Thank you for this series. I was thinking once to make my car soundproof like this, and I forgot about that idea, and suddenly you came up in my recommendations. Watched all the parts. A little bit of pity that it comes to an end :)

Very kind of you to say! It started as a little idea in my head and I decided to run with it. It is A LOT of work. I've currently just finished using some mass loaded vinyl on the boot floor and I have learnt quite a lot from using it, but that video won't drop for a while as I'm waiting for some more supplies to come in. Thank you for watching!

I love these videos on sound reducing simply because...I can relate. They're very real-world for me. I know after watching them that if I decide to have a go myself, I'm going to have the exact same experience. Not like watching a pro who shows us how to do it with a complete shop and all the tools and materials they have at their disposal. Thanks!

Thank you! Very kind! To your point, I think that is what put me off sound proofing initially. When you see most videos, the car is all stripped down, seats are out and it looks like a precise military operation, which is fine, but not for someone who's never done it before 😂 I am still working away in the background and hope to have more videos up soon!

I think it's important to point out that the microphone in your phone will automatically adjust gain to reach a desireable volume in the video. So, while the sound deadening may be quieter, it just won't translate through video, because the phone adjusts the gain to reach a similar volume output. Unless you use a proper dB meter or change microphone, you're not going to be able to properly show any results outside of real life.

Hey, Gulag. I'm actually using an external mic that allows you to control the gain, so it does accurately reflect the sound that you hear, but I do agree that it probably isn't the best way to reflect the changes. I'll be picking up a decibel meter shortly. Thanks for the suggestion!

Apparently you're supposed to have a foam layer between the MLV and the metal so it is isolated from vibration.

Exactly, somewhat like a sandwich. I've been using the Kilmat butyl mats + the Siless foam and will add mass-loaded vinyl where it makes sense and isn't too challenging to work with.

Interesting stuff. Ive always noticed how crap or noneyistent soundproofing is on a lot of vehicles. Especially commercial vans.

Yeah, it's an easy way to cut costs. I do need to revisit this as since filming, there are a few ideas that might make more of a difference. A few people have recommended stuffing the underneath of the dashboard with reconstituted foam, but I do worry about the potential fire hazard!

Do the wheel arches with some rust protective foam thingy while your at it :P Not cheap though unless diy.

as I can hear, your mic or recording application has autogain with some level of noise/wind cancelation. you have to use 3rd party sound recorder and set manual gain when recording. if you were using built in camera app then it will always automatically gain and reduce wind effect.

I'm using an external mic (Shure MV88) that has no auto gain. You can set gain to match audio sources.

Best tip but tyres that produce 66db you ill knotice the difference then.
@rkan2

Yeah. I noticed real life outside one of the quietest cars was on Michelin Primacy 4s. Not quite 66dB, but could be the frequency as well. Might also be different inside than outside.

I'll be looking to pick up some new tires to help with the sound, for sure!

Absolutely that’s the easiest and quickest way to reduce road noise. That’s the first job, then move on to sound deadening material if required.

Mine are 69db tires I have not seen any tire below 67db in my size (205/55) and they are already phenomenal.

Has the extra weight of all the sound deadening affected your mpg?
@jamieaygo
@jamieaygo 6 месяцев назад
It's too early to tell yet. I still haven't finished because I'm trying to be a scientific as I can with measurements, but ultimately, I think it is inevitable that it will. I'm still currently getting about 47 MPG, which isn't bad at all. This is obviously based on how I drive, etc. I'll be sure to update once it's done!

@@jamieaygothanks for the reply. Yeah a couple of mpg less is worth the saving on your ears 😝

It feels like it would be so easy and cheap to add this at the manufacturing stage with cheap materials and a straightforward application, shame they continue to cut costs in these areas even while mainstream car prices reach luxury territory sometimes.

They should really. My 17 year old Volvo has more Soundproofing than most new cars which is ridiculous.
