This massive dresser flip was a beast of a project. I’m not sure if I would have tackled it in highsight. It was a super dark finish with 4 different wood species. I stripped it to raw and re-stained it in antique walnut. Do you like it?

I have the SurfPrep 3x4 and still get pigtail marks. I’m slowly learning how to avoid that. But it is nice for corners and those pesky nooks and crannies! Love your end result!

You did a lovely job. I think you should list it to reflect the work you put into it. Including the estate sale shopping. It can easily be restyled a bit. You could even offer that for an extra fee. I would hype up the value in your listing. It has a quality maker. Furniture like this is no longer manufactured. With the drawer space, the built in book shelves, that piece holds a lot and does it beautifully. It could go in a studio apartment and hide being used as a bedroom dresser. Its an investment piece. I would price it accordingly. Personally, if I was looking for a piece like that, I would swap the hardware & maybe store the originals in an inconspicuous part of the piece. She is a princess. I would market her accordingly.

I love it. I personally love all the graining and varied wood tones. That ( in my mind) is why you did all the work to strip and restore in the first place. Well done Queen Wood Wizard. I liked the antique walnut stain best btw, but also the mixed walnut/ brown mahogany.

In hindsight, I agree. 🙃 Since it’s a bachelor’s chest, I just felt a warm tone would compliment it better but all those varying wood tones 😩

I learn so much from watching your videos! Thanks for taking all the time to share this with us. I do think the dresser ended up looking beautiful and was a good learning experience, even for a pro like you. Wondering if in the end,though, it would sell just as easily painted without all the labor of sanding and refinishing. Not all things should be painted. I guess it's a matter of how much we want to stick with the refinishing process. Thanks again.

Oh, trust me, in the middle of this project I was wondering the same thing. 🫠 The quality was so amazing and since it was a bachelors chest I felt keeping it wood was in keeping with the feel of the piece. I don’t know. Sometimes you just have to try it and see what happens. 🤷‍♀️

I love the antique walnut! That piece is supposed to be "darkish," and the antique walnut did the trick without making it too dark. You've brought the old gal into the 21st century without making her "all tarted up!" I now have my mother's Bernhardt Asian Campaign pieces, including a secretary-desk unit with display space. After forty-odd years, they all need some TLC. I've been watching how you updated pieces from that line, and now I'm gathering my courage! Thank you for the inspiration and for sharing the "this is what's really going to happen" parts as well.

You did a great job! Pigtail swirls are the bane of my existence! I’ve tried EVERYTHING and no matter how light my pressure is, how slowly I move, how often I change the pads, how I go from 80 to 150 to 220, I STILL GET PIGTAIL SWIRLS with my Surfprep. It drives me bananas. I think I’m the only person I know that isn’t a fan of the Surfprep.

I’ve heard that if you follow the sandpaper numbers in order that you shouldn’t get swirl marks. I mean you start with 100 for example and then go to 120, 180 then 220. that’s a tip that’s helped me avoid those pesky marks when using my orbital sander. A nightmare of a piece, but it turned out beautiful.

The walnut color fits the traditional style of this piece. The red tones would not have suited it, IMHO. I did not vote, but I liked the walnut best when you put the poll out.

Awesome as usual. Have you tried replacing the sanding pad with an ultra soft one and adding a foam interface pad to reduce the swirl marks?

Yeah, I’ve tried lots of things. I’m adjusting the settings on both my sander and dust extractor and that seems to be helping. 🙌🏼

I can understand your uncertainty on this one. The wood grain after stripping wasn't as special as many of the pieces you have previously done. The walnut is beautiful, but it always bugs me a little when different wood types take the stain differently. I've seen people use spray toner to even out the colors. It will sell because you do exceptional work.

I’ve used toners on other projects, but never considered it for this one. 🙃 That probably would have helped on the drawers. That’s where the varying tones were bothering me. It’s actually kinda growing on me. 😅

I tend to use the gel stain most and that’s not in their color line. They do have a few lighter colors I need to try.

I hate hand sanding because of the time it takes, but sometimes it is what you have to but until I can get a Surfprep it is what it is. Have you heard of this sanders?

Yes, I’m familiar with them and have done a ton of research. Some people love them and some people hate them. Since I have a Festool, I’m considering the RTS 400. We’ll see 🤔

Great for lingerie in walk in closet. Pros would use toners to adjust for various woods. Do what other amateurs do - paint.

Yes, it would be perfect for a closet! I’ve only used toner by adding a dye stain to my topcoat. I haven’t tried the Mohawk toners yet. 🙌🏼

Honey 80 grit is way too heavy of a paper to use especially after you already stripped it. Hence the swirl marks.

I should clarify that I only used 80 grit where there was still finish, but 120 after that. I don’t know. I’m still tweaking my settings on my sander and dust extractor. I’ll figure it out. 🤷‍♀️

I do like the tone. I don’t like anything orange or red. Colour choice is truly a subjective thing.

You went right back to what you stripped off. It would have been much better to have painted a lighter color. Not my cup of tea but if you like it, great. It just looks the same as it was ....
