Imagine being a legendary trainer who has battled... everyone, has scary strong pokemon and has secluded himself in a cave because like Saitama is depressed no one can challenge him. And then you lose to Misty's sex toy.
Gold & Silver is probably the best generation for metronome, the movepool isn't as shallow and broken as in R/B/Y but it's shallow enough that there are more good options than bad
@@patg148 sure in a vacuum, truth is the games are SO flawed they arent even close. but it definitely is a competitor with imo the best music, incredible polish, and new mechanics.
@@patg148 Ahh yes the games with an atrocious level curve, give the Johto leaders mostly Kanto pokemon, lock most of the new ones until after Lance, and having gym leaders weaker than the champion league are the best. AHAHAHA no.
@@ronnieriosstayshredded7410 I skipped on R/S/E and didn't get back in 'til Platinum, but I won't lie that I thought secret bases seemed like a cute, cozy little addition.
You glossed over how insane STAB return is in gen 2. It's not 102 plus stab. It's 102 plus stab, plus plain badge type boost. Making it a 172 base power move. Unless you are hitting 90 base power super effective moves, or a quad effective move. Return is always better.
That is not taking stats into consideration though, but just pure power. Like when he used HP against Onix. Onix almost has 4 times the Def than Sp Def. Special moves matters at that point.
33:07 Just to let you know, Fire Blast would not thaw you out if you're frozen. The only two moves that self-thaw in Gen 2 are Flame Wheel and Sacred Fire. Outside of those, you have a 1-in-5 chance of defrosting on your own. Game Freak put that in there to prevent freeze from being the virtual death sentence that it was in Gen 1.
@naaat You had NO chance at all of thawing. The one and only way to defrost (without items) is for the opponent to hit you with a Fire-type move that *also* has a chance to burn... so funny enough, Fire Spin would not cause a thaw despite literally wrapping you in flames. If the opponent didn't hit you with a Fire move, your Pokémon was completely and utterly helpless until it was KOed.
I think this run showcases how good being part of the fast level up group is, and how important having a wide move pool is. You almost always had a move that did what you needed, and that's not often the case in your runs. Unofficial Gold/Silver Rankings: 1) Togepi 2) Shuckle 3) Zubat 4) Wobbuffet
@@matissimoj1190 Yes he did. I had forgotten it. Based on the level to where he beat Red, the Magikarp would be above Zubat, but Jrose doesn't provide time for these runs.
Rollout and Return are insanelly broken in Gen 2. I just love how different generations have different exploits that breaks the game. As an 30's person, badge boost glitch will always be my favorite
Omg I loved using metronome in Silver. I love how the madness affects both the opp and Togepi. I always felt bad for the self-destructs... But it was such a fun gamble.
Might just be me but I love how you're recording Gen 2 the colours look really nice without oversaturating the hell out of it like other content creators that I've seen. Reminds me a lot of how I remember playing it as a kid but in HD
The GBA and GBC produce colors differently. So playing a GBC game on the GBA actually does look a little different on the handhelds themselves. Most emulators will default to the GBA colors but some people are nostalgic for the GBC colors. I believe VBA is the only emulator that lets you select a more accurate GBC look. Which is surprising as BGB's goal is emulation accuracy.
I did some calculations yesterday and despite the fact that this is not a red/blue run I wanna tell you about it anyway. Not acknowledging the stat multipliers from the moves used. If a pokemon in generation 1 got 36 badge boosts (6 for attack, defense, special, speed, evasion and accuracy) it could get an attack stat (or any other stat) from 9 all the way up to 624 which I was honestly shocked to see (Edit: I'm bad at typing)
Heya, nice to see some math being done on this! Did you factor in the initial badge boost from just having the badge as well as the normal boost from having the stats actually boosted? I got something in the thousands doing this, so I wanted to see how you did stuff.
Ever since the GS beta came out, Togepi has the most interesting development, first it didn't have an evolution, meaning its base stats could've been between Farfetch'd and Heracross and second, it had an actual moveset: (1) Peck, (8)Withdraw, (15) Mirror Move, (22) Charm, (29) Spike Cannon, (36) Protect, (43) Recover, (50) Skull Bash. Not great, but way better than its final.
@@UltraAryan10 Ironically though Heracross sucks eggs to actually use. Nothing but an unimpressive array of Normal-type moves. Until mid-game Gen 3 anyway.
