I still feel like making a musical about a woman whose death is still pretty raw (especially considering the vast majority of her family, including her sons, are still alive) is just an odd thing to do. It feels tone deaf. Maybe that's a me thing, idk, but it just puts a bad taste in my mouth.
@brees3

I completely agree, especially considering this wasn't an American tragedy. Come From Away felt more appropriate as it was about 9/11 and was being performed in NYC. 9/11 was our tragedy. But monopolizing a fairly recent tragedy (like you said, still surviving children) from a different country and performing it in America with seemingly little tact is.... well, it's actually a very American thing to do so I can't say I'm surprised. I'm trying to picture the West End producing a campy musical about the Kennedy assassination or something equivalent and uh... yeah I can't say I'd feel good about that.

yeah, there’d probably be uproar if someone made a musical about amy winehouse for example, it should be the same for princess diana. tbh a musical with amy winehouse songs would be cool, but it would have to be a mamma mia type thing, making a musical about her life would be super insensitive

Yeah I agree, especially considering her children, like imagine seeing a musical made about your mother who was killed in an awful tragedy and had a lot of struggles in her life and see it being glamourised by people who just want to make money off of it

I think it could have been good if the creators went fully, 100% into the campiness that it ended up being instead of trying to create some semblance of seriousness. And if they advertised the show as campy instead of as a serious biopic.

I feel like the show would be far less embarrassing if they signaled they understood how campy the show is, but also the most effective camp is both unintentional and uncomfortable to view simultaneously. It's hard to watch this, I never forgot for a moment that I was watching an awkward and shameless contrivance, but I also absolutely was riveted while watching it. I think efforts to make the show more self aware of its failings are a reasonable suggestion - absolutely - while also possibly endangering the thing that makes it must watch viewing... it's magnetic un-self-aware trashiness. I don't know.

It’s interesting because in the Netherlands there’s currently also a musical about Diana, but it’s a completely different production called Diana and Sons! I saw it because I got free tickets lol, it definitely took a more serious route where Diana was played as a spirit who guided her sons in the now with the whole Meghan situation. It was pretty interesting, but Dutch acting is always very over the top so it wasn’t my favorite 😬 there was a hilarious line though where Diana said to William that Harry has always had to be in his shadow to which William replied: yes and I’ve been in the scorching sun this whole time, I’m not his fricking parasol 😂😂

I was the most disappointed at Diana's confrontation with Camilla. The thing is that that was an actually emotional moment. When Diana arrived everyone was waiting for a big fight, for the two women to rip each others weaves out and sass each other off fighting for a man. Diana surprised them by having a private conversation with Camilla in which they honestly expressed their feelings for the first time in years. They confided their jealousies in one another. Diana's message was not: "hoe, gimme back my man" it was "I'm not an idiot, I know what's going on. Be honest with me and stop treating me like a fool.". And what does this show do? Make Camilla and Diana verbally assault one another in a boxing ring as a crowd cheers. In contrast I thought that the Aids patients scene was executed pretty well. I was so nervous as to how they would butcher it (what would they do next? Have deathly sick aids patients perform RuPaul's drag race?) but it was a sweet moment, one of the few the musical has.

I just hope Diana hasn't fucked up proshots for the rest of us... Like if this show being terrible means people don't want to go see it live and producers of other shows blame the proshot for the poor sales instead of the show being bad and refuse to even try and do their own proshots....

Honestly I think the biggest problem with the show is that it’s trying to tell us it’s something that it’s not. It’s definitely camp and they trying to sell it like it’s Oklahoma. Market it as camp as hell. People would love it! But getting snotty that people think it’s camp is seriously not helping the way it’s been received. They need to go all like The Room with it or something.

