Our Chickens have decided to start sleeping outside of their coop, putting them at high risk of a predator attack. Heres how we plan to stop them.

The best investment I ever made was a predator proof coop and run for my chickens! It's divided in the middle so I can separate my flock when needed and big enough to keep all my chickens in year round. The biggest expense was hardware cloth and other hardware such as locks, hinges, staples, nails and screws. The coop and run itself was made out of scrap lumber and pallets.

It’s best to remove the roosting poles from the run and only keep them inside the coop

All animals have a brain. Not all are going to be quantum physicists but are all capable of learning, however seemingly insignificant. You have done well with them.😊

We had some young chicks that we had to teach to go into the main flock . it takes a few nights, but they did it💕NonnaGrace 🐓

I love to hide and sit to watch mine coop sometimes. I have 2 separate flocks with 2 separate coops and attached runs. I was lucky. They knew where to go. At one time I had one that was being bullied so she'd run to me like a baby. She wouldn't coop with the others until they was asleep. She was my night owl, as I called her lol but the more I let them free range together and have their favorite snacks on occasion they all adjusted. They are so smart.

I had a problem with my chickens going into the coop at night. Finally figured it out. The Coop was darker inside than the light outside when the sun was going down. So. I bought a solar light bulb and put it in the coop. The bulb would charge all day, and when the sun went down the bulb would come on at dusk and burn for an hour until it ran out of juice. So, now the chickens will wait outside at dusk until the bulb comes on and then go straight in. This also gives them the chance to settle down and take their time jockeying for a roosting position. Really releaves the hurry up stress of finding a roost fast. The brighter inside light than outside light really helped them figure things out.

This...I have a nightlight that comes on 30 min prior to sunset and stays on for about an hour. They immediately started going in when they saw the light click on.

what's fascinating is that in Australia, I can leave my chickens outside the coop at night and not really stress to much. I do very rarely just leave them outside or with there door open. I find it interesting that Americans have to worry so much about predators.

We have the same problem...but with all our chickens...none of them want to sleep in their house...it is plenty big...but they won't go in...so we did put windows...and siding in the back...and plastic so the wind won't ...make them cold...and I think when it gets really really cold...they will probably go in...they do go in to lay their eggs...we will see...

I have one that always missed the auto door. Had to extend the time it was open so I could not have to put her to bed every night 😂

I hope you don’t have raccoons. That hoop coop looks like one I was using and I just lost half my flock to raccoons. I got two of the three coons but one got away. I relocated my hens with my old flock in a more secure coop and run. I have not had any raccoons in the three years I’ve had chickens so I was a little overconfident on my hoop coop. Lesson learned the hard way.

What kind of medium dog can I get to watch my chickens, and what kind of dogs do you have? How do you train a dog to not kill your chickens?

Just give them time with them with a leash at first then you just have to hope they don’t eat them🙈