So, you sweep a Gym with a move that the Gym itself gives you AFTER beating it? I think you are a bit confused, unless you transferred that Togepi to another file.
Really happy to see a GSC run. I inherited a copy of Gold as a kid from an older cousin and I still own it to this day along with my gameboy color. By far my favorite pokemon game ever, so its only natural I should love this one more than I love your other videos.
@@Mattdoc15210 Man thats pretty funny! Too bad im breaking the tradition. Not even my kids are going to touch my gold cartridge.. at least not for awhile.
Honestly? I spend an unhealthy amount of time watching your videos. I've had a pretty rotten last two months and these videos have almost been a tonic, so thank you.
Return on normal types is ridiculously broken in gen 2, it's so fun. I did a Rattatta/Raticate solo run, and towards the end, anything that didn't resist normal, I oneshot with Return, and anything that did resist normal, I killed with Super Fang + Return.
@@thelegacyofgaming2928 it was a while ago, but i think for things like rock pokémon i'd use super fang once or twice and then return until dead. i don't think i killed rock pokémon with one of each.
Once the strategy for red was figured out, it was smooth. And it's impressive to see Bruno actually have something he is effective against. Honestly I don't remember the last time I was this excited during a jrose11 video. It had everything it needed from the commentary to the game play to the quality of the pokemon itself. Think I am going to have to reconsider using it.
2:30 I could write a scenario where Bugsy's team comp could work in a remake scenario- if this was using the "gym leader uses their own TM" situation, and this was a gen with u turn, then it could work. Scyther is fast and hard hitting. Many of us might be tempted to just tank a hit and try to retaliate with a fire or flying move. But bam- the scyther switches to a kakuna that takes the hit for it. Then the kakuna does a poison sting, poisoning your one good typed pokemon, and they weapon you down with stall tactics until the scyther comes back to finish you off.
Right? The amount of effort they put into this game alone is insane. It sucks to think about how much you hear about how game freak dev's are always over worked and spread super thin these days, yet their games feel like they have barely half the love and care that gen 2 had. Hopefully SV changes that
@@AS34N Generation 2 was supposed to be the finalé to the series; that's why the final boss is _You_ from the previous game. Once the GameBoy Advance was developed, Nintendo was instantly "oh we NEED a Pokémon game for this", and made _Creatures Inc._ start again; which, as nice as some of the other games can be, means none of them have as much care & dedication Generation 2 had.
@@haroldhall1517 They used some of the better ones like Silver Gyarados but some of the worse ones like Gold Lugia. Gold in general had worse sprites I think
We've had the great droughts between his bursts of uploads but this really seems promising for the future. He has an editor editing his videos for him, he has a long streak of interesting and diverse challenge runs with of course, his trademarked Gen1 runs. And he doesn't seem burned out at all, his commentary is full of vigor. This is the 2nd golden age of Jrose content and I'm grateful for that.
Love to see another video! I enjoy watching every one you’re putting out! Would love to see a Red/Blue Pinsir run! My favourite gen 1 and some decent stats for hopefully a good run!
Jrose, you are truly one of the greatest content creators of all times. I watch each video a minimum of 2 times and I can't wait to see what all else comes from this channel.
Metronome is my absolute favorite move in all of pokemon just because of how random it can be. If it doesn't already, they need to update it to be able to use moves from every single generation as long as it's not a signature, z-move, or dynamax/gigantamax only move Pure chaos is absolutely amazing, so an updated metronome would be the absolute best move ever
Metronome battles were a thing in gens 6 and 7. Is that not a thing in sword and shield? Nothing like a snorlax using acrobatics somehow or a clefairy using judgment. I think gen 7 is the best because with normalium Z you basically use the Z version of whatever moves it calls
Nah, it absolutely should be able to use signature moves. It's so rare anyways. The others I agree with. It can already copy some exclusive moves as it is.
watching these are crazy for me. not only the memories this shit brings back but how the hell are you still doing these??? the content literally doesnt get old at all
The content never gets old just like how starting over a new Pokemon game game never game never gets old. Every new game is a the start of a new adventure, full of possibilities.
Great vid as always jrose. Really surprised how well Togepi did, especially since I feel like baby Pokémon were designed to be even weaker than normal stage 1 Pokémon!