UGH THIS SHOW. as a brit i have a very complicated relationship with a lot of the writing. partly just because it was bad (literally all of the lyrics in "this is how your people dance" before the dance break were horrendous), and then partly because of how they wrote her to be a lot more "common" than diana was. then again i did adore her exchange with charles at the start, about how she'd bought him cufflinks ("well, i kept the receipt" genuinely made me laugh). a lot of the lyrics that get called out in news articles have grown on me over time (i really like all the ensemble parts of "the main event", and honestly its the diana/camilla showdown section that kills it for me) (and how else are you gonna express "harry my ginger-haired son"?? its true), but the show definitely falls flat from so many of the lyrics. i remember someone online saying it felt like they never sung any of the lyrics out loud before finalising them and that is SUCH an accurate description, because the emphasis in basically all of the lines falls in weird places and so much of the show just sounds strange to the ear. there are def some good songs though ("i miss you most on sundays" is pretty good, "an officer's wife" is effective at making you sympathise with the queen, dont get me STARTED on barbara cartland), along with the bad ones ("pretty, pretty girl" def grew on me but i hated it at first, "happiness/simply breathe" sounds SO disjointed, and "secrets and lies" desperately needs to be taken out and rewritten). the whole thing about the press hounding her is VERY tonedeaf, you're so right. i was so sure that they'd turn it back on the audience at the end, about how they've enjoyed the show, haven't they? but they sure did not do that. about the way they're depicting the royal family, a lot of people have said it's not fair to charles, camilla, harry and william, etc. and i definitely get that, but i'd still argue that this show makes everyone a lot more sympathetic than most of the other shows about them do. it didn't help that the show is 100% written from an american perspective though, because it absolutely shows in the clear lack of understanding of. anything really. TO SUMMARISE: i love this show, but i know i shouldn't. it's so disconnected from the reality of princess diana and the royals, the writing suffers in most of the key moments (that one conversation between diana and james hewitt after the main event was SO strange), and it's just plain weird. but i still got chills every time someone sang "you do your duty for your country and your honour", and that counts for something, right?

From an over the top camp view... It could have a cult following. However, the more I listened to the cast recording the more I realized just how bad the songs were. I was like... "Pretty, Pretty Girl" is a good song and then I actually read the title of the song and what was being said within it... Which was literally the "Rainbow High" number for her... It just seems like they wanted to throw as many English references out there as possible. When the queen was like... "If I wanted this drama I would have watched Corrie!" I'm like... 99% of American's (me being in the one percent) have a clue what Coronation Street is. The Dangerous Liaisons/ Cruel Intentions elements of Charles and Camilla were hilarious but for all the wrong reasons. The fact that Diana was made out to think she was going to be a Disney Princess... That's an American point of a view on real life royalty in a nutshell. I think we all know why they recorded it. They got the money from the Netflix deal so when it closes after Tony considerations it will potentially live on for regional productions. Doubtful this will ever play in England, Canada, or Australia in professional Broadway/ West End style open runs.

@@QuikVidGuy I don't know for sure but I don't even think that would have been part of the vernacular of the time. Again, it is definitely made for modern American audiences. I'm trying to think of something that the English to fantasize about American's in the same way. Potentially Jackie Kennedy or if we really wanted to go for a tabloid element... Monica Lewinsky. BUT again American's are the ones who view Royalty through the lens of Disney's versions of Cinderella or The Little Mermaid which ironically neither of those tales are as innocent and pure in their original forms. As Amy says... It's not as if Charles locked eyes with Diana across the street. She was a decedent of the Howard/ Boleyn lineage and grew up in with the best of the best. Making her out to be a Kindergarten teacher... Yeah, while she waited for a man with some form of a title to swoon in. Which is extremely common within that community even within an American sense.

One more thing, I do really like the last song, which basically becomes her “I want” song just before they kill her off. But I was hearing it as “Alight the world,” kind of set fire to the world, create a spark for change, something beyond herself. I was disappointed when I found out it was “I’ll light the world.” Which seems much more insular and narcissistic and about herself. And that rhyming of “girl” and “aswirl,” who could have seen that coming???

The first act was ok. The second act was just stupid petty drama. I wish they had kept it as a satire, and not tried to make it deep. I appreciate that they tried to make all the characters multi faceted, but they couldn't do a single one of them justice and so many story lines were brushed over for other ones. One example is that she literally tried to kill herself and then they never mentioned it again. I also never saw anything between her and Hewitt because they rushed through their story line so fast, and I sort of hated Diana in the second act because there seemed to be no motivation behind all the things she did. The actors were incredible though, the amount of control Jeanna had in her voice during simply breathe blew me away. It's not easy to sound so out of control and do it well. The quick changes were amazing as well, but overall, the show was not that great and it makes me mad that this gets broadway and a proshot when so many amazing shows don't.

