This little Bassett was a wedding gift for a family friend. I worked with the bride to customize something for her. She wanted a mid century modern style in all wood. It took me awhile to find a dresser in good enough condition for a full refinish. After scraping and sanding, I was ready to move on to finish. She liked the raw wood look. I tried a green wash and tan wash, but it was pulling gray and purple undertones. After checking with my Instagram friend, Linda from 412flips, she recommended I take a look at the color wheel and see what was opposite purple. Yellow is on the opposite side and should cancel it. I tried adding some yellow to my tan wash and that did the trick. After tan washing the entire dresser, I sealed it with two coats of a matte poly.

I'd actually consider marriage again if I could get a dresser like that as a gift! I love how the wood tones are slightly varied on the drawer fronts. Such a nice job.

I'm new to your channel and I just want to thank you for leaving the sounds of you working in the video instead of dubbing music over them. I find these sounds soothing as I watch and so many furniture channels us awful music

This is so beautiful! Friendly tip. I used to spray without a mask and then I ran my dehumidifier in the garage when I was spraying and I couldn't believe how much paint was in it when it was so far away from what I was painting. Made me realize I really need to wear a mask! save them lungs.

My husband and I have always been attracted to the darker woods, but there's something to say for that light color, especially if you do it, because it's really beautiful!

I’m not the biggest fan of white washes but the tone you achieved with this is actually really pretty. I think when I’ve previously seen others do this technique they always go a little too heavy with paint-for my personal taste. However, what you did here really does look like light beautiful wood, not painted wood! Beautiful work Lisa 👏❤️

Yeah, white washes and tan washes are tricky. I don't like them too opaque or it obscures the wood grain. Thanks Natalie!

I am not a fan of this Pottery Barn look personally( my mom had a “blonde/ natural bedroom suit from the early 50’s when I was growing up and I never liked it! ). That being said, you Lisa, have such a gift and you did such a beautiful job I ended up loving what you did! As you said, it’s tricky….and I think many just don’t get it right. But then, you are the Wood Wizard! I love everything you do and learn so much. Thank you for sharing.

I’ll tell you a secret…I’m not a huge fan of it either. 😅 I love the richness of a darker wood color, but it’s what she wanted. I’m actually doing another one right now and went light with it, mainly because a darker stain would have highlighted the imperfections. Wood is weird 🤷‍♀️

I love the tan wash but have not had good luck with it. I wind up using Au Natural gel stain from Dixie Belle. I never thought about adding yellow or green to help.

Yeah, they are tricky. I've never tried the lighter gel stains. I know people love the Lilly Moon ones too.

Wow! That was a LOT of work. Looks great! Do you have any tips on how to use a carbide scraper at the edge of the piece WITHOUT the tool slipping and gouging the wood?
@ivylaneinteriors
@ivylaneinteriors 8 месяцев назад
My top tips would be 1. Sharp blade 2. Light pressure - if you’re blade is sharp you won’t have to use much pressure. 3. Use a full stroke and scrape off the edge. I’ll try to make a short on it. 🙌🏼

I know! I took it one drawer a day just to help space all the scraping and sanding out.
