This is Berserker slander. Honestly, the worst Berserker has ever done to me is hit something that counterattacks with a wide-spread attack. If you set it up with a Thornlet and a Gaia Hammer, it does pretty good damage. Dragoon gets spears that are either highly situational or just plain weak. Its best weapons for the endgame are either super rare steals or the Holy Lance, which some of the more annoying enemies in the Interdimensional Rift are immune to or absorb. What's more, unlike Knight, Berserker and Dancer that get bonuses to battle power, they decided Dragoon's Jump should get a bonus to... multipliers. Oh and the kicker to all of this is that Dragoon can't use doublegrip with a spear. You know -- the TRADITIONALLY TWO-HANDED WEAPON.
"Let's make a class that specializes in dragon riding and dragon slaying. It'll even wear armor designed to look like a dragon." "That's awesome! Will it be really strong?" "That's the best part! It'll be one of the worst classes in the game!"
I love the Dragoon job visually, but I'm always a tad saddened that their gimmick is barely worthwhile. The only use I found for them was in Final Fantasy 3 3D Remake (might be true for the pixel remaster as well, I don't know yet) where you can jump with 3 Dragoons to guarantee your countering Monk actually gets hit. Since Counter is strong and multiple bosses can get countered several times per turn, it's actually kind of a decent use of the job. Provided they are fast enough.
dragoon is kind of a weird selfish tank. good armor and shields plus the ability to hang out in the back row and jump to avoid all damage, but jump makes everyone else take more damage as a consequence.
I'm looking forward to the Mystic Knight run. Sure they can just dish out basic damage with elemental blades but I seem to recall status enchants have guaranteed accuracy if the enemy isnt immune which might make for some possibly interesting strategy.
Freya's alright. Her best niche is it's possible to get her endgame weapon near the beginning of Disc 3 and crush rest of the game with it. Also probably helps that FF9 mages have the best defense in the game so jumping doesn't really put anyone in danger.
Fun fact, at least in the snes version if the game, the man eater knife is programmed as a spear for jumping, and xdeath is considered human. So you could have made your life a lit easier lol
FF5 is my second favorite Final Fantasy after 6. I don't use Dragoon often as I have other classes I prefer so I was completely blind sided that theirs an anti jump ability lol.
Personally, i wouldnt mind if you used a modded save file where every job starts out unlocked. That way the challenge actually starts much sooner, and could make things more interesting.
In my only playthrough of this game (so far, I wanna replay it someday) that I did in 2022, I never touched Dragoons because I was having a blast with Knights, Samurai, Ninja and Rangers on my physical characters (Bartz and Lenna, the others were dedicated mages), and by the end of the game I was kinda feeling bad that I didn't use Dragoons, but now I see I wasn't missing out on anything interesting, good to know.
Dragoon is meant to be a tank class with a decent physical option, pair it with a more primary damage dealer like a Knight, Samurai, Berserker, hell even a Ninja and have a good method of keeping HP up and the dragoon can output serious consistant damage. This is kind of true to real life since spears are a great balance of defense and offense. Also, whoever drew Melusine and Calofisteri (and Barbariccia from FF4) was putting in a lot of detail for only using one foot to draw them.
All the jobs you listed absolutely trounce Dragoon in terms of damage output. Its not even close. Dragoon just doesnt do what it needs to do in these games.
@@BacklogBuster Oh yeah I never said it had a GOOD physical, this video actually reminded me that spears aren't as strong as I recall on the ps1 days. I just said it was decent since it's not concerned with attacks as much as it is tanking, since you're realistically not intended to set it to all four characters. I like playing around with them, in my current file with one point in strength difference Faris as a Dragoon is beating out Galuf in Samurai in terms of normal physical, and that's with a spear too.
@@sertiana2512 that’s it isn’t it, they’ve never been better than passing grade (not counting the MMOs since they have lots of balance changes over their lifespan so dragoon will naturally do well sometimes)
Answering your statement from the previous video. Dragoon is not the worst class every time it's been used. FF3, FF4, and FF6 called. FF3 is a speed runners best weapon, I've beaten the game in 3ish hours because of it. FF4 has Kain, who can equip a blood spear, making him nigh unkillable. Then we have FF6, which has TWO technical dragoons in Edgar, and Mog. These two are the only ones that can equip spears, and get access to the powerful jump and multi jump extension. Because it's str based, any point about 80 str which is easy to do starts hitting 9999 each hit, upwards to FOUR times. Making this the second strongest attack in the game next to two of Cyans 4 hit Bushido abilities.
it really feels like you were supposed to be able to choose physical or magic to specialize in as dragoon but they forgot and just left them with the nearly completely useless lance skill
Whenever I make a Dragoon class for TTRPGs I give them Lance (physical) and Breath Weapons (magical) so ppl can go either way. Would love to see Final Fantasy take this approach.
I would suggest keeping a stock save for each of the latter crystal jobs, since you're just doing the same thing for each of them anyway. No sense wasting time playing the game from scratch when you can just start from the moment you pick the job. You can even redub older footage, nobody will know.
@@BacklogBuster Worse jobs with which to solo you mean? I love dragoons, but for some reason always find them coming up short when I actually try to have one.
Have you ever considered having multiple save files right before each crystal that way each challenger doesn't require you to play up to the point every time as a freelancer.
@@BacklogBuster you could make a new save file before each crystal and just start from there for each episode. Its all the same till each challenge starts
!Lance is magic base where dragon gets the -12 mag but its usefull on your mages. Dragoons would be better if there where more Spears or polearms like in ff4 or more skills like ff9, ffta.
12:50 I HATED that enemy as a kid. Every time I was in taht room I was in such a hurry to get out of it. Really the only enemy I remember from the game.
I wonder, does this mean the classes that have to equip the Bone Mail instantly mark them as bad classes since it seems most classes can finish bosses quick enough for statuses to not matter when they come up or are Neo Exdeath and you want to rush it down?
Most likely yes. Classes like Blue Mage and Chemist have dirty tricks behind their sleeve, while Black Mage has raw power to steamroll almost anything. Even Knight is a decent class for having Two Handed and good equipment support.
i love watching these. when i got anthology in the late 90s, i enjoyed 5's lack of plot and story compared to 6. and i still cant get into 6. but this game... something about it that just appeals to me more. your content has been awesome w/ this OP next to the "4 job fiesta" where you make due with what you are given and seeing how far you can take it, im humbled by the patience and work that goes into these videos i admire the dedication and the commentary has yet to be annoying or irritating (that is a compliment, it just doesnt come across when texting) me on the other hand? oh, i just completely lose my $hit in ff8 triple triad when the SAME rule fu¢ks me over AGAIN.
@BacklogBuster also you inspired me to finally finish Final Fantasy 5. It was my first in the series, and I played it as a kid. There has been so much nostalgia and I'm now further in the game than I've ever been