I remember people talking about her as the "people's princess" and commenting on her fashion all the time. I remember the stir and sensationalism around her divorce and all the news frenzy around her all the time. The AIDS scene is what I remember about HIV/AIDS/homosexuality in the 90's. I don't love the musical, but I also can't imagine a musical about Diana being any different.

I have the idea (remember it is my idea if it does not seem right to you) that maybe the musical could have been better with the support of Elton Jhon for 3 reasons: 1. He had a very intimate friendship with her and was also very close with her at the end of his life. 2. He has extensive experience writing and composing musicals. 3. He has the experience of making a biopic musical, because he just did his own But this is a very personal opinion.

All I’m gonna say is after watching this I had to go watch the recording of 2002’ Elisabeth here on RU-vid with Pia Douwes. Even with three pixels I saw more emotions than with this high def pro shot. Elisabeth shows a very similar story a woman in royalty imprisoned and abused by them and the media. But it’s appropriately dark and gothic. It connects her story to bigger issues like the downfall of monarchy in the wings of WWI

I get and agree with the idea of why a Diana musical was made and that someone who goes to New York as a tourist would go see it. But why would you go to the Diana musical when Hadestown is right across the street! 😅🤣

so. i'm from the country where andrew lloyd webber's "starlight express" has been running for 30 years, right next to the tina (turner) musical and we will rock you, the rock opera no one ever cared about. where the only options for a musical-night out are big bombastic hollow and embarrassingly cheesy. and i promise you, diana will not only come here but also be just ... so popular.

I don't think a pro-shot would have affected ticket sales if it were a good show. Like I don't think the Hamilton pro-shot really significantly affects Hamilton ticket sales--they're still making bank. But it probably will because now everyone knows it sucks lmao. I would have considered seeing it before but now that I've seen how bad it is I'm never wasting my money.

okay quick nerdy show rant HAHAH: to be completely honest, i freaking loved it; although i’m glad i watched your review so i can diversify my opinion. i feel like i was obsessed at first because i was astonished at the INCREDIBLE casting, costume changes, quick scene-changes, and i’m also not british so i don’t know the exact history & timeline like many of you do. i can totally agree on the similar sounding songs, as it kinda does get repetitive especially when this show is filled with 70% music & 30% dialog. also, i really didn’t like how the mental-health scenes were so quickly played out (specifically the scene when diana is in the hospital and charles comes in and he’s talking about how she was repetitively self-harming, that was extremely awkward and just felt like it held no significance later on), as stuff like that is so incredibly heavy, and diana isn’t here today to defend herself/talk about what was really going on in her head. also, not to be too forward, but the depiction of charles in this show is so horrendous & horribly inaccurate. there were hardly any scenes that showed who he truly was to diana in real life, other than that one ‘diana’ song when he was yelling at her, but that scene was short and somewhat forgettable, but i guess it did impact the plot later on. obviously, that wasn’t the actors fault (as he was incredible), just a major writing & directorial mistake. in my opinion, the final scene when diana’s death occurs was played out the best it possibly could. obviously, it’s so touchy for so many people, so i’m glad that it just ended with that last loud “the people who change the world are not the people you think will change the world” (i personally think that really relates to diana a lot), as it was very impacting after her walking away softly singing with the lights behind her (i also feel if they were to try to act out her death it would be so insulting & insensitive, not only to her but her loved ones). overall, i feel that it was a really, really good show and would love to see that energy live, but now in retrospect, my opinion has definitely changed & i’ll probably see it differently when i go to watch it next :))

I think making a campy show out of tragedy a person experienced is just straight up disrespectful. I can only think how heartbreaking it must be to even think about the show as her sons. Imagine how it must have felt to find out about and see what this show did, profiting off of the tragedy, for her sons. No amount of jokes or talented acting/singing/dancing makes this okay for me. This is just using someone’s suffering and glorifying it for profit.

