Can We Make a Nissan VQ Engine Sound Good?? Rescuing our $1500 G35 Drift Boat 

I grew up with NFS Underground 2, and every time I hear a VQ I think of the awesome first drive in Rachel's 350Z from the airport to the first garage. I will always love that sound!

I feel like half of Dan's job is fixing what Brad does.

It's so hard to listen to these guys talk shit about the sound of the VQ. Besides the 2JZ and the RB, the VQ is one of the coolest sounding engines.

I daily a Maxima, the fwd equivalent of this car, and I appreciate the VQ love. These are great engines with a bunch of power and torque! Viva la VQ!!

I absolutely LOVE the VQ35 sound. I've owned everything from a cammed G8 GT to an R33 Skyline and the VQ35 has a special place in my heart. I can't wait to pick one up as a fun project car.

I love the way the VQ's sound... 350Z's and G35 sound sweet to me. Edit add: Ahh 4:10 he agrees they do sound good stock alright.

Straight piped they sound bad. They can be really raspy when you go aftermarket. I didn't know people hated the sound of a VQ

Trying different mufflers and resonators on the end of the pipe was excellent. Re-doing the exhaust with the larger resonator up front and the smaller at the back was brilliant! Exhaust gases will condense by the time it gets to the smaller one. Sounds great! I have two VQ Infiniti cars.

Use motor oil for power steering fluid..works good and doesn't leak as much since it's thicker.

If you spray WD down the power seat buttons it will fix it. They get stuck all the time. I had a can in the trunk of my G35 sedan for that reason alone.

Put an Injen Exhaust on the G35 Weld up the trunk lid and just get head and tail lights from eBay.

Dan you're older than me, I'm 28 and the second place I check to pop a trunk is the glove box...you should know this. Almost every old car(2000 and older) that's where it is, buicks, caddys, Mercurys...geos...prolly way more.

VQ is a dope motor 👌 I love hearing a Z blast by on the highway! Even the stock ones have a decent tone. (Of course some correct piping really unleashes a nasty sound!)

You need an X-pipe or crossover before the 2 to 1 collector, then resonators closer to the rear, no mufflers. took all the rasp out of my gen coupe V6

i remember back in the day the G35/350z with a decent race cat + cat back was the godliest of V6 sounds literally everyone with a VQ-series motor wanted that glorious howl...but yeah i guess too many people cutting out resonators and putting on whatever fart can and momo speed tip was on sale at their local import shop really mucked it up; Stillen or Catman Stainless cat Backs or a decent Megan Racing muffler just to give it some throat and volume without the rasp was all that was needed. headers made these engines freakin SING!

Yes that switch going up but not down... Just keep fiddling with it, I think if you max it to the top it'll go back down try moving it forward and backward and it should adjust

I don’t get why people think this engine sounds bad. It sounds good it’s just different than a typical 2j or v8 sound

With raspiness like that, usually the issue is that the engine note is resonating with the exhaust's resonant frequency. So if you introduce something to spoil that resonance like a baffle or neck down at the exit, or just go to an entirely different exhaust diameter all together.

Swap the wires on the seat switch so you can move it back and put on quick disconnects on it so you can switch them back and forth

I put a coupe stock mid pipe on my sedan and it sounded so much better. For some reason the sedans mid pipe with resonator is over 50 pounds, the resonator is HUGE. The stock coupe mid pipe and resonator are literally a quarter of the weight.

Y'all should build this to be funnest mom-drift-sedan ever. Sound quiet, quality wheel tire setup for daily driving, little engine clean up/reliability, respray to something close to factory silver, light upgrades, lowkey wing (maybe duckbill) and Hert's favorite... A/C.

Glad to see you guys finally discovered the G35. These cars are great, in all respects. Personal opinions vary, but I think the 03-04 G35 coupe is one of the best looking sports cars of the last few decades. WAY better than the 350Z, though it is a touch longer and heavier than the 350. These cars are easy to modify (now) and have a big following. It wasn't so easy 10 years ago when a family member was building one out. Back then the big problem was piggy-backing a computer so the car wouldn't throw codes constantly, once the mods were done. That car made close to 1000 hp after the second motor job, and they never got to do an e85 tune. It had the whole motor built though, everything was changed but the block and sleeves. OK, I will admit it, these engines don't sound that great. There is a rasp to them that most people do not like, and it is nearly impossible to get rid of it. Even the 1000 hp motor with 2 turbos had a rasp. He ended up with a 3" ceramic coated single pipe from the "y" at the 2 turbos , all the way back to the stock, giant "muffler-resonator" that sat under the trunk. The muffler had been opened up and gutted, I am not sure if the kept or replaced any of the baffles, but I think not. It was then rewelded closed and coated, so it looked like nothing had been done. I think the best thing you could do is an intercooled single turbo and a haltec, with a couple resonators to taste. Without modding the engine you will gain a bunch of power and clean up the exhaust sound. As I said the stock computer is finicky. Be careful removing the stock intake, as I seem to recall the computer was extremely sensitive to the position of the MAP sensor. If its in the wrong the place, the car won't run for shit. If you want to see what a VQ is capable of, look up Sound Performance outside Chicago, they built my relatives G. you need hemholtz style resonator pipes on the VQ. basically a section of pipe coming off the exhaust but its capped off
