Somebody makes the desktop replacement argument every time a new Raspberry Pi is released. You can use it as a desktop replacement so long as your expectations are appropriate and you don't ask too much of the board.

I've used an 8GB Pi4 hooked up to my bedroom TV for over 2 years. It is fine for basic browsing and streaming movies. The faster USB storage will be welcome once I'm able to get a Pi5. Being able to swap out the Micro-SD card on the Pi4 to turn it into an instant retro gaming system is awesome, and I'll end up doing the same with the Pi5. Thanks for the video!

To be fair, if you want to have an efficient little desktop system within the same power envelope (~6 W) with lots of I/O options, you want to get something like an Intel N100-based MiniPC. That way you can run Linux, even Windows and you get all of the benefits of having a modern desktop system, including AV1 decoding and much more. Been using one of those systems for a month now after struggling with an RPi 4B before, and it's honestly been an amazing experience. Won't play the latest-and-greatest 3D titles, but just about anything else just works.

And a n100 actually uses around same amount of power as a pi5, while offering 50% more Single thread and 110% more multi thread performance. 6W, ... you can get them down to 3W idle, with 14W 100% CPU load. Where as a pi5 is 2.5W to 12W 100% CPU load. And its basic X86, so install whatever your favorite OS is. A n100 easily does 7+ 1080p screams or 3+ 4K screams with HW decoding thanks to Intels great media engine. O, and most mini-pcs with n100 have m.2 slots, so just plug in whatever 1~4TB nvme and bingo... And the price is actually cheaper, as a Pi5 8GB is around 100 Euro, without case, power supply, m.2 slot, storage, ... o and no active fan! But you can find n100s like Chuwii larkbox X n100 for 160 euro, that includes case, 12GB, 38W power supply, 512GB SSD (and that m.2 slot), Intel 101 Wifi replaceable card, Windows 11... Runs 7W with Wifi under Windows 11. Incredible little machines. The Pi5 is just too expensive these days if you start adding up all the extra's and has frankly lost that power benefit compared to a Intel n100. What a strange time we live in.... Love my n100 for what it offers. Great little mini server and not even a bad desktop experience (for basic office pc / browser / youtube machine).

I mean, new Intel N100 chipsets are just rebranded celerons. These CPUs use a mix of new stuff (like AV1 decoding) with old manufacturing process, so Intel can recycle and sell this crap to emerging countries (aka. sell overpriced e-waste). So that is why we still have an intel HD integrated graphics of 2011 with a different name on those chips, while we could have Iris graphics way long ago. These CPUs also suffer from major throttling. Going down to 0.90ghz when the temperature starts being an issue (an issue for Intel apparently is just 75ºC in a ridiculous 10W CPU consumption) and the experience turns quickly into a miserable one. I had one of these machines (from one old older, a N4500) to mess with and it is horrible. Can't believe this chipset is officially supported by Windows 11. I had to use third party stuff such as ThrottleStop to at least do something with it. When these chipsets run cool they are okay machines. However, I would get an AMD minipc instead. AMD may have some drivers issues in Windows and Linux, but at least they don't turn themselves into an expensive paper weight with half the power of a Pentium 4 when they are little hot.
@MayaPosch

@@xeienar The N95, N100 and up (N300) etc. in the Alder Lake family are a far cry from those older chips. They use Xe-LP for the iGPU and a much more refined process node for the 4-8 Skylake-based 'efficiency cores'. No SMT, but in benchmarks the CPU itself comes pretty close to the performance of a 2015-era i7 6700K (first Skylake), which was the high-end CPU of the time.

Better get decent quality wireless keyboard + mouse set. Dedicated Raspberry Pi keyboard is just cheap ass chicklet keyboard known from budget laptops not good for decent desktop experience. If you wan't that all-in-one like PC with Pi just mount it behind your monitor. Still RPi as a desktop PC will be rather lacking. You can get used Dell all-in-one PC with Intel i5 on board for twice the price of the Pi. It will be more capable with any popular Linux distro. Pi + power supply + cooler + RTC battery + HDMI adapter = $112, but you would be stupid to rely on a USB stick for your data, so add the M.2 adapter and an SSD. Oops! There hasn’t been a day where I have missed Windows. I only upgraded to a 5 because WTH I love my 4, it’s only 100 up, and now I have an extra 4 to play around with. Hmmm… the possibilities… I have a Pi 4 for my daily browsing, another 4 for watching tv (and a couple other things), a Steam Deck for gaming (and every now and then stuff the Pi can’t do but the Deck/Arch can), and an iPhone to help me get through my on-the-go day as a disabled person.