I remember doing something similar with Aipom in a Gold Nuzlocke (Called Mandy). Gave her Return, Shadow Ball, Cut and Thief. She was surprisingly strong and bulky for a Pokemon that didn’t have a ton of base stats. But she went all the way to the Elite 4 and to Lance. I got into trouble with Dragonite, and thought the best thing was to let Aipom go out in a blaze of glory by taking on the Champion’s ace Pokemon, chipping it down for Typhlosion, Tentacruel or Espeon to get the revenge kill. Hit it with a Return which does lots of damage and it attacks with Outrage…AND SURVIVED!! I was screaming the place down with shock that Aipom took a non-defuffed Dragonite and not only lived, but defeated it too. I have no idea how it happened, and quite frankly I don’t want to know. But Aipom bringing down a pseudo legendary was honestly one of the best moments I’ve had as a Pokemon fan.
I thought about doing this run but I learned it is such a nightmare to grind a metronome run of this so I kinda stopped at ecruteak I did learn about memento being a Gen 2 move that's fun to reset
It seems like there are simply too many mandatory battles. That, combined with Togepi's level-up group is what caused the major 'issues.' Still, it's strange that Togepi was doing so much damage. Like, in your Rattata run, it wasn't doing much at all by the Elite Four. I don't know. It just felt like Togepi was doing too much damage for its stats. Then again, these Pokemon are 1/2 to 2/3s your level and you are 3 shotting them. So, I dunno...
Love the videos jrose. Been watching for ages on ps5 and can never comment but keep it up man. shame you stopped doing the count thing that was hilarious even though you got sick of it 🤣
Since you're banking for winning with 5turn rollout anyway, why not use Safeguard to prevent Sleep for 5 turns and use a Berry or an item to increase your attacking power or accuracy? Since the most dangerous part is Haunter using Rollout 1 and Curse ticking 25%, an ordinary Berry could have very well saved you
He has an odd number of health so no matter what, he gets 5 turns of curse before he dies. A berry heals for 10 hp, which is nowhere near the 21 health he would need to survive a 6th tick of curse.
I started watching Poketubers with you and found many more thanks to you. This video was nuts because yeah togepi but its crazy how make mons I never thought could work, work. I started a Nuzlock because you managed to do one and it didnt seem so bad, so yeah thanks for starting a youtube page.
i have just started a play of that, i am loving it so far, nice to start with Houndour instead of waiting till beyond the halfway point, seriously, what the f**k was with adding NEW pokeomon, into the PREVIOUIS region? they clearly thought it was fine cos HG/SS KEPT IT!
Metronome is just hilarious. It's like during the show Metalocalypse when the band gets some mail. Nathan Explosion is going through the mail and says "Naked lady fan mail. Could be awesome, could be horrible." Metronome really is the same. Could be awesome, could be horrible. But that's part of the fun.
.. I'm shocked for just how well Togepi did, but I guess it makes some sense considering just how versatile it's learnset can be, and partially because of how wonky Johto can be in terms of Levels. Would love to see a redo of this in gen 3 - I feel like Togepi would likely struggle in Emerald a bit more than FR/LG due to Brawly, Norman, Tate/Liza and hell, maybe even some of the E4 like Phoebe.
I wondered why you went for headbutt instead of double edge on poliwrath that one time. My only thought was Dynamic punch is going to ohko you either way lol
GSC always feels like they originally intended the Elite Four to be challenged after having ALL SIXTEEN badges, given the weird experience curve. It would explain a bit about the Kanto gym levels and the difficulty in grinding to be on par with the Elite Four after just Johto.
I was literally actively looking for a good togepi run to watch like two days ago, out of what I found by far most exciting no disrespect to others, please do Togekiss in the future, I wanna see how good Serene Grace could be!?! (If you want anyhow :'> )
The Pokemon randomizer I use allows you to increase the levels of all the trainers by up to 50% (so a level 40 Pokemon becomes level 60). It might be fun to try that on a gsc game and use like Mewtwo or something.
Love this run. The first time I beat the elite 4 on crystal as a kid was because my last pokemon in my party, a level 9 Togepi, managed to get a damaging move with metronome on Lance's last Dragonite while he was recharging his hyperbeam. This was after killing my Feraligatr which had left him with what must have been 1 hp.
