Rob...you made an old man happy watching this. Your persistence is something that is lacking in a lot of young folks these days. You just did not give up when a lot of people would have. So good to see the old 186 fire again. I once owned a 186 HT Premier with the Powerglide transmission. It was completely bulletproof in terms of mechanical strength. It's such a great pity that Holden is dead in Australia. This video proves, without a doubt, that Australian engineers could design and build great engines in this country. It's a pity that the pollies in Canberra let our car industry go toes-up. I congratulate you.
@robsshed
@robsshed Год назад
Hear, hear to everything you said. I can picture a tidy HT prem, 186 auto now. They were a nice car. The first car I saved out of a paddock was a HT Monaro that was being cut up for dirt track speedway. I have fond memories of that experiance, and the model in all body styles. Cheers Rob.

Now that has to be the mother of all will it go videos! Excellent work. Your comment about broken rings in "reactivated" engines got me thinking, I had something similar happen years ago after getting a neglected Hillman running, after a few thousand miles had a broken ring. Interesting. Thanks!
@robsshed

Thanks for the feedback, the old broken ring in these situations is very common. We are now working on the sequel to this video, will it run on six cylinders, and move? Cheers Rob and Deb.

Just for the record ;-) Ford 32-48 Ignition ballast resistors have a positive temperature coefficient; as they get hotter their resistance increases. When they are cold they will give full battery voltage when cranking, typically 4.5V. And when the engine starts the resistor will get hot and give around 4.5V to the coil. If you crank the engine a lot, it will become warm and there will be a loss of voltage, causing the engine not to start. So back then they took a Nickel and shorted the resistor under the dash, that's called "Giving it a Nickel"
@robsshed
@robsshed Год назад
As an Aussie, l have not heard the giving it a nickle term before. Thank you for sharing. 👍 Cheers Rob.

Thank you so much for this video. I learnt so much. I definitely what to see more of this type of video. Next I'd like to see that engine and transmission run. What I'd really like to see is taking an old cheap v8 or i6 1960s or 1970s car/ute and restoring it just enough to make it road worthy. Basically get it back on the road with limited effort/skills.
@robsshed

Great to see the weeds fly back when that stubborn ol' tart fired up !! I guess the odds were against you ,Rob, with 3 outa 6 inlet valves stuck open ,not allowing a compression or effective firing strokes to happen for half the engine ! On the positive side, it shows that the valves guides clearance is close ( not much wear) and the stem seals have kept the guides free from the sludge that is heavy everywhere else in that sorry 186...Now you just gotta buff the paint..happy Fathers Day, Rob.

If and when i find time to start it i will re ring it , thanks to your advice. Cheers and thank you mate !

too true with the top piston rings. i got 12,000 miles on the engine in my hr before it blew all rings and spun all bearing from previous owner running it without the radiator! if it wasnt for the spun rod bearings it would have ran for another 10,000 miles. the joys of an ole red motor...

The 186 was not an original motor for HQ onward. The 202 was introduced then. My brother was a mechanic at the Holden Dealers at Inverell NSW, when the HQ was released. A Google search also says a 173 6 cylinder, and 4.2 and 5 litre V8.
@robsshed
@robsshed Год назад
Bit confused here, yes you are correct, and l don't believe I said a HQ would have a 186. This car is a HG made just before the HQ production comenced, it features a few HQ parts because of this. In a response to another comment I mentioed I drove a HQ ute for many years that had a 186 in it, but it came from the factory with a 202. My Dad (previous owner) put the 186 in it when the original 202 got smokey. Hope this clears it up. Thank you for watching cheers Rob.

Not to detract from your clip, but if that's a '71, I'll eat gorilla shit. Pretty certain that in '68, the HK came out. I had a blue one, with the enormous 161 engine. It was a basic car, wasn't fast, but it was a smooth old thing. I miss it, especially considering what it would be worth today. I had a '65 HD Premier. next model up was the HR, which it looks as though you have. A '71 ought to be an HT, followed by the HG. Then we get onto the HQ, etc. Best explanation of ballast resistors I've ever heard. Fuel, Ignition and air! Should start. Thanks guys, and you have a gem there.

Surface rust will tend to build up thicker on the inside corner of the bore ridge. Just deridge like you would when changing rings. Problem solved.
@robsshed
@robsshed Год назад
I have had them break rings with no detectable ridge in the bores as well. For sure a well worn engine left, carbon deposits and dried up oil can prop the ring to the point of impact on the ridge all makes sense. Thank you for sharing to our youtube community, it is appreciated. Cheers Rob.

It must be a 5/71. Last of the HGs and first of the HQs. Old gunkers left for years,, the bores are all rust and that breaks the rings. Seen it a heap of times. Why I would never rely on an old engine without at least a kero rebuild. Though the waterjackets will be very rusty,, sometimes into the bores. Seen that also,, rebuild and then they split or have a bore weeping. Our Aussie engines seldom ever saw actual coolant,, just tap water
@robsshed
@robsshed Год назад
I have to agree here, this lines up with my experiance exactly. The Premier is tagged 4/71, but the steering box date is somewhere in the last four or five days of the month. Cheers Rob.

would that valve free itself after running a while
@robsshed
@robsshed Год назад
Not with this one, as we found out in part two the valve stem was rusted badly from having had water in the intake manifold. Sometimes a valve that has just stuck from sitting will free with the engine warming up, but often the camshaft will be damaged from the cam hitting the lifter that will be floating. The cam relies on the valve spring to keep the lifter tight against the camshaft. Cheers Rob.

Sadly soon all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime (Bundesabgasbespassungsverbotsverordnung)!!!!!!
