It's been done in Red/Blue, and Platinum, but how about the game with 16 Gyms, and one of the most difficult battles on Pokemon history? Is it even going to be possible?
The Bruno's story arc on this channel is legit stuff! After a difficult journey to become a member of Elite 4 he is humiliated time and time again, defeated by the same trainer who keeps bringing teams of a single unevolved pokemon and just pressing 'A' button to win. Having experienced a mental breakdown, he swears revenge. Jrose wants to defeat Elite 4 without taking any damage? Bruno looks at his Hitmonchan... and teaches him Mach Punch. "Under no circumstances are you allowed to use other moves, understand?" Hitmonchan nods as if he understood the words of his master completely.
Base Bass Forte The funny part is, he likely makes more money than you off of Pokémon videos, the same ones your telling him to get a life on.. Hindsight is 20/20 👀
The madman has gone from removing the mechanic of catching other pokémon and diversifying his team to removing the game mechanic of taking damage whatsoever
Would imagine it's easier than you might think initially, given you can go tactical with evasion lower and poisoning/sleeping moves and also have a Pineco/Forretress explosion/selfdestruct as a second last resort
From a thematic standpoint, I actually kinda love that Clair doesn't have fully-evolved dragons yet. She fancies herself a dragon master, but the fact that her Dragonair hasn't evolved yet reveals her arrogance, and that she has much to learn before she's able to get on the level of her rival/idol Lance, the TRUE Dragon-type master. You're meant to contrast the two.
namelessbag At the beginning he said "There will be a lot of resetting" outright. While it may not be a single, clear run, I wouldn't say the run is invalidated or anything. It's more of a convenience thing since each run clearly lasts hours upon hours.
I feel like his problem was that he didn't want to resets to zero every time he gets hit, but he decided to give himself saves and to string the together the no damage run
@@keenan9826 Look, just because someone did it better, you have to discredit what Jrose did. Smallant's run is impressive, he was a mad man, but Jrose did what the title of the video says, and it was pretty impressive.
How are you defining 'as intended'? Yeah, crits ignoring offensive stat boosts was a mistake in Gen 1, but speed based crits was very deliberate design
To be honest, I’m having a really rough night with restless thoughts and regretting past choices. This upload brought a smile to my face, and it’s gonna make a bad night a little bit more bearable. Thank you :)
If you did something in the past and realize now that you regret it, it means you've grown. Take it as a learning experience rather than something to upset you.🤞Put less time into focusing on negative and more time into enjoying the positive, like these videos. 🤟 Hope all goes well.
"there is no cute story here" proceeds to tell cute story about how little kid him loved how strong an nfe pokemon was and decided to make it his mascot.
Can we all take a minute to appreciate he did this Damageless Run ON SET MODE rather than the default Shift one? No free switches make a huge impact on these. Genius madman, yet again, hat's off to you!
I found it a little odd that he was so adamant that Hitmonlee had to come last in the Bruno fight. It's a good deal more impressive to run in set mode rather than shift, but I spent that whole Bruno part wondering why he didn't just change the setting, or if I had missed him mentioning that mode as a rule for himself. Quite awesome that he managed to run that way though.
Yup. It can go unnoticed because he never mentions it, even though he always does it, like in his recent Bruno run. That added difficulty can really make a difference, especially for these type of runs. It was another key aspect to consider for choosing Haunter. And tbh, I get his logic. It's so nonsensically funny to imagine a Shift scenario: "Oh, my Rhyhorn's down. Hey, kid! I know I'm the Mafia's Boss and we're Battling for the takeover of this big Corporation with hostages and everything, but I just wanted you to know: I'm gonna send my other Rhyhorn now. You OK with that? Wanna switch? No? Your Blastoise is good on it's Surf PP? Ok then! Go rekt him, Rhyhorn, you've got this!". Then he's shocked and wonders how he lost again.
Is it weird that I like the fact that half of the gym leaders in jhoto aren't conventional gym leaders. Like it reveals that they have a life outside of being a gym leader. Whitney cries about losing, and wants to be a gym leader for the status. Morty is studying the legendary dogs. Jasmine is taking care of an ampharos. And Claire is arrogantly following her idol. It shows character growth for secondary characters and I kinda like it.
