when they go on about green cars, I think they miss the point, this is a green car, refurbished and back on the road, ti will have a much smaller effect on the environment than a Tozla, I noticed that you use a Warrington hammer there, lots of skilled tradesmen use tools from another trade to get a particular result, great work, very very impressive

Enjoying this series. I'm curious if this level of rust is entirely unusual in a car of this era, in the UK? I've seen various YT videos involving rust repair on various European cars (Land Rovers, BMWs, Porsches) and the amount of rust damage is incredible to me. I would expect it from cars that live in the "Rust Belt" of North America, but why do European cars of this vintage rust so badly? Is it a total lack of rust protection from the factory?
@yorkshirecarrestoration
@yorkshirecarrestoration Год назад
this rust is typical on this era of car as we tend to salt the roads a lot in the UK

Doing a customers RS Escort atm - front to back metalwork - and allegedly, we have complete sills & complete rear arch panels coming for it tomorrow...as opposed to the usual craic of me having to make everything from scratch. That sprang to mind as I watched you welding in lovely new shiny repair sections. :-) The sheer luxury.. We'll get spoilt Steve... :-)
@jamesward5721
@jamesward5721 Год назад
Was slightly put-off by the Panel-Monger going "They're a crap fit, J - they're the best on the market but they're still naff... I'm not standing over them going onto an RS properly - they never fit those... We can't get anything better either..." Hmm.. maybe the hope of Posh Shinyness could be short lived once I offer them up... We could be fabricating yet.. :-)
@yorkshirecarrestoration
@yorkshirecarrestoration Год назад
I had the same experience today doing the E24. Pre fabricated sills sections were supplied with the car. Had to reposition two of the bends so they matched the profile of the car, could have prolly made some myself from scratch quicker James. Haha.
@jamesward5721
@jamesward5721 Год назад
@@yorkshirecarrestoration Same with the RS ones it turned out - didn't fit. I had to change them so much I binned off loads & made those sections from sheet. Was less hassle. Arch sections fitted after I explained better to them with a hammer on the anvil. I chucked their lower quarter sections in the bin & used sheet. Making the damn things was easier than trying to baby non-fitting stuff into shape.

BTW - B&Q do 120cm lengths of 1mm 25 * 25mm angle that's got punched holes all along it - it's the handiest stuff I have ever come across for loads of spots where you need an easily welded bit of 90' angle - they also do 2.4m lengths - I'm getting a couple of them next time I'm in - it's ideal for joining floors to sills blah blah - plus 1001 other places where you need a joining seam. Dead handy.

Steve wonderful craftsmanship as ever. Getting the bonnet to it with all those other panels must be very difficult. One question from an amateur. When you put the panels together you remove the factory applied primer is it is not a weld through primer. Should you the not replace this with weld through to prevent rust forming between the panels but I accept you will seal the panel seems with Tiger Seal.
@yorkshirecarrestoration
@yorkshirecarrestoration Год назад
These are structural and sometimes I'm happier with a bare metal weld :) the panels will get sealed with seam sealer :)
