This MCM dresser was so beat up I wasn't even sure I should bother trying to save it. I started by cutting off the veneer damage on the base. I then had to rebuild the base to support new legs. Once that was done, I was able to move on to stripping, sanding, and repairs. I used a carbide scraper to remove the finish on the top and the top two drawers. I sanded the body and other drawers and prepped them for paint. There were some gouges and scratches I had to fill in. For the deeper gouges I used Bondo wood filler and for the shallower nicks I used Bondo Glazing Putty. I applied two coats of Bin shellac primer followed by two coats of Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel paint in satin. This paint does not require a topcoat. For the top, I wanted to do a paint wash. I started by spraying a coat of Shellac over the raw wood. This seals the wood and helps the paint wash go on less blotchy. I started with a lighter wash using the body color in a 4:1 ratio of water to paint. Just brush it on and wipe it back off. Once that dried, I did a tan wash to even it all out using Algonquin by Fusion Mineral paint, but you can use any tan colored paint. I sealed it with 2 coats of General Finishes High Performance Topcoat in Dead Flat. Lastly, I cleaned and resprayed the hardware in a brushed gold and lined all the drawers. Whew, that was a lot of work. Did I save it?