Honestly the show trying to make a little statement about how bad the paparazzi were to Diana is so gross considering the content of the show their making. Like I think you could make a quite serious musical about that concept by having the paparazzi be the characters we follow and rather than diving to far into parts of Diana's life that should have been private you see these people being ruthless for a picture or a piece of this woman. Idk, maybe it's because I grew up in a house that generally avoided stuff like biopics about the royals and documentaries like that but I think the widespread acceptance of airing all the shitty and private parts of a dead woman's life for our amusement is so gross

I so far have watched it four times and the more I watch the better I love it! As a huge follower of Princess Diana, I see the campiness but also moments of sadness that makes you think about how she lived . I loved being able to watch this since I love plays but will never get the opportunity to watch on Broadway. Wish I could purchase a copy. I enjoyed for simple entertainment.

I understand where you are coming from. However, I would be interested to know what your opinion is on this being made now rather than in a time when people who knew Diana are still alive, especially William and Harry? In a way that feels slightly disrespectful, especially with how historically inaccurate it is. It felt kind of like yet another piece of Diana propaganda that continues to put public opinion against Camilla and Charles but hasn't actually done proper research and has missed a lot of information. Sorry, I know that this is long, but I just feel like a lot of people forget that their are still real people who can be affected by these things, unlike say something like Hamilton where everyone who personally knew him has been dead for a very long time.

Evita was made somewhat the same amount of time from Eva Perón's and it seemed to be received well in regards to this (specially considering how Argentina was in a specially bad time politicaly in the 70's). Like, should works of art not be made about the life of public figures, specially one that was in a position where being public and seen and "of the people" was her main role?

It reminded me of this other musical I saw, where stuff like staging, costumes, acting and lighting were all incredible, but the music was mediocre. Only like, one and a half song was actually good, and that’s what I felt watching Diana. The wedding dress quick change was so cool, but it didn’t save the fact that most of the songs were pretty forgettable. That being said, it was still a good time. Netflix has endless reservoirs of cash. My guess is Netflix paid producers enough for a taped version of the show to off set a lot of the cost they spent to mount it on Broadway in the first place. And Netflix knows its users will watch it because of The Crown.

The only thing going for this travesty of a “musical(?!)” are the costumes & the set/staging. The songs are blah & bland & nothing memorable & sounds repetitive. I feel sorry for the actors trying their best to keep it from sinking. (I thought it was another TITANIC musical because it SANK.)

Watched about 30 minutes of Diana on Netflix before cutting it off, but I *did* get to see it on Broadway the day before it closed. My main impressions were "oh no, the lyrics" and "yikes, are we really doing that lady like this" both times, but here are some additional thoughts: - I think this could have worked and that's what disappoints me the most. Specifically, I'm kind of bitter that David and Joe wrote a show with such LEGENDARY camp potential but stopped short of delivering it. Sure, it wasn't a particularly ~good~ show in terms of the book, but if we're being honest, we can all name a few musicals that get to live forever off the strength of one or two iconic numbers. I wish I could advocate for Diana to join their ranks -- it's really not THAT bad -- but the lyrics are too much of a mess. - The performers were fantastic. It was a joy to see them do the absolute best they could with the material they were given -- especially the ensemble. Their next shows are going to be lucky to have each and every one of them. - The Looks(tm) were DOING THEIR JOB, YES MA'AM. Also most of the quick changes caught me by surprise and I wasn't expecting that. As a side note, the whole experience was massively elevated by the fans that showed up for closing weekend. They were easy to spot -- decked out in merch, wearing tiaras and giving standing ovations for every song. There are so many shows I wish I could have seen in person before they closed so I really loved that for them.

I've made this comment elsewhere but Diana is The Room of Broadway musicals. Awkward songs and delivery, camp as all hell, love the set design (David Zinn can do no wrong) and the outfits (William Ivey Long. I can't believe I can link Beetlejuice to this). I also can't believe this was directed by the same guy who did Come From Away (and the Rocky Horror revival (speaking of camp) and the ill-fated Leap of Faith) No lie, I kinda want it to get a cult following but honestly I don't think it will have a long run since it's really out there

I have nothing against using media to criticize media, but I agree if they were going to try to have a take against sensationalism then they shouldn't have used the tone they did. It seemed like they wanted to be taken seriously but then out comes Barbara cartland and James hewitt shirtless on a fake horse. I wish they HAD focused more on the paparazzi negative affects cuz they really only mention it for the song and the beginning, then it's all about charles' infidelity. I think a serious and well done show about Diana's struggles could be brilliant and respectful but this was not it. That being said, I'd love to go see this in person with people who hate/love it just for the good time. For the right price.
