The idea makes sense. The way Meta is marketing it doesn't. The "metaverse" we are seeing right now is technically Horizon Worlds which is essentially just dumbed down VR Chat with less content. Altspace VR was the same but recently it was announced that the project was dead due to Microsoft layoffs. The whole idea of things like this is absolutely great and it definitely helped me significantly through the pandemic. I was using my VR as a way to hang out with all of my friends, go to events, play poker, watch movies etc... The potential is huge.

I remember when clips of the metaverse first came about, someone went to the soapstone and I thought it was so funny! Wild to see a whole Vice piece behind the story of it now. Wild, dystopian feel but I enjoyed this video! The view at 4:31 absolutely cracked me up!

I'm sure the large majority of people first experience comedy shows through television. Does experiencing a live show take away from the television experience? No. Experiencing them through VR is just another step toward that.

As the vail of Covid has lifted, it is true that many of us are able to get back to activities in the real world, but that is not true for many and they continue to suffer from isolation and loneliness. Social VR has significant positive social impact on people and it provides an opportunity to form real bonds with others. A comparison of is IRL vs VR better is not a valid question. For those not able to experience things IRL, VR is a valid alternative. Be careful of judging the experience from a completely non-disabled viewpoint. As one who works with older adults in the Metaverse, the opportunities that things like the Soapstone does returns life to real people. Thank you for sharing this story.

Wow... The last few videos I've watched have all been a living manifest of Black Mirror episodes I watched in high school and the start of college. Now I'm waiting for the video of a company putting GPT-4 into a Boston Dynamics robot. Who knows what dystopian horrors await us as technology becomes more prevalent and privacy becomes an ever-vanishing facet of the past.

That's not how large language models work lol. GPT4 essentially predicts and generates the next word in a sentence. It will never control a robot.

@@wujianhong Right, they can't make decisions themselves, they're just trained to answer questions as humanly as possible. Computerphile did a cover of the Google lamda model claimed to be sentient. What scares me is the jobs potentially lost by the use of GPT, although we're still safe because their accuracy is quite low. I guess that's one of the horrors that awaits us lol.

Gpt is a language model. Put it in a robot and the robot stops working. We haven't come close to creating real AI.

Only T.Barb gets it and spoke on it towards the end. Live comedy in VR is meant to augment the experience and make it accessible for not only those in remote locations like Aaron mentioned, but those with social anxiety who wouldn't consider going to a comedy club in the first place. Having comedians wear the headsets on stage in front of a live audience, without a screen behind them showing what's going on in the Metaverse simultaneously, is a miss and obviously awkward. It would be cool to introduce the concept to a live audience with a couple jokes playing off wearing the headsets, then sell headsets after the show if they're interested in joining the virtual community for future events or know someone that would be but struggles with social anxiety or other health issues/disabilities preventing them from joining in-person.

3:01 that’s basically a cop out. The meta verse is t for people who cannot get out. It’s for people to pretend they have a social life, as characters that do not represent who they are in real life, because they don’t like who they are in real life. That's how I'm trying to look at it. There are people there laughing and seeming to enjoy themselves. Why poop on that? Is it different? Yes. Is it the future? No. The distant future? Maybe... I believe it is not what they were promised when they first invested into the idea of the metaverse and the VR equipment. Like Musk promising full self-driving in Tesla's by 2021. Zuckerberg couldn't let him be the only one to fall completely short of the vision that they had for their company. Saying what investors wanted to hear so they would throw money at them and making the other board members incredibly rich.

This is an interesting concept. I can see this being cool bc unlike zoom or typical webcam layouts you can look around at the crowd and feed off the digital laughter. Lol.