Imagine what will happen to the SBC market by the time Raspberry (and Orange etc.) Pi 6 and 7 are going to be released. Intel will have a real problem at its hands, as they will have to offer the same performance as ARM SBCs. But that means they won't be able to ask a premium for their high-end SoCs anymore. The question is if Intel will be able to pivot to its foundry services or simply fade away.

Try to test the video playing on a non-overclocked system. There are reports that frame dropping goes worse when overclocked. The RPi, even #5, has its memory connected via 32-bit bus and this is the performance limiter. This can also explain frame dropping when overclocked: CPU needs more memory bandwidth I used RPi 400 as a desktop replacement in summer, when the big PC was overheating my room. The 400, when properly overclocked, was -near- enough to do simple everyday tasks (=browsing the net). If the RPi5 is really 2-3x faster than this, it would be enough. For heavy tasks I have a standard, big PC.

I'm not sure if it's possible to do blender renders over a compute cluster, but that's one thing that comes to mind, personally.

Certain machine learning workloads can scale over an ethernet switch, certain types of rendering or scientific computation and so on will also scale over a cluster. Some types of workstation workloads may actually require certain things be compiled / rendered over a long period of time (even with a powerful machine) and so you could get multiple concurrent workloads processing at the same time on each of the boards of the cluster. I absolutely understand what you're trying to say, but I think this is a case of your individual experience with your particular workloads coloring your opinion on the matter. Even though I could have used the built-in Wifi, I choose to disable it ( for security reasons ) and everything is on LAN cables, closed loop. That's the True potential of the Pi's. it's cheap, it has good horsepower and tons of supports. I tried to give it a chance for an Orange Pi 5 to build a Auto 1 DIN System. Built a custom 12V to 5V dc-dc converter separately, had a 1 DIN case from an old Radio Stereo Cassette , but I had lots of problems trying to connect a GPS module to it and gave up.

My self and a few of my friends have opted not to purchase the new Pi 5 as where we were HUGE fans of the Pi 3 and Pi 4. In 2024, this product just doesn't make sense given the lower performance and price point. The Intel N100 mini PC for $100+ and that's with memory and storage included. I think the Pi 5 might be the last of its kind. I see current options that beat the Pi 5 only getting more powerful in the near future. The Pi 3 and Pi 4 were the right products at the right time. The Pi 5 is too little too late, but that's okay. Products do die out, and it happens every day. When one door closes, new ones open. I've sold all of my old Pi stuff and have opted for a N100 mini PC. Very powerful, extremely cheap and it absolutely destroys The Pi 5. Did I mention it's tiny?

Rpi's are versatile for different projects and applications but for desktop performance its not even competition against mini pcs.They will blow rpi5's out of the water in the same price point. their size is may be only twice as big and a brand new one comes with ssd, ram, case, power adapter etc all you need to get it up and running for only $150 windows11 pre installed. pretty much the same price as rpi5 after you buy everything you need to get it up and running.

When it comes to desktop use the Pi 5 just can't compete with a used thin client PC. I have both. Sure the Pi 5 is new hardware but a quad core thin client (mine is a Dell Wyse 5070) is cheaper, more powerful, it already has a case, it has a power supply, it has a cooling solution, it has SSD storage, there's a lot more I/O and upgradeability. Plus you can use a standard 64-bit Windows install and not worry about performance issues. At least in my opinion there's no contest.

A drawback of the Pi5 is that it no longer has hardware video encoding, only decoding. I was curious to learn how you connect SSD to it and how it performs.

For what most people use it for, email, web browsing and playing solitaire, it will 100% replace a giant desktop computer… But, so will those “mini-computers” that are capable of mounting on the back of the monitor. It’s 100% going to depend on what you’re going to try to use it for. As what it’s intended for, your desktop computer will not even come close to.

It can't play 1080p 30Hz smoothly, it cant even play Half-Life. No PCIe and coming in at almost $100, it is a hard pass from me, and should be for everyone else as well, unless you have a very specific use case for it where it works better than other options--which is hard for me to imagine.

What a missed opportunity. Pi foundation removed the hardware encoders and decoders, meaning sluggish performance for both watching videos and video calls. IDK what kind of work involves just browsing web and maybe just using google docs. I would much rather prefer one of the rk3588 boards which now has h264,h265 hardware encoders and decoders. They are now working on av1 decode for the board too. Also, the built-in m.2 and emmc support is so nice to have on an “everyday” board.
