I was a custom applicator from the late 80's to the late 90's and I gotta tell ya... That ol' Haggie monster was Living History Farms machinery 40 years ago. No kidding I can't believe you got a decent spray pattern out of it. I figure all your equipment should be on 38 or 36 inch row so thats not too bad, and clean everything out and run some spray cleaner and put some crop oil (ask the neighbors) in the pump etc. to make them last. Also USE RUBBER GLOVES AND WEAR PANTS when handling and mixing!! The hands are the no.1 source of exposure. Any more questions don't be afraid to ask. Also you might call Haggie and ask them for advice, they might come up with some help over the winter. Great job!

Box cutter cleans surfaces level and cuts, pliers hold and open pretty much anything and screw driver is perfect tool to get o rings etc out and position things, plus cleaning hard to read areas. Though i do mostly small and microscopic stuff.

This is by far my favorite series. I like “stuff that runs” probably more than a specific car. Then it actually gets used. Cant wait for the combine videos. Or maybe a mounted corn picker and hand shelling. :) don’t forget about a grain truck too.
@garyburgmylifeandtimes6354
@garyburgmylifeandtimes6354 Год назад
The sprayer was definitely one of your most challenging restorations but there are so many moving parts, it was a small miracle you made it to the field and actually sprayed. My hats off for this whole series, can’t wait to see you get the corn picker/combine working next. You better start working on that now so you’ll be ready for harvest 😉😁
@alan6832
@alan6832 Год назад
Yes, starting sooner is good advice. As for the sprayer, I guess for next year, try to recalculate everything for 2 mph instead of 4. Actually, that seemed faster than 4 to me so confirm that it isn't. That may apply to harvesting too. Plan to do it real slow until you get enough practice to get bored, then speed it up towards normal. Also, fix the steering so it draws less attention away from all the other management tasks. Perhaps farm work should have been the priority instead of that race.
@littlewingpsc27
@littlewingpsc27 Год назад
Great video. Do be careful with those chemicals. Not sure it is good to smell the cans. I hope the corn survives it. Great learning experience. With a few mods / upgrades that sprayer might still be a keeper. Since your first "bombing run" is done, you need to paint a yellow corn cob on the sides of the tank.

I never laughed so hard in my life, but you're learning. Next time you might want to count your rows and put a flag in the row right before where you put your tire, so you can keep track of where you're at. Next time you might want to incorporate your fertilize and spray before you plant and when your corns up you can get some drip tubes and side dress your corn with 28. You might want to get Soil samples this fall after you combine and go out and find a drill so you can plant beans next year. Good luck

Crop sprayer son-in-law and I recently discussed why some farms still use over the ground equipment, when aircraft are more efficient, less expensive per acre, and don't crush crops. There are not many plantable lots that can't be sprayed from the air. Although not a farmer myself, I've lived most of my life surrounded by corn, or wheat, peas, beans, etc., and was always curious why so much effort was expended on over the ground work. My neighbour once explained that after spending millions on equipment, he figured he might as well use it for a bit. Kept the boys busy anyway. Love the videos 🕊️
@jimrankin2583
@jimrankin2583 Год назад
Cost of equipment is the first thing. The insurance required is another. Self propelled sprayers have really taken over from the planes and helicopters. They have their place, but most farms have some sort of ground sprayer or hire their spraying done by one.

Old equipment is the best, since its most simple. Try storing modern equipment into storage barn that collases on them for 40 years and try get them started.. it will never happen since too much fancy electronics to fail, rubber and plastic parts to degrade, high tolerance nozzles to clog up and seize up etc.

You got that right! My SpraCoupe has similar hydraulic steering and it’s not the most precise thing either. They have plenty of population, he’s just thinning it a little!

I look forward to the harvest... Am really hoping you do a season 2, your learning to operate that stuff now. I wanna see what happens again!

Great video JYD!! Love these farming videos! Takes me back to a time on great grandpa's farm when all you needed to fix something was a bigger hammer, a crowbar and heat!! LOL

That's a cool looking old sprayer. Pretty cool how you bring these old beasts back to life and use them on the farm again too.
