs! No need to a costly diesel & DEF fluid for me ! I’m rated for 4300 Lbs payload, and 20K Lbs gooseneck. I’ll never even be close to those numbers!

I have a 1988 F250 4x4 with the 460 , I have towed a horse trailer with two horses 1500 gallons of water enough hay for two weeks and a bed full of hunting gear up the side of a mountain. I now own a 24 foot Grady White explorer, this truck tows extremely well , it passes every thing but a gas station. It has gone from Washington to Alaska 4 times it has gone from Washington to commyfornia several times. I am very happy with the performance of this truck. I have friends who arre chevy guys ,they keep telling me to buy a new chevy I just laugh at them!

Funny how it has almost half the hp of the new 7.3 (230hp compared to 430) and 95 torque less than the new motor. Crazy how much power was lost when they first started introducing emissions. Good to hear it’s still kicking!

Good review. So many are sceptical of the 7.3 but for truckcampers this is one of the best engine setups out their. Mine is a 2020 dually with e 4:30 gears replacing my 2017 SRW 6.7. The stability with my Northernlite 9.6 is hands down better with the dually and more than powerful enough for my needs.

I've owned 2 modern turbo diesel pickups over about a 15 year period (a 3/4 ton & a 1 ton). I've also owned 3 diesel cars. That said, I believe the gas engine option, such as the 7.3 is by far the smartest choice for the majority of folks when everything said is factored in (up front price, maintenance costs, out of warranty liability when stuff starts breaking etc). I currently have a motorhome with the Ford V10 in it & other than still trying to re-tune my head to be used to the revs, the thing has been absolutely bulletproof for +40,000 miles & that's with the majority of the 40k mi towing a car on a dolly behind us. Oil changes are 6 qts of oil....dirt cheap.

Why would you buy a gas motor home? Cheaper?
@loseerich493
@loseerich493 4 месяца назад
Cheaper to buy. Cheaper to register every year. Cheaper to insure. Cheaper to maintain (no fuel filters, a fraction of the oil needed when you do a change...etc). WAY cheaper to fix when something breaks.@@j_rainsgoat3929

Another great video, Todd. One suggestion I might make as I did this in my trailer to haul my CanAm Defender 4 door SxS. I ran e-track down the length (16 ft) of my trailer in the center of my tires. I then attached e-trailer wheel chalks on the front where I wanted my SxS to always sit. I then used the straps for the e-track up over the center of each tire and snugged it down. It is a very safe way to haul these things and it lets your suspension move freely over bumps etc. as you are going down the road. I would send pictures of what I did if I could.

Todd, Setup is looking really beautiful. Two interesting benchmarks that may be a benefit to know. First, hit the CAT Scales with that setup fully loaded for your next trip. The numbers might be quite interesting. Second, bring your infrared digital thermometer to keep tabs on the temperature of your brakes and calipers. Your stopping distance has definitely increased and the higher temps might surprise you. The F350 brakes are much smaller than the F550. Something to keep in mind. Safe Travels and Happy Trails to you both. Cheers.

You have a great setup. I don’t follow you so I don’t know why you didn’t keep the diesel, but I don’t blame you for having bought the gasser this time around. You are smart to have a dually and properly towing that Jeep on a flatbed. Enjoy your rig! I love people having a proper setup. I tow an Airstream with a dually Cummins. I always feel safe and have sufficient power to make it to my destination. Stability isn’t an issue and neither is slowing down. I could have a 45’ 5th wheel with a car in it or I could be towing the Airstream with a F150 but I’d be sitting on the edge of my seat everywhere I go. People have to think about overloading their trucks and being a danger on the road.

Great video. Big gassers have been getting it done for a long time. Between modern gassers being so good, diesels being so expensive, getting worse MPG than previous diesels, and with diesel being more expensive than gasoline in a lot of areas, diesel really is a tough sell for the occasional hauler.

Nice setup! Looking to upgrade my 6.4 hemi Ram 2500 to a dually for the extra payload to haul our truck camper with the boat or jeep in tow. Plus we'll probably want a bigger camper in a few years. I want to stick with gas for my next truck, but a gas dually is hard to find! Looking at used trucks, my first choice is the 7.3 Godzilla, but they aren't cheap. Will probably end up with a slightly older Ford with the 6.2 to stay within budget. Not quite as much power, but seems it should get the job done, plus we'll probably only tow with the camper a couple times a year. Would also consider a Chevy with the 6.6, but those are also hard to find within my budget. I'd love to have another ram, but my main problem with them is that the crew cab is just not as spacious for two kids and a medium-large dog in the back. The middle seat is not very comfortable either with the hump in the floor and shorter seat bottom.

