Can you beat depression with food? with Dr. Drew Ramsey

We’re often told that eating well can prevent diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, but what about the effects of diet on mental health? The correlation is just as strong. What we eat impacts our brains and mental health-food does affect mood. In fact, highly processed foods can lead to a 50 to 100% increased risk for clinical depression and high-glycemic foods pose a significant risk as well. It’s time we stop thinking of the way we eat as relevant to only one piece of our health, it dramatically influences the entire body.
Today’s guest on this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is here to talk about the link between diet and mental health. Dr. Drew Ramsey is not your average psychiatrist. A writer, farmer, and doctor who focuses on the connection between mental health and food, he is passionate about nutritional interventions and creative media to share a different way of thinking about the brain and mood. He is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and in active clinical practice in New York City. He also spends much of his time with his family, growing their own food, on a 127 acre organic farm.

Dr. Hyman is an 11-time New York Times bestselling author, family physician and international leader in the field of Functional Medicine. Olive oil, butter, garlic and onions are all of the ingredients that I grew up in an Italian and Polish household. My parents both lived a great life until 94 years old. I'm thrilled that a doctor starts his process with his patients with 'food is medicine'. Thank you, Dr. Hyman, for another great podcast.

So important. Thank you. There is hope for a very prevalent mental health condition. What a difference it will make when hospitals, prisons, schools and nursing homes decide to use real food as medicine.

Very informative, this would have helped me dig out of a deep hole of depression I was in much quicker. No doctor ever mentioned eating properly would/may help my mental state. Also kinda sad only 66 comments in 2 years? Eat well and reap the benefits folks it is hard to change lifestyle but it can be done. For me it was change or die an early miserable death, thankfully I sensed it.

We just moved Off Grid and I feel like it’s coming “ back home” I grew up in the Mt. Lassen area of Northern Ca. with parents that were the hunter gatherer type. After a few years of elimination type dieting and paying attention to my body, I don’t Not do well with bean, lentils, grains, corn, cow dairy, avocados, white onions, ( possibly garlic) cauliflower, cabbage, coconut and many more. Even if the beans and lentils are soaked overnight and cooked in a pressure cooker, they still give me grief. Eating tons of vegetables and some meat isn’t putting any weight on me. I’m scrawny 112-115 lbs at 5’5 ,and now I have to wear Jr’s clothing. I realize strength training would help a lot, but rarely can muster the energy and when I can, I’m wore out for several days afterward. Poor recovery.

thank you for doing this show. i loved the book that dave ramsey did with kale - i like to read all of this. i have been diagnosed with bipolar since college and gained much weight which seems to be how it goes with these meds- my doctors have never really helped me at all with all the many side effects. putting on two hundred pounds in twenty years should be something that is considered by the doctors. but they don't consider it. and i'm told if i exercise - if i lose weight--- all about my failures. and yes i have failed- but the whole thing doesn't work. i'm glad to have meds for bipolar. and i'm glad to not be in a hospital. but i have alot of health problems. I work in nonprofit. partly because I don't want people to starve- i don't want these things to happen to other people. i do have an addiction to sugar. i do wish i could just change my lifestyle and i'm going to try some of the things you mention here. thank you. i hope i can turn everything around. I've been doing Weight Watchers for a year- and it helps me with accountability. but they don't advocate for Real Food- not really. and its just too confusing. why is weightloss and good food not together. i do need to eat for my brain. I have some ideas from this video. thanks.

Have you tried magnesium supplements? I had the worst sugar cravings but after taking chelated magnesium, Potassium citrate my cravings have disappeared. A jar of icecream can be next to me and I don't feel like eating it

This is such an incredible conversation! Preventive psychiatry! What an amazing term. Do we think that bringing Health Coaches into the doctor practices might help with keeping patients accountable with lifestyle modifications as Dr. Ramsey talks about?

Right at the 17.22 mark they start describing me to a T. Spent many years only getting 0-4 hours of sleep. Just this year I have started getting an average of 6 hours of sleep. It’s been one major cause for being sedentary. Boy am I paying the price! It’s difficult to know the tools for wellness and not have the energy to use them and adds to the depression. Feels like I’m wearing a masks of someone I’m not!

My answer to the question at 30:11 is rare grass fed and finished beef liver. It’s yummy on top of a salad with my homemade Italian dressing, ( olive oil, raw apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, Italian herbs, a little sweetener of choice if desired) amounts are up to your taste, and a couple Tbs of unfortified nutritional yeast sprinkled on the salad ( large serving bowl of salad) Makes a Great breakfast!

Great podcast Dr Hyman, love this info. As a nutritionist I help people attain wellness and I love to recommend Juice Plus which gives people an array of 33 different fruits and vegetables, the colour of the rainbow, plus eating healthy foods and avoiding processed foods. I also love to grow my own greens in my Tower Garden, an aeroponic system that with grow lights I can grow greens in Ottawa all year long. Am sharing this with my friend who is a Psychiatrist

If only I had female hormones. Had a complete hysterectomy at age 27, can’t take synthetic hormones and burned out my adrenal glands over the years. I’ll be 49 in May and would take all my female organs back and deal with the issues naturally. Since age 30 I’ve gone downhill at a faster rate.

Thank you for a good lecture. Just a suggestion, change the camera angle....when you are in close it is good, but when the camera backs off, I feel like I am on a drone looking down on you....because of the high camera angle you both appear to be looking down most of the time.
