www.moxfield.com/decks/M5chVVVlREW5rMsXaO574g built this deck as a riff of your deck a couple of months ago. really fun. like having oloro as the commander
YESSSS I've been so excited for this video, fantastic work! This is my favorite deck to play as well. My list is always somewhat in flux as I love to try new things. Playing Mardu Tevesh and Akiri to give me access to the red extra turn spells and Tevesh draws us so many cards to set up our Lich Lock asap! Tevesh being able to sacrifice academy rector is oh so nice www.moxfield.com/decks/sStwLYIGtUyQQtaHJlHTgg
I'm pretty sure you helped me out with this one on reddit a while back. I opted for red instead of green to allow for extra turn and harmless offering shenanigans. tappedout.net/mtg-decks/yore-tiller-lich/
www.moxfield.com/decks/oaU_LFbiqUOe37y-Ff2qag I apologize for the messiness of this list, it's in the midst of a major rebuild. A while back, a friend of mine who had recently gotten into EDH was trying to find a deck that, in their words, "Didn't play like other decks." I immediately thought of Aetherlich, and since we couldn't decide on the four-color partners or a Zur the Enchanter version, we each built one. I have never had as much fun as I have in pods with MULTIPLE liches - the shenaniganry is truly mind boggling, and I am absolutely certain we didn't adjudicate all the rules interactions properly, but we didn't care. It's a total blast. My build is the Zur build, with a snow sub-theme to play good sweepers and the new immortality combo of Book of Exalted Deeds with Faceless Haven. Turns out, Haven is an angel, so you can turn your land into a Platinum Angel! I can't wait to pull this off in a game.
I have been playing this deck for a long time now since I saw you play it on an early one of oliva's streams and I love it so much. I was originally playing it with Zur as the commander but recently switched to tymna and kydel as the new enchantress cards in mh2 slot in really nice. I have also loved nine lives in the deck and I also find glacial chasm helps buy me some time especially with crop rotation. One of the most enjoyable decks to pilot it's always a challenge. Thank you for all the ground work.
worth noting, if you have the mana (or some means of casting for free), approach the second sun is essentially just a free wincon as u shuffle it down 7 and gain 7 life which means u draw 7 from lich's mastery and can play it again (winning the game) immediately after
I love the passion put into this deck tech, every second of it shows how much this came from a place of love. It gets me worked up thinking about doing a thorough deck tech on Greven Predator Captain again, I love these detailed heart felt techs
im wanting to find a way to mix this deck idea into my already existing esper control deck lol i LOVE lichs in dnd (played a few necromancers that wanted to in time become a lich) so seeing something like this gives me joy
My first attempt at a Lich build was a Damia deck that used Horizon Chimera with Lich's Mastery to draw the entire library and then use Cadaverous Bloom to cast a massive Torment of Hailfire
Thank you for this. I commented on your Twitter once about getting a video for this, so glad that maybe that stuck in your memory. I’ve tried goldfishing this in the past and felt lost when it came to what to tutor for. As a fairly new L1, piloting this deck in a pod should be a fun way to test my knowledge on replacement effects.
I've enjoyed playing strands of night with urborg tomb of yawgmoth style effects in a more casual setting. 2BB enchantment, BB Pay 2 life, Sacrifice a Swamp: Return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield Great for recycling martyr of sands or especially children of korlis over and over. I feel like zur also makes a great aetherlich general, being able to find the majority of your key protection enchantments. I believe similar cards are played in the old legacy/Canadian highlander deck called "Tin Fins" back in the day so might be a good idea to check those decks out for other tech :) Great video! Excited to brew something up now ❤️
Great video and was recommended to pop by from Joey’s 100 commanders from creators video! I’ve ran a Selenia, Dark Angel lich (just without the main lich card XD) deck in the past and wanna add more colors to make my own unique spin on it. Would the Abzan Anikthea commander work as a shell for this? My biggest concern is your lich cards are easier to kill because they’re creatures x.x
I brewed up a list with Ghen, Arcanum Weaver! His ability to recur enchantments like Phyrexian Unlife and some of the pillowfort cards is VERY nice! I do miss having green and blue though which sucks. I’d love to slam a copy of sterling grove and have access to more safety nets in the form of stifle, tales end and their ilk. I think I’ll swap to a “safer” version and try to give these 2 commanders a shot. I won’t be playing the EXACT list but it did make me think that having access to green would be worthwhile, even though most of the deck is primarily based in white..
Better late than never! Have just stumbled upon this deck list, and it's absolutely awesome and a blast to play. I've been thinking of tweaking it a bit with some personal favourites like Disallow, Fractured Identity, Dismantling Wave, Arbiter of Knollridge, Everybody Lives!, and Sundial of the Infinite. However, I'm in a bit of a dilemma trying to figure out which cards to cut for these additions. Any suggestions or thoughts from the Aetherlich deck lovers would be much appreciated! Let's make this deck even more epic!
This deck inspired me to try out some lich style gameplay myself. I went full orzhov with Liesa at the helm and tried to build in a blood for power/deal with the devil theme with stuff like Vilis, broker of blood to give that vibe. The core of the deck is fully inspired by this though. Theres not many folk bold enough to play lich cards and its pretty fun. I don't tend to go full combo where possible so I missed the death star, but there's some nasty plays in there and plenty of pieces to protect my neck too.
