This MCM dresser was so beat up I wasn't even sure I should bother trying to save it. I started by cutting off the veneer damage on the base. I then had to rebuild the base to support new legs. Once that was done, I was able to move on to stripping, sanding, and repairs. I used a carbide scraper to remove the finish on the top and the top two drawers. I sanded the body and other drawers and prepped them for paint. There were some gouges and scratches I had to fill in. For the deeper gouges I used Bondo wood filler and for the shallower nicks I used Bondo Glazing Putty. I applied two coats of Bin shellac primer followed by two coats of Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel paint in satin. This paint does not require a topcoat. For the top, I wanted to do a paint wash. I started by spraying a coat of Shellac over the raw wood. This seals the wood and helps the paint wash go on less blotchy. I started with a lighter wash using the body color in a 4:1 ratio of water to paint. Just brush it on and wipe it back off. Once that dried, I did a tan wash to even it all out using Algonquin by Fusion Mineral paint, but you can use any tan colored paint. I sealed it with 2 coats of General Finishes High Performance Topcoat in Dead Flat. Lastly, I cleaned and resprayed the hardware in a brushed gold and lined all the drawers. Whew, that was a lot of work. Did I save it?
Tell me what you think?

I love seeing how you can take something that needs so much TLC and turn it beautiful again. It gives me hope that if i ever attempt to redo my own furniture it will be beautiful and salvageable. I have tons to learn before i can even attempt that, though.

Beautiful! Thank you for putting forth the effort to save this piece. You are amazing at all the work you do. Very impressed that you do not use a Surf Prep sander! They are expensive, very grateful that you instruct without the use of one. You rock!

Aw, thank you! Yes, I don’t have fancy equipment. I am saving up for a Festool sander though. ☺️ It’s amazing what you can do with simple supplies. The fancy stuff just makes it easier and probably quicker. ☺️😬

I seldom,if ever,use that overworked word AMAZING!!! But it is just the right word to describe your making the difference between life and death in this piece. Balanced well with wood and paint,feet and hardware with this color. Thank you. Stay well

I think you did an extraordinary job. I have been buying furniture for a long long time but Basset is not a good quality. In fact it is one level below Broyhill which is also a low quality brand. This blond furniture reminds me of the stuff we put in our 18 unit motel that my parents bought in 1960 on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale. I hated it then and still do to this day..HOWEVER…after seeing your talent you make me love this style as long as it is painted and updated. Bottom line is I would never try to flip a piece of Basset. I would save my energy and time for higher end furniture that is really made well. But you are truly gifted and talented. I will keep watching.
@ivylaneinteriors
@ivylaneinteriors Год назад
I agree, not all Bassets are of equal quality. The blond finish is mahogany and still better quality than a lot of the mass produced pieces today, but their walnut pieces are better quality. My favorite pieces are usually Drexel, Thomasville, and Century. Which are yours?
@Camille719
@Camille719 Год назад
@@ivylaneinteriors i have a house full of predominantly Thomasville but I also have some Berkeley & Gay, White, Dixie & Lexington Timberlake. I bought a set of Basset for my nursery in 1974. It had a photo finish on it which looked like crap in no time. Since then I have stayed away from it. Have you thought of getting “in” with auction houses? They often reject a lot of furniture that ends up in their dumpster or out on the curb. You can get it for free.
@ivylaneinteriors
@ivylaneinteriors Год назад
@@Camille719 I haven't refinished a Berkeley & Gay yet. They're not such common in my area. I like Dixie too. We don't have many auction houses here, but it's definitely something I should look into. Thanks!

Totally worth the work. I like the new base even better. Is there bondo or wood filler on the top of the dresser that was white/tan washed? I wondered if the washes might conceal wood filler or bondo repairs, or is it too transparent. Great tip on shellac first before washes!
@ivylaneinteriors
@ivylaneinteriors Год назад
Thanks! It’s wood filler. I haven’t had success with paint washes covering Bondo.

@ivylaneinteriors Thanks Lisa! I've been flipping furniture for over a year now, but have only been using Facebook Marketplace to sell with very mixed results. Just recently your video on Estsy/UShip came up in my line feed and I watched it. I recently signed up for Etsy & Uship, and I'm in the final process of beefing up inventory to post on it. My quality work is worth so much more than what I've been getting on Facebook. Do you now sell most of your stuff on Etsy instead of Facebook? Thanks again! 😀
@ivylaneinteriors
@ivylaneinteriors Месяц назад
@@hikinbootz it’s a mix. I sell from my Facebook business page, marketplace, Etsy, and I also post it on Instagram. That’s how some people find it. I had one person find me on Etsy and they were local, so they just picked it up. I definitely try to be patient and wait for the right buyer. That’s the hardest part. I usually give it at least two weeks or a month before I lower the price. Sometimes it just takes time to find the right person.

@ivylaneinteriors No doubt about it, patience is a virtue in this business! Unfortunately my home is currently looking like a warehouse, LOL 😆 Thanks for all your input and I'm looking forward to utilizing all these additional platforms 👍
@ivylaneinteriors
@ivylaneinteriors Месяц назад
@@hikinbootz Patience is definitely needed! That is also why I try to source pieces that I know are desirable so they have a better chance of selling at a higher profit margin.