Ian Mitchell I’d argue there’s a difference between “harder” and “more tedious”. The only difference is he didn’t waste tons of hours on grinding and redoing everything, so I don’t think it’s less difficult. Plus I can’t remember but did SmallAnt use items?
The one thing i always thought was odd about the second gen was giving the zubat line a freindship evolution. Given how its one of a few pokemon that can have supersonic, confuse ray, and bite at the same time its a fairly bold idea to think it would ever be loved by anyone.
@@Shenaldrac not at all. Lol. Confuse ray is fine. 100% hit rate to give a 50-33% confusion proc (depends on gen). Supersonic is hot garbage. 55% hit rate to give a 50-33% confusion proc. Confusion proc is equivalent to afflicted pokemon doing a 40 base attack move that ignores type on themselves. It lasts 1-4 turns. Bite (aside from gen 1) is a 100% hit rate 60 power move that has a 30% flinch chance. Zubat and golbat have garbage attack stats, so even at best with bite and confusion status afflicted, the enemy pokemon still has anywhere from a 35-47% chance of attacking anyways and that pokemon more than likely will have a good chance of ko'ing zubat/golbat in those 2-3 turns because of how low their base hp and defenses are. In other words, you kinda have to get lucky to make the zubat line work with those moves.
@@joeldykman7591 just a little extra fucked up stuff, bite is dark type and therefore uses the special stat of Zubat and Golbat, making it just slightly even worse than you describe
That is genuinely the point. They gave the most despised and annoying pokemon that irritates the snot out of you but can't do slag if you catch it for yourself, an evolution that only works for people who love all over the poor miserable friendless annoying thing.
Hey man just wanted to say I’ve been loving the upload consistency, I look forward to your videos every week, it’s the best Pokémon content I’ve seen on RU-vid in aaaaaaages, please please keep it up!
29:10 - I also noticed that the difficulty dramatically decreased as well. This is one reason why I liked a few romhacks that fixed this. In one, a Fire Red ROM Hack (titled Ultra Violet), you could catch all the pokemon in the game, in a single playthrough. In addition, the Kanto gym levels ALSO had a noticeable increase in not only their levels but pokemon as well.
There's a Crystal romhack called like Crystal Clear or something that lets you free roam the world and raised gym leader mon levels based on your badge count. That last part really should be a staple in pokemon games where you get some free-roaming
Finally, we see the mascot make its grand debut You've became one of my favorite RU-vidrs easily and I'm glad you've been so frequent in uploads. Stay safe frens
I think a stack of dragonairs is much more logical than Dragonites that somehow evolved 20 levels early. Kingdra is much more of a challenge at that point anyway with it's one weakness
@@timmyjimmy3647 I mean if Lance can have a level 40 dragonite in the rocket hideout, why can't Clair? She is "the best dragon master in the world" according to her
Fun fact, my favourite Pokemon is Alakazam, and there is a cute origin story. As a young child, I had a lot of social issues, as in, I sucked at talking to people. When I did, all I could really talk about was the video games I played, like Pokemon. As a child, I always saw Alakazam as that one super powerful psychic Pokemon. As a kid growing up with FRLG and the anime, I saw Alakazam as this powerful pseudo Mewtwo. I never got one, though, as I never had friends to trade with, or two systems and two games. Though, Freshman year rolled around, and I finally got Diamond and Pearl with a friend, and I raised up an Abra into Alakazam. It happened to be a modest Alakazam, and it carried my whole team. To this day, Alakazam represents the power of friendship to me. I always found it neat that you liked Kadabra, which is, of course, a very respectable Pokemon in its own right.
Regarding the seemingly random elite four switch ins: I believe the AI checks for a pokemon with super effective moves against your current pokemon and if none/all have one the switch in is random. So in the case of wil and haunter all of his pokemon had psychic so it would be random. A similar reason for the bruno layout with your kadabra.
