There are three main ways to adjust contrast: -Contrast wheel : fastest, will loose data and give a distinct look, -Gain + Shadow wheel : favorite method, works for most of the shots, doesn't give much look, -White curve : takes more time but is the best method for shots that need a lot of adjustment and dynamic range, doesn't give any look.

The lines in the waveform I guess they represents bandinng in the footage? Am I right? This is more prominent in 8bit footage and lower colour sampling images, such as 4:2:0, I suppose. Fantastic video though, thanks Alex.
