Loud pipes are not the 100% life savers on their own, but they sure do help to establish your presence. Some of them literally make my car vibrate, alerting me to the bike's presence.
I would agree with this video but I’ve been in situations where I was driving on the highway with my music on in rush hour traffic and I started to hear a motorcycles engine. Because of the loud bike I started looking in my mirrors to see where the bike was and I didn’t switch lanes until I had eyes on the rider. Usually I don’t even switch lanes until the motorcycle has passed since they probably want to get out of the cluster of traffic that they’re in. I know a lot of people are unaware while driving or don’t know what a loud car engine versus a motorcycle engine sounds like but there has to be at least some people that do make a conscious effort to drive more cautiously when they hear that motorcycle but can’t see it
@@johngreer3055 I do agree with you for sure, you can definitely hear the bike coming and then look for it. My thoughts are more for the fact that if you’re coming fast enough for a “fatal” accident there’s not enough time to hear and then react in time etc. there of course are exceptions to that but not enough to make the rule worth saying.
Loud pipe helps me when I am filtering the traffic. That is only situation I noticed that people notice me comming, also I don't speed when filtering just run the engine few times to say I need some space here and it works everytime.
@@notgnar8506 lol the saying “loud pipes saves lives” is not about pedestrians it’s about motorcyclists. Your loud exhaust should definitely wake up someone walking that isn’t paying attention but why on earth are you doing crash level speeds through a pedestrian zone. Slow down, and if they don’t see you, emergency brake to a stop or maneuver around them. Most cars don’t have a loud exhaust and were expected to not hit pedestrians, that point is moot.
@@notgnar8506 I’m not disagreeing that they don’t have meaning. Did you watch the video? I gave the context and the credit where they are helpful and DO provide safety - but the saying regardless of the subject is “saves lives” and the science does not back that up enough to make it true, as safe operation and awareness will be better 99.9% of the time
good insight on loud exhaust vs actual rider safety. imo, the "loud pipes save lives" ideology applies on a case to case basis as well as where you live. if narrow streets and a dense amount of pedestrians then definitely your presence will be established with the loud bike. still boils down to the rider's awareness/preparedness, dresscode and skills.
A combination of both loud pipes and situational awareness can save ur ass.. just cause my bike is loud as f*** doesn’t mean I’m going to relay on just that I gotta make it home to my baby girl and wife defensive driving will get u home safe.. in simple terms just avoid the cagers 😂
Loud pipes are not the 100% life savers on their own, but they sure do help to establish your presence. Of course this heavily depends on the surrounding...on the open freeway not so much, but inside the city where sound bounces off buildings and resonates, it literally does not matter if the bike is behind you, you are going to hear or even feel it. Some of them literally make my car vibrate, alerting me to the bike being near me somewhere.
In South Australia, or as we like to call it "the nanny state" there's a very good chance it will save your life. Here they will defect your bike and they can even crush it under the hoon law, maybe take your licence away depending on how many points you have left therefore stopping you from riding and give you a huge fine.
The exhaust helped me several times. But just like anything else its not 100% and absolutely cannot be relied on. Any bike i own i always have exhaust i think its worth it.
Loud pipes help definitely, if it’s even 25% way better than nothing. Relying on one system to do everything is not enough.Riding skill, practicing emergency maneuvers, situational awareness and every bit of gear a person can afford. To all those who find it uncomfortable your choice however the pavement, and all the other places we pass by could care less. Those stationary and inanimate places will take everything if left unchecked and not given the correct attention.
@@MurffSurff I agree it definitely can help! I think as I mentioned in the video it’s just not enough to fit the mentality or the phrasing, and better skills and awareness will always be your best bet. Thanks for watching!
You don't understand decibels Big big difference between 70dB and 85dB 15dB difference about 32 times louder (power) So 116dB... is obnoxiously loud But you are right about this myth (not sure if my math is correct)
@@bjack7282 no I do understand! I’m not saying bikes aren’t louder in general, just not enough with all the other factors added in to make a difference at higher/road speeds. IMO.
in lane splitting states loud pipes factually save lives. in ca its a must people split lanes in 4 wheeled vehicles here lol arguably one of the worst road rage states too so the more people hear the bike the safer it is for the rider imo
@@nicknoonkester4852 well again I think it comes down to speed because at low speed lane splitting I absolutely agree with you, but if you’re splitting at highway speed it doesn’t matter you are past the car before they hear you, and then at low speed it most of the time is not going to be a fatal accident if they were not to hear you.
How about the life it might save thats not a biker. The person who may be crossing in a traffic jam, while you filter. They will hear you coming. Or how about wildlife, if an animal heared you a mile away its going to run the opposite way frrom the road not in front of your bike, possibly saving both your lives.
@@oldrifter I don’t disagree that it can def help in the case of pedestrians and even animals to a degree. But as I mentioned to another commenter that really only is the case for slow speeds - which I mentioned in the video. You shouldn’t be traveling at fatal speeds through pedestrian areas and animals will unfortunately still run out in the road as sound can be disorienting. There are plenty of video examples of deer jumping in front of bikers that have a loud exhaust etc.