Is that why the Hitmonchan always uses its Mach Punch? Because it knows its probably going to get one shot so "Oh well might as well get in a little damage before I faint"
In the pokemon menu if you select “MOVE” you can see the base power of the moves (and rearrange them if you want) it doesn’t tell you the hit rate though
@@chibiraptor He said that you can't check the base of power of moves until Gen 3 and that is definitely not correct. Unless he only meant that for Hidden Power, but then it is worded a bit confusing.
@@uselessDM He pretty clearly meant just hidden power. It's only confusing wording if you're a pedant or think that the guy that uploads pokemon challenge runs is dumb.
I’m glad you caught a ghastly!! I replay a full version of classic Silver on my 3ds menu, and I always make Haunter my ‘main’, higher level than the team. And Furret is my best #2. Why I love silver so much is because I can get my two favorites very early in the game, every playthrough. ❤️ love your videos! 👍🏻👍🏻
@@ryapowa my first game in the series was gold and I caught the legendary beasts without mean look or sleep powder u can imagine how long that toke me and that would be challenging
@@WolfPred in gen 1-3, you get a boost to stats or attacks from badges. In Gen 1, every time your stats are modified (you use a buff or receive a debuff) those badge boosts are applied _again._
@@johnapple6646 from bulbapedia: 'Stat boost In Generations I-III, some Badges boost a certain stat or stats of the player's Pokémon. This boost is applied only in internal battles, not link battles. In Generations I and II, the stat or stats are increased by 12.5%; in Generation III, the stat or stats are increased by 10%. This boost does not exist from Generation IV onward.'
@8balln8 killingu65 "because it does kill bulky things easily like Umbreon, Snorlax and Misty" LMAO! I know what you were going for but the wording was exquisite. You know Misty, the tomboyish mermaid? Yeah, basically the same as that fat creature that can block entire routes.
16:50 I cant agree more. Heartgold and Soulsilver had sooooooooo much content and mechenics. It really was 4th gen at its peak and I don't think they ever achieved that level ever again. Pokewalker, 16gyms, gym rebattles, safari zone, pokethon, dressup assasories, voltorp flip, tons of catchable legendaries (even without the events), collectable leafs and ribbons, pokemon walks at your side!, tons of pokeballs you could use,... and I am sure I forget things still.
Watching the Blue fight I was thinking how it would have been cool if that in Pokemon Blue the player character sprite was the rival sprite and your rival was the usual player character sprite. It would have been pretty easy to code and it would have also made the Red and Blue games have something very noticeable in-game to distinguish them.
Gen2 Kadabra doesn't need recover. It GETS a damageless run once you got Kadabra. It's just that broken in gen2. And if you have a buddy for trading. Put the game aside. There is a thing called too easy
@@Metalhammer1993 he didnt meant that its wrong to learn recover but he means that its odd seeing a kadabra that doesnt take the opportunity to learn recover.
@@evantanuwidjaja8017 i understood that. And I exactly said why it's not odd in a gen2 game. Kadabra doesn't need it. (Actually with kadabras and Alakazam's shitty defenses I'd never run recover on them) kadabra with the punches and psychic oneshots 3/4 of the game
Just want to say thanks for sharing this. Sure, there's a little more leniency than in gen 1 for early game, but this kind of run is extremely impressive to me. It's not just the video and details, though. You've got a great personality and I don't think I'll ever tire of your content. As long as it's fun for you, keep it up!
Played Red first, but Gold over and over again as a kid. And seriously would use just kadabra the whole run so this has been the most Nostalgic of any of the many videos I've seen that you made
Ok, about the order the e4 sends out pokemon. From what i know they pick pokemon that have super effective moves against your current pokemon. The most extreme example of this is koga. If you kill ariados with typhlosion (or any other fire type) he will always send in forretress cuz it knows spikes, which is a ground type move. (This is just observation and guesswork, so take it with a grain of salt but i more or less confirmed it against other trainers like the kanto gym leaders and red). In fact, whenever i go through e4 multiple times using the same pokemon for the same opposing pokemon, the order is actually really consistent. I think it happens that the order gets shuffeld around a bit if the remaining pokemon are all equally effective against your current pokemon, but that rarely happend to me. Maybe you just got unlucky?
"Heart Gold and Soul Silver are the best-made games, including the recent ones." You *really* didn't need to specify that it was including the recent ones.
