So many people say “we shouldn’t adapt theatre shows to movies, they never work” that’s not true the problem is the directors they hire. The director of dear Evan Hansen movie knew nothing about musicals. While Lin breathes theatre and understand what makes theatre magical. And translated it in such a magical way! What we expect while watching a theatre show he capture that and totally puts it in this film. So yeah more movie adaptations should hire theatre people

I think it’s harder to make a good movie musical than a good stage musical for reasons that Lindsay Ellis has explained in detail, but when a movie musical works, it’s life changing.

Oh also, Lin said that Stephen Sondheim didn't like the voicemail that they originally recorded at the end of the film, so he asked Lin if he could record a different version himself, and he did! So the voicemail is Sondheim's actual words, which is pretty cool;)

I wanted to mention how incredible that moment in "Sunday" with Daphne Rubin-Vega, Adam Pascal, and Wilson Jermaine Heredia was. Just knowing that they had such a history with the real life Jonathan being in the Rent OBC and were now paying homage to him so many years later made me tear up!!

Also Renée Elise Goldberry of course(who sits next to Phillipa Soo in the diner, of course), who herself, before Hamilton, also played Mimi(the role Daphne originated) during the later years of Rent’s Broadway run and is thus featured in the 2008 pro shot of the Broadway production’s last performance!

So nice to hear the point of view of someone who already had a connection with Jonathan. I didn't know anything about his story or work besides RENT and was blown away by the creativity of Tick, Tick... Boom. The fact that when you look at the bigger picture you realise it's essentially a story about failure until you think back at it and notice all the small glories within it (like his persistence in his ideas and love for the people around him) that lead him to success later on is storytelling at its finest!

Actually Amy, Stephen Sondheim made a voice cameo in the film. When Jon gets the phone call from Stephen, saying he enjoyed the workshop of Superbia and is looking forward to what Jon will do next, that's IRL Stephen Sondheim's voice.

Sondheim did have a cameo in the movie!! In the end when the character of Sondheim leaves a message on jonathan's answering machine, it's actually his voice not Bradley's! Lin has said on interviews that Sondheim watched that scene and felt like the message was a bit cliché and not like something that he would actually say, so he did a little rewrite and recorded it himself.

the way that this movie musical in particular was filmed and directed, having breaks from time to time in front of an audience in the exact way Larson performed his own pieces, tick tick boom in particular, makes it have that theatrical edge that completely changed the film into a musical on a screen. one of the best ive seen.

Just a couple thoughts: - 30 is big. Everybody questions their choices and decisions to that point but then the day after hits and you realize life didn’t blow up or anything. - I felt like not only was it a love letter to NYC (and Broadway) but also a response by all the Broadway stars to just show the sheer respect they had for Larson. It’s a collection of letters and it was pretty amazing to watch. One will never see that many Bway powerhouses in one movie ever again. Not just Sunday but also in the marketing meeting and such. And the rumor of Bernadette seeking permission from Sondheim to partake in the Sunday scene because of her respect for the original material she helped originate is just super thoughtful and shows how much she respects Sondheim and Larson. -Larson persevering and taking Broadway off the fairly dull path it had been on for the previous 20 years and turned towards a new path which opened up a lot of various different types of musicals and by extension, gave a wider creative voice to many who would never be a good fit for things like Phantom, Les Mis, Evita, etc… even the shows up for a Tony the year Rent won were kind of bleh. Good shows but sorta the same thing everybody’s seen a million times to then. Looking back, Rent may not be everybody’s cup of tea but, nobody can deny just how much of an impact it had even to this day. - I read some review saying LMM was too close to the material to be able to direct it and gotta say, I 100% disagree. As you said, he’s a theater kid. He’s not going to to haphazardly throw something together with seriously questionable decisions like CATS, DEH, etc… hell, even Spielberg’s WSS isn’t having a good time it’s opening weekend and last I saw had a looong ways to even break even. I think there should be more directors who are musical theater brats and know what they want. Or just let LMM direct every movie musical since it feels like only his are turning out well done.

I turned 30 this year as well, so weird that this got this new recording of 30/90 and as well turning 30 by Bo Burnham (who was born in 1990!), this year, the year we turn 30. I've never been a fan of Rent. It suffers from some of the uncanny cringe that happens sometimes when a work about hip young adults is supposedly set in the current day. The ratio of good songs is a bit lower than ideal as well. It's more important than it is great. That said, I LOVE this film version of Tick Tick...Boom! Miranda clearly understands the material and the era it is set in on such a personal level. I never lived in New York City, but as someone who was 20 in 1990 I can tell you the period work here is astonishingly spot on. I feel like I could step 32 years back in time and be completely comfortable in seconds.

I read in a Vanity Fair article that Sondheim said to Lin. ‘I have one note, which is the final voicemail message to Jon-that line, ‘I think you’re going to have a very bright future,’ sounds very cliché. I don’t think I would ever really say that to another artist. Can I rewrite it?’”. It's Sondheim's voice in that final message. Also in the article Lin was asked about his cameo..."Well, that was last minute. I only jumped in because the person I had in that role backed out because of COVID. And I was already quarantined, so I was like, let me play it. We got to keep moving."

