It therefore has NO hope of making it through the Loveland Trials, the world's toughest EV test, without running out of juice, but just how far can you make it? Let's find out together!

When the battery gets to 0%, you still have 5 miles reserve. I did 16 miles when the dash said 9 miles. It's ok on the battery if you take it down to dead because the BMS cuts the power, not the battery being low. There is still enough power in the battery to keep it happy. If you do run the car until it dies, when you charge it, it probably won't drive even when the battery is full. You have to pull the service plug from next to the SAM, leave it a few minutes and refit it. Then the car will reset and will be fine. I have run my battery flat on 1 occasion and after that, it actually improved the overall battery capacity.

You should have taken it all the way to empty. If the car has a feature to cut itself off and then still let you drive into a parking space it's not going to be totally dead. And how heavy could that car be to get onto that trailer. Plus it looked like even with the super low state of charge you still had two out of three kilowatt power bars which means that it probably still had some more reserve. Considering it went over the rated mileage and going up those steep hills that is really impressive I would not call it a failure. The rated miles are for super flat terrain which is much more efficient. Really glad to see you testing electric cars!

Hey at the end of your testing with this thing, maybe you could look into upgrading the battery? There are a ton of other "early evs" with early inefficient battery tech, and if they can be upgraded they would fit a lot if people's needs just great. So if you could give it a try and test the results (you already a baseline) and see if its worth it, I'm sure many people would be interested in that. Who knows, maybe you could add fast charging?

Battery health on EVs is very important component. It’s not recommended to charge past 80% or deplete the battery below 20%. And you should budget 10% to ensure you make it to a charging station. Before going below 20% This leaves only about 50% of useable battery.. on EPA 68 miles. That’s about 35 miles... Pro tip for getting the most miles on highway: tailgate a semi. 👍

Nice video Tommy/Roman , you would have easily gone further if there was no construction zone, how much i do not know, when new some one blog i was reading here in Canada one blogger was saying he got beyond the rated EPA distance always unless they ran the A/C his claim was 82/83 miles with 5/6% battery left and most EV companies say never left it go below 15% I am considering one of these used for my commute to work in the summer months and my Volvo in the winter months, my drive is all highway, totally flat and the distance round trip is 50 miles so it will easily do it and we have the cheapest hydro rates in North America and my employer is going to be installing plugs in the next year , we are on a direct line from 7 sisters hydro electric dam shared with rolling mills next door to us so the commercial user rate is like 3.2 cents/per kilowatt hour and would be payroll deduction for me which would be awesome, i am surprised no one in Germany has come up with a way to convert these Smart cars to be able to faster charge even if it was 50% faster, so instead of 6.5 hrs , 3/3.5 hrs is a huge difference and when the battery needs replacing the new one will have at least 25 % better range and capacity this i don't doubt now i just have to find one here in Canada at a decent price, great video 👍

I agree, if that would run longer it’ll be better.

The fact that you did so much highway driving hurt the range. I get my best range when doing city driving (around 100 miles without the heat on). The traffic actually improves your range due to it not using much electricity when stopped. Drag is proportional to the square of the velocity.

If it had fast charging capability it would be so much less anxiety producing! But overall not a bad test!

Fun car! I was even considering it 6 years ago before I got my first LEAF. I just checked at fueleconomy.gov and was so surprised that this tiny tiny car is less efficient than the 2016 Nissan LEAF! 30kWh.

What are the prospects with modding this thing? Maybe upgrade to a higher capacity battery, add a second battery, or both to maximize driving range...

I live 60 miles from my job and in DC traffic everyone wrecks so lots of idle time as well. My 2017 Camry Xie 4 cyl has 104k miles on it trouble free still drives and sounds new surprisingly. For my life and commute electric has 0 interest at this time, but interesting to see if average person who doesn't drive zillion miles a year deals with ownership

It has a 21kW charger in Europe... that's a full charge in 50 minutes. I guess Smart decided against that, because basically no American household has 400V outlets.

I much prefer it to driving I-70 with its steep grades. That’s the route I always take heading west, exiting to US40 and over Berthoud Pass.

@@TFLcar DO you guys do a Range Test like this on Tesla Model Y or 3? If so link me to it. I like to know the real range for those especially in Colorado with mountains.

I also had a 2015 Smart ED. When new I could get 92 miles before it quit. (All city). How much battery degradation does it have? At the end of lease the buyout was $18,700, plus the battery lease of $5,400. I offered $10k. Mercedes said no. You have a good car.

I suppose next will be driving a combine around NY City and saying you could drive this around the city, this is a commuter inter city car, use it, that way

I got my Smart ED down to 2%...and it never slowed down my power output.
