RU-vid User Zallard1 lmao. He also happens to be the former/current mike tyson's punchout speedrun world record holder so that was a funny understatement.
There's a trick to knock Soda Popinski down within the first 7 seconds of the fight. You have to get a star from his hook with a stomach punch, put a left jab into his jaw, and time the star punch just right. Boom, knockdown
I kinda think it might help if you had a more...casual sounding tone for these more casual videos (anything that isn’t an analysis in some way)? Maybe I’m just too used to hearing your voice in more informative videos lol.
I’ve been thinking about that same thing. Naturally, I’m a real fast and energetic talker - but people have been digging the slower cadence lately. That’s completely fine, I think it works better to listen to, especially for the analysis content, but for these challenges and OP-EDs, I would like to work more on talking more emotively. It’s on the top of my 2019 things to work on! Thanks for bringing this up, Nicktendo!
So we couldn't beat Macho Man... but there's one fighter that hasn't been challenged in this run. While I don't expect it to be done in the campaign, can we beat DK without defense?
I haven't even started watching, and from experience, I can already say that it's possible... except for macho man because you can't counter much against him :p (and from what I remember, all TD fighter besides macho man + the secret fighter are doable dodgeless as well) Needless to say that some of them are extremely difficult *cough* TD Popinski *cough*
why not call it Without Defense (or Defensive Options)? because blocking would not be dodging, thus by name alone means you should've been able to block.
I use sideways wiimote til I’m 6 feet under. That’s my optimal strategy for healing and all - probably because I could never find a knuckchuk when I wanted to play in 2009 haha Thanks for checking this one out, SOBD!
I remember when the Game Grumps played this game, Dan completely forgot about ducking, so he had to learn hope to counter any attack that would require a duck to dodge. Just goes to show the strength of a game's mechanics when omitting one of them doesn't render the game unwinnable.
My first series with the Game Grumps and still one of my favorites! It does help it was on one of my favorite games of all time. Never underestimate the Grumps’ ability to cheese a harder way instead of the intended method haha Thanks for checking this one out, MattheJ1!
Hahaha, oh man, I forgot how bad my video quality was back in 2009... when I was still recording with VHS with lossy codecs. Good job on giving this a shot! If Macho is possible, it would require several frame perfect move cancels to remove the spin punches, but I couldn't humanly accomplish this consistently back then. I should give it a shot these days, since I've gotten much, much better at Punch Out games since then.
Also, the old speedrunning community for this game collectively attempted this (thanks for the shoutouts to some of those videos)! If I recall correctly, every single opponent is possible in Title Defense except for TD Soda, and TD Macho. TD Tiger and TD Aran are possible, but will give you a run for your money, and TD Hippo is only possible through a decision win. Donkey Kong is also possible iirc.
Hey! Great to hear from you here - your videos were such a helpful resource here. I’d love to attempt TD in the future, so it’s interesting to hear your take on those fights. Thanks for the information. I really appreciate you checking this one out!
@@skipthetutorial No problem! It's been so long since I thought about this challenge that I almost forgot I uploaded these, haha. I'm going to try revisiting the "impossible" fights and see if anything new can be utilized. The community knows so much more about the game than we did in 2009 that it's probably worth another look.
@@zallard1 Oh man, I remember trying to find strategies for those fights back in the day. As I recall, TD Soda felt almost possible but would have required at least 2 TKO recoveries with the strategy I was using, which is a pretty demoralizing amount of RNG to have to deal with. I also ran into problems because of his tendency to respond with an uppercut after you get up during Phase 3, so that would have required either a perfectly timed punch to cancel the uppercut or wearing headgear to tank it--and that was just what it took to get started on Phase 3! Needless to say, I never was able to pull it off.
@@skipthetutorial anytime! I know you and other challenge runners usually credit Speedrunners who do the research, I just wanted to make sure people check out Zallard1 because he's insanely talented.
Zebo12345 he also beat the nes and the snes at the same time with one controller as well as did motion controls at a gdq and landed frame perfect imputes
I like how in punch out you’re frail and small. You have to play super defensively, baiting and punishing everything you can to carefully get jabs in to build up damage before landing some star attacks. And then in smash bros you just throw out your smash attacks a billion times and super armor through everything.
I would say Mac is still very bait and punish-oriented in Smash Bros. as his smash attacks can be punished easier than most people think, but that's what is cool about Smash Bros.- characters can be played however the player wants to play them, giving the possibility of a more aggressive approach to Mac's neutral game (which requires practically all reads to be perfect and is thus not as simple as armoring through every single attack).
@@magikarpwillsurvive2695 his poor recovery also means he can be punished more. That's what draws me to him the most, that I have to play more defensively and random bursts of aggression. Doesn't hurt that Punch Out is probably my favourite NES game either
@@crinsombone5380 exactly. little mac plays much more similarly to the source material than you might expect. he has a powerful ground game, with fast speed and high damage. however, his air attacks and recovery are pathetic. as a result, you are punished hard for failing, and need to bait and punish the opponent, landing that one winning hit if possible, just like in a punch out game