So blessed to have seen many of them on Broadway in their prime from Bebe in Chicago to Andre in Hadestown. Only Lin could pull that off. Well done by all involved and I can't say enough about Andrew's performances. Fun fact: his dad was a swim coach or something in that field so the pool scene was right up Andrew's alley. Love your observation about Lynn offering movie visibility to Broadway Stars. That being said, you need to hear the entire score of Sunday in the Park with George: Finishing the Hat, Move on and Children and Art. And finally Sondheim did appear in the movie. It is Sondheim's voice in the phone recording.And it was new content. Sondheim objected to the script that had been recorded and they redid it and Sondheim recorded it and it is the audio in the movie. .

I'd never seen or listened to Tick Tick Boom before watching the film, but I was part of my school's production of Rent so I was somewhat familiar with Larson's life and work. Seeing this film was just spectacular, Andrew was indeed perfect, and I loved the interpolation of the stage performance with the events he is singing/talking about. I loved the Rent easter eggs (him playing the intro to One Song Glory as he's trying to compose the Superbia girl's song, the OBC cameos in Sunday, the "SPEEEEAK" on the answering machine, so many more that I probably overlooked). While I'm not Lin's biggest fan, I appreciate that he directed it as opposed to a Hollywood director who doesn't have that firsthand struggling Broadway artist perspective, and it was nice to see familiar faces from when I was into Hamilton (OBC)!

I haven't gotten to see it yet. I am a HUGE Bernadette Peters fan (will never let go of my grudge that she wasn't in the film of Into the Woods) so when you said she's in this 😁😱!!!! I was going to watch anyway but now I'm making a point to watch it tonight

I watched this a few weeks ago and was blown away! Going in all I knew was that it was Jonathan Larson show and knew of (more-so recognized) two songs: Come to Your Senses and Therapy, but I really had no idea what it was about. So when I watched it, this show hit me hard. I turned 30 this year too and as a performer myself, I've definitely had all of the feelings that are addressed in this musical. But my god, I was not prepared. Andrew did a beautiful job playing Jonathan! I mean, if he doesn't win awards I will be livid! And I agree, I can't really imagine anyone, but Lin directing this knowing the history he has with it. It was a beautiful love letter to Jonathan. You can see how much heart and soul he poured in to this and I'm so glad this was my exposure to it! I've been wanting to watch it again, but every time I go to watch it, something stops me and I haven't been able to even though I really want to. It's definitely effected me in a way that I wasn't expecting and that's what I just really love about theatre. It's truly powerful when a piece of art can do that; especially through music the way this did! Also, special shout out to Alexandra Shipp and Vanessa Hudgens. I'm so obsessed with their version of Come to Your Senses!

I saw it last week and I am 100% obsessed. Been listening to the soundtrack on repeat for days. Andrew Garfield is one of the greatest, most passionate actors of our generation and we truly do not deserve him.

I loved Tick... Tick... Boom! Andrew Garfleids acting was amazing! Streep level amazing. Lin- Manuel Marada's direction was a work of art. How he managed to tranlate the stage play to film like he did and the dream seqeans were not over the top. The Cinematagraphy is 10 out of 10. Merada should've directed. I hope this movie wins a bunch of awards because it deserves them all!!

Stephen Sondheim actually does make a cameo-- not a visual one, but an audio one. The voicemail that Stephen leaves Jonathan is actually Sondheim.

I was not interested in seeing the movie but based on your review I will definitely check it out. I am not a big Rent fan but I agree with your views on how influential it was. It always felt like it was written by a straight male writer every time I saw it and I did not enjoy how some of the stories played out. Growing up I was a huge Sondheim fan and ended up going to performing arts college in New York. I am glad that Sondheim has such a presence in this movie and that it celebrates both of their lives.

I do wonder, if Larson had had the chance to work on the material more, some of those issues with Rent would have been ironed out? Like, if you look at the difference between certain shows in their early versions versus the version that opens on Broadway, imagine what more he could have done with the material?
@marcellakilgarriff
@marcellakilgarriff 2 года назад
@@kateorgera5907 I definitely think so. I heard someone (I can't remember who unfortunately) in an interview say that if Jonathan was alive he would still be rewriting Rent. The show was only going to previews when he died so it's likely that some of the flaws would have been fixed before it made it to Broadway if had the chance.

I'm 29 and turn 30 in January and yeah this film made me like question so much. Still wish Raul was in it for a cameo. It was a great film. Hope Andrew gets all the nominations. Defs fave movie musical of the year. During the promo all anyone would wanna ask Andrew is are you in Spider-Man like cmon. I'm glad that some like James Corden didn't ask about it and just talked about the film & all that.

I just did not like this movie. I thought the direction and the way some of the musical numbers translated to screen was really pretty good but I just hated the story. I think trying to draw a comparison between 'running out of time' because you're about to turn 30 (I did this a few years ago btw and it was fine, Jonathan Larson needed to get a grip on himself) and running out of time because you've been diagnosed with HIV in the 80s when it was almost certainly a death sentence is borderline offensive. I also have an issue with stories that are critical of 'selling out' like this one. So many people would kill for a creative job in advertising like the one his friend has in this movie, but it's portrayed as not only easy and dumb, but also somehow morally reprehensible to want a good job and not to live in poverty - when for a lot of ppl that's not even a choice! If anything I think the movie SHOULD have focused more on the fact that Larson died before Rent got successful because it was the only way I could have any sympathy for the character.
