iFixit it is for me I bought a new iPad 2020 but using my sisters 2010 MacBook Pro for collage since it’s just solid and has a long life just needs battery repairs
I have a Mid 2012 Non Retina Unibody too. After upping the Ram to 16GB and installing a Samsung SSD, they really aren’t that bad to use, just not for transcoding video. It took mine like 45 minutes to covert a 15 minute 720p video and it sounded like the fan was about to fly away like a helicopter.
I've never thought about how much work goes into the iFixIt guides and website. I know these videos are basically just a side project for y'all but I would love to see this become a full fledged Tech Tube channel. You definitely have the talent on board.
When I repaired my controllers (with your kit which was awesome) I had to restart the switch because there was a little drift after connecting the controllers back up. But they work perfect and I am so happy with the results! Thanks a bunch! ❤️

Omg, I am so glad that you don’t say blow on the joystick, the reason why the issue coconuts is because there is wear on the pads inside the joystick mechanism and the pad senses a false actuation and so it does the stick drift. If you have this problem no amount of blowing is going to fix it. Just replace it. Kits are also on eBay for less than 10 dollars with all the hardware included
I've order a shell in AliExpress with the seller Mariam or something like that, and they send me a bunch of Philips screws that are much stronger than the originals. Maybe you can find some there

@@iFixitYourself joy-con drift on all 4 of my joy-cons, replacement shells on one pair of those and on another pair, slide retention piece replacement on two other joycons, mac mini SSD upgrade, PS4 HDD upgrade and a 27" iMac hinge repair and SSD upgrade. Phew, busy just thinking about it.
It's a very similar process. The main difference is the R button on the back has a much shorter ribbon cable so you need to be a bit more careful flipping over the mid frame. Done so many left and right joy cons I actually prefer the right! As a side note, the guide on their website is pretty good.
Are the joycon parts from ifixit the exact replacement? I have a special needs child and his joycon lasted 9 months and I'm hoping the replacement parts will last longer and not made the same way as the factory ones.
I just stripped a screw on an old flashlight and had to break open the back panel with a set of pliers to put batteries in. Not proud of that. I'm happy for the tip of using the biggest screws first. Definitely gonna do that from now on.
For a quick fix soak the joy-con analog stick in alcohol to make sure it gets inside of it (ONLY the analog stick not the whole joy-con itself) then move the analog stick around a bunch to allow it to rub the little pads inside the stick for a few minutes. Let it dry for about 20-30 minutes then reinstall it in to the joy-con. I did this with my joy-con and it still works after almost a month of use when it was showing serious signs of drift beforehand to the point it was nearly unusable.
My pro tip: when you finish the repair, recalibrate the joy sticks by going to system settings, scroll down to controllers and sensors, scroll down to calibrate control sticks, press the right or left joy stick, press X button, and recalibrate. Sometimes its best doing it this way.
It makes me frustrated that its been 3 years and Nintendo still hasn't fixed the joystick module on the manufacturing level so that this drifting issue becomes the exception, not an expectation.
What I notice is that the replaced joystick are the left ones. My daughter have the same problems. Is there a way Nintendo fix this out of warranty? If not I have no choice but do this by myself using ifixit.
After 3 years and thinking I was safe from this drifting issue. My left joy-con has now started drifting. Although fixing gadgets with tiny parts inside stresses me out, it seems worth trying since the price of a new joy-con is a bit much.
Its a shame that nintendo has not even tried to address this issue. Bought mine a month back and it has started drifting , its only because of zelda that I am not giving up on my switch.
I tried to fix my joy con, but it still continues to drift. I ended up changing to new controllers. To my surprise, it continues to drift!? I updated my software, I calibrated my controllers, I updated my controllers and no luck. Is it the console itself??
I had the same problem but sorted it out by spraying a tiny bit of wd40 spray with the straw attachment just under the movable cover under the left controller stick then cleaned it with a cotten bud. So far so good.
This is honestly not that hard. I've done this with all four of my joycons now and they all work perfectly. The hardest part is actually in putting the cables into the tiny tiny slots. With a good light and a magnifying glass, it should makes things easier.
Has there been such a thing made yet as a replacement thumb stick which uses a different mechanical configuration? I get that these are small devices which limits options, but both my PSP and PSVita have analogue thumb sticks that are significantly older and more used, yet work as new, while occupying a similar amount of space. Unfortunately the PSP/Vita sticks don't appear to be direct-swap capable (different mounting forms and I doubt the wires are the right size or order), but surely someone could adapt the sensor portion...
Awesome, thanks for sharing! Good format to explain how a fix goes too. Question though, does the fix last or is it one of those problems that innevitably comes back after a while because it's a design defect? My Switch has the problem, and it's fairly expensive for me to import parts for the fix (importation taxes plus currency exchange rates). I've been considering between fixing it, or just getting something else like Hori's Split Pad Pro if it's an issue that keeps coming back on Joycons. In fact, if it is a problem that doesn't have a permanent fix, I'll just keep living with it as I currently am and wait till the Switch gets permanently replaced by something else. :P Don't really care for having to pay for parts and keep fixing the damn thing from time to time falling into sunken cost fallacy... I'd rather just buy something else. Nintendo should take the blame on this, not consumers.
Not sure about iFix It's lit, but Ninendos warranty repairs are well reported to break again after some amount of time so if it's an OEM part, I expect it would be comparable to buying new JoyCons. 8bitdo would probably be the better choice if you don't mind the other trade-offs. I personally like the feeling of playing with disconnected JoyCons so I might try this instead of braving Ninendos repair wait.
@@emma70707 Yep, that's exactly my fear... xD I have a few 8bitdo gamepads, they are great, but need something to replace the joycons to game on the move. Guess I'll have to take a look if 3rd party joycons can develop the same problem... hopefully they used some other type of analog stick.

If you replace the old sticks with the same design ones, only new, how is that fixing anything? These things are flawed by design! You might have the exact same drifting mere days later.
Isopropyl alcohol. That simple. When my joy cons start experiencing drift, I pour some into the joy stick, rotate it around several times, let it dry, and boom. Problem solved.
The joycon repair isn't really complicated if you have some basic knowledge and have watched probably over a hundred jerry rig everything videos Like i repaired the joystick itself after i had a replacement if i messed it up and to my surprise it works perfectly now
I am really curious about what the actual defect rate is for the joycon drift issue. this video made it seem like it is super common but then used a sample size of 5 which is really not a great indicator. Since I know 5 people with switches that never had drift. So it goes from 80% defect rate to 40%. Like we need more numbers since almost every device has a defect rate. So is this a real problem or just part of that acceptable defect rate and we have a bunch of people blowing the thing out of proportion.
It certainly could, as analog sticks are moving parts, therefore they tends to trap dust and debris and drift again. The best tip is to always keep them controllers clean. It will wear out again, but it would take years this time.