13:33 "Unable to check base power until generation 3" is such a common mistake people make. Not many seem to realise that you can check your move sets on Gen 2. Menu > Pokemon > select pokemon > Move. It doesn't move the pokemon, it gives you information on your pokemon's moves. I made this mistake for years!
You wondered about the “random” elite four order. I am no expert, but I can bring my observations. As a kid I often did solo Typhlosion run of the game and the elite four always had the same set of Pokemon order because they saved their grass/weak to fire pokemon to last, starts with best matchup. I did notice a change when a did not use a pokemon following that pattern it changed a little, but I always took that to the ai trying to find same pattern as before, but couldn't so it tries one that might work. I might be wrong, but that has always been what I thought from how I experienced it.
Cool video. Definitely enjoyed watching the challenge run, separate from your other challenge runs and ongoing series. As someone that likes watching these sort of pokemon challenge runs from various poketubers, I think something you could do to improve upon future runs is make it very clear up front what all the rules are. For example, a quick slide at the start saying "If any of my pokemon ever takes damage, I restart from my previous save. I am allowed to save as many times and as often as I like, with the exception being no saving between Elite 4 members. All use of pokemon centers, items in battle, etc are allowed." I think if you added something like that, it would give all the viewers the expectations of the run up front and make it more interesting. Cheers!
Great idea for a video man, I can only imagine the amount of work it took. I left a like and this comment to help the algoritm. I hope you blow up with this! Shoutouts from Argentina!
I've been watching a lot of your one Pokémon challenges and so when you first used bellsprout in battle I got absolute whiplash, like my brain had forgotten it was actually possible for more than one Pokémon to be used in battle
I believe the “standard” way to beat Red’s Snorlax is to use a ghost with Curse, so if you had been able to keep Curse on Haunter, could have used that
I'd love to see you do this the same way as Smallant did it, with webcam, reset counter, timer etc. Not that I don't trust you, but it adds so much more to the video
JRose, I’ve been watching your videos on the fire stick as I go to bed and man, they’re just so entertaining and great. I know you put so much time into these challenges and editing them, the voicing, the script, etc.. all so painful, I’m sure. I’m glad you’re having a lot of success and you’ll continue to rise! The Pokémon games really are that awesome where it’s not annoying whatsoever to see them get played through over a 40 min span many times.. so thank you again. Subscribed!
Great video. I'm pretty sure Smallant used like X Speeds and that kind of thing, so good on you for going only held items in battle. If and when you get back to the solo Kanto challenges, I'd love to see Krabby. It has fantastic attack and really bad special. Of course, all of its physical attacks are Normal. Should make for a neat run.
Awesome vid dude, I feel you on Karen. I just finished a Totodile only run of Silver and that damn Umbreon was a wall until sand attack failed. I completely underestimated just how powerful that thing is.
@Mariano Jar He says "doesn't use fully-evolved pokemon". Not "only fully evolved" or "uses pokemon that aren't fully evolved", those could be interpreted like you said, but how he said it was pretty unambiguous. He either forgot about Kingdra or meant to say "all of her pokemon aren't fully evolved" and misspoke, either way he made a mistake
None of these runs are luck based. So much respect man. You do it this pure way of your own where you hold yourself to this standard of gaming that is to be admired. We all have our own 'head-cannon' in some games we love, melding our own experiences with the game. I truly enjoy your content.
I love these challenges. The amount of effort you put into these that your average human being wouldn’t dare attempt is mind boggling 🤣 ❤️ keep up the great work 🙏🏾
This channel is my new obsession. Not only is your demeanor enjoyable, but you're really honestly about your failures and how you grew bc of them and idk of an any more "anime" theme lmaoo
Around 18:20 you were talking about how odd it was that the final gym leader used pokemon that were not fully evolved. In Red/Blue and FR/LG Giovanni uses a Rhyhorn in the gym battle. His team in Yellow is all fully evolved. In B/W both Drayden and Iris use a Fraxure. So it’s not totally out of character for the games.
This has been stuck in the back of my mind since I saw this video 2 days ago. If someone even just knows what game its from, I can hunt it down, but right now its killing me because I can't pin point it