@@TheSpikeFeeders exactly! High risk high reward but either way somethings cools gonna happen. Thanks for the vid anyway, I definitely picked up another couple bits of tech to track down.
This is an awesome video on an awesome deck. I'm sure you've considered it, but with Bolas's Citadel and Aetherflux Reservoir already in the deck, I'd want to run a Sensei's Divining Top for another route to victory.
I've been thinking about taking my current Tymna and Ikra deck and going Lich with it. It is already fairly similar but doesn't contain any lich cards. Tries to win with an aetherflux or a vizkopa guildmage/sanguine bond effect.
Aside from Platinum Angel, is there any other support to run Lich's Mastery in monoblack? I'm thinking this would be a fun add in my K'rrik/Keen Duelist/Baneful Omen deck.
@The Spike Feeders could you give some insight on some of the weird interactions that cards have with the Lich replacement effects?? For example, Words of Worship with Lich's Mastery. Are you able to pay as much mana as you have to just continue drawing cards since you'll turn the card draw into life gain into card draw into life gain etc
Hey, of course! Words of Worship and Lich's Mastery is actually the most straightforward one because LM doesn't have any replacement effects, just triggers. You can indeed pay as much mana as you have into it, and you'll draw an additional 4 cards per mana spent. Words gets hazy with the other two Liches, though. Replacement effects can only attempt to replace the same event once, so there are two scenarios we have to deal with: 1) Something gains you some life In this situation there's nothing for Words to replace yet because there's no card draw event on the stack. You pay your mana into Words and when the life gain event goes to resolve Lich will try to replace it with card draw. When you try to draw the card, Words sees that and replaces it with gaining 5 life. Lich has already replaced the life gain with card draw, though, so it doesn't try to do it again. 2) Something draws you a card In this situation you pay your mana into Words, and when you go to draw your card it'll be replaced by gain 5 life. Lich sees that you're trying to gain life and replaces it with draw 5 cards. You can continue paying into Words to gain more life if that's what you're actually trying to do (like for Aetherflux Reservoir), but Lich won't keep replacing those further instances of life gain.
So wait. Say I have Lich's Mastery on the board. I pay 50 life for Aetherflux Reservoir. Doesn't that mean I need to exile 50 things? *gulp* Wouldn't you need one of the other two Liches instead, since they only make you exile things when you take damage instead of lose life? If that's the case, why is Lich's Mastery better if it doesn't work with your main finisher? Unless I'm missing something here, please educate me because I want to build something similar!
It does, but if you're at that point you've probably already drawn a good chunk of your deck off of the lifegain triggers that got you up to a high enough life total to activate it. Alternatively, you can pair it with things like Tainted Sigil and respond to the Lich's Mastery trigger by cracking the sigil, gaining you 50 life, and drawing 50 cards that you can discard once the LM trigger resolves.
@@TheSpikeFeedersthanks for taking the time to respond! So that kinda clears it up, but now I have another concern - hear me out on this... So let's say you're at 50 life and you have 50 cards in hand. You pay 50 to aetherflux, and the "deal 50 dmg" goes on the stack. Then, on top of it, the LM trigger to exile 50 things goes on the stack (because abilities enter the stack first, and then the cost is paid after, per C.R. 602.2, meaning the LM trigger would resolve before the damage). Okay, so I exile my entire hand, and then I get to do 50 dmg to someone and take them out. Nice! Now, if I used Tainted Sigil to respond to LM, what would happen? I suppose I would first activate AR, damage ability goes on the stack. Then, LM exile effect goes on the stack. Since I've already paid the life, I can activate TS to gain 50 life. Now LM ability goes on the stack. So now the stack is, top to bottom, LM draw 50 cards, LM exile 50, AR deal 50 dmg. I would lose to decking out before I even get to do the dmg! Now, I can certainly activate AR twice more, but my LM exile trigger will be on top of those two triggers, so I'd have to exile 100 things, then deal 100 dmg, then draw 50 cards, then exile 50, then deal 50. I'd instead die when I am forced to exile LM, and if I stifle that, I'd die to decking out. Again, I'm sure I'm missing something, maybe the order is different? But I'm fairly confident, after looking into it, that the exiling and the drawing has to be done before anything else, since paying a cost happens after casting the spell, and thus the LM triggers would resolve first. In short, I can see firing off one Aetherflux, but taking everyone out at once would result in you dying before them, if I'm understanding the line correctly.
okay, wait, I think I see what you're saying. If you didn't have 50 cards in hand, you could use Tainted Sigil to get enough cards. That would work, assuming you have enough cards in library. I suppose my above post was moreso addressing your plan mentioned in the video to take out everyone at once. I can't see how you'd be able to activate AR more than once without stifling LMs trigger or getting it off the board somehow, because you'd either deck out or exile LM before killing the opponent.
The sound and editing on this was great! Thought this was gonna be an Acererak deck haha. That I do have a list for (www.moxfield.com/decks/vmuVTPbUmU26qvQt3CKSqQ). Though this vid did inspire me to finally try building one in this vain, going to try Firja at the helm (double synergy and sick showcase art). A while ago I helped a friend make a Lich/Phage deck with Ghen as the commander, and Lich's Mastery was so fun in that deck!
More, actually. with Lich's Mastery up he can just set up an advantageous hand and board state, pass turn through how many cycles you skipped, and finish you off when you reappear. Or just use a laboratory maniac/thassa's oracle type effect.