I don't know why he really thought it would be a problem. I have a 1997 32' Class A which weighs around 16, 750. plus I tow a 4,100 lb jeep behind it. It has a 7.5 V-8 gas engine and only an E-4 OD (4 speed transmission). It was rated at only 245 HP. Even without the Banks exhaust on it, this old school at 10.5 tons does an adequate job. The new engine and multi speed transmission on his 7.3 should not be a problem.

Never had a problem pulling a loaded "car hauler" behind my 2000 F350 powerstroke 6sp manual with a fully loaded 13ft Lance camper over Colorado's 12000ft passes. 7.3 diesel was the best motor made, but didn't comply to the new environmental crazies 'tuned down' stuff today, and why I love it. Also have a V-10, 5.0 and 3.5 Echo boost my 'wife' drives, but for pulling I always revert back to the ole 7.3 diesel with upgraded Garret power master turbo and straight through exhaust. I'm sure some day I'll have no choice but look at the 7.3 gas.

I can't leave my valley without going over a 5k mountain pass, no matter what direction. For that reason I went with diesel. However, my camper is nowhere as big as yours. Although, I have seen diesel trucks with huge campers struggle up the passes around my area. Great video! Thanks for sharing! I'm looking to purchase a truck and truck camper setup in the near future. Why did you choose the 7.3 over the 6.7 for your new rig? Cheers! Sean 👍🏻🍻🇺🇸

Curious how close you are to max payload when you are fully loaded for a real trip?

Probably pretty close. I didn’t weigh my truck this time with the trailer but maybe next time I will. Thanks for watching!

Hi there!! Question?? Have you ever mesure the height of your f-350 loaded with your camper?? I have the same truck with a Lance 995 which is the same as your late 975 model. I’m building a carport and was wondering if 12' was high an-ought. Please reply. Thank you
@RunawayRoses
@RunawayRoses 8 месяцев назад
We have a garage height of 12’1” and that would leave us about 2 inches of clearance once we raise the camper high enough to get it off our F350. If you’re going to build a carport, I would highly recommend at least 13 to 14 foot tall ceiling. I wish ours was taller all the time. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Right lane on hills is for loaded and slow vehicles /
@RunawayRoses
@RunawayRoses 8 месяцев назад
It’s a short, incline hill, and the right lane merges into the left lane. So in order to be safe and not have to merge with the load I stayed in the left lane. Thanks for watching!

I have a 2015 ford f-350 can I put camper on it and tow a 26’ fishing boat too?
@RunawayRoses
@RunawayRoses 5 месяцев назад
Yes you could as long as you stay within your weight limits of the truck. So it would depend on the size and weight of the camper and boat. Thanks for watching!

Why do you like a gas engine over a diesel? The gas mileage has to suck?
@cowboykyle

Cheaper repairs. Less complexity. Less maintenance. Cheaper maintenance. Less operating costs.

Gas is the way to go. Diesel emissions systems are not fun. Yeah diesel has far more power but you pay through the nose for it.
@TACTICALNOMAD

Personally, I would not haul that type of load with anything less than an F-550, and definitely not unless it’s a diesel.

Id like to know more about your shop/garage... Id assuming the swing out doors were a fraction of the cost and more functional than a regular garage door? Great video BTW!
@RunawayRoses

There used to be a garage door on that side, but I had to raise the height of the garage door. So I had to build some barn doors to close it off. Thanks for watching!

What gear ratio would pick if you were buying again ?
@RunawayRoses
@RunawayRoses Месяц назад
My Ford F350 had the 3:73 gearing with the 10 speed transmission. It did really well, and I was happy with it. It did everything I needed it to. If I was to order a truck, I might go up to a 4:10 or so. If I was hauling and towing a full load a lot, I would go up in gearing but just hauling our truck camper alone the 3:73 did great. Thanks for watching!

The question is that with all that weight…. Are you legal or are you exceeding the manufacturer’s limit? The truck can pull it but in an emergency can you slam the brakes without something breaking and losing control?

Todd, you are still NOT at "actual travel weight" .... Carla, the dog, All the food, supplies, and additional gear, for a camping trip, (also Filling of fuel tank, propane, water, ..... ALL those add up to quite a bit addition weight ..... Just saying ... I do LIKE the new Ford 👌👍👍👍
