Can you beat Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty with only Starcraft 1 units? (The Retro Challenge)

Starcraft is a game that's near and dear to me. Due to recent events, it's unlikely there'll ever be a Starcraft 3, so I decided to revisit it for old times sake.
Disclaimer: I don't own Starcraft or any of the soundtracks listed below. The footage is only for commentary purposes. All rights go to their respective owners (except Ride of the Valkyries cause it's public domain).

I think some mercenaries are fine since for example Devil Dogs are ex-confederate firebats, meaning they were in the first game and the same goes for Spartan Company who are ex-UED. EDIT: OK, having watched the whole video I think they'll get the Selendis treatment too.

Better than the original argument. It wasn't even Tychus's choice that Raynor defied (Raynor himself said that someone's controlling him with a gun to his head). And making Kerrigan the center of the story is inexcusable. Who the hell writes a story that hangs the fans on a promise for over a decade, then don't deliver on the promise...

Though I'll be honest, I think what they did was fine, at least on that point. Zeratul was built in such a way at the end of Brood War that his investigations made him keep Jim from killing her. It made sense, albeit in an unsatisfying way. What to me was inexcusable is that they threw some ~very~ generic BBEG to take her place so that she could have a poorly-executed ascension to godhood, which there were SO many problems for.

@@JKBrown-vv1ywI actually liked the idea of kerrigan becoming a Xel Naga. The main problems are Kerrigan is treated as anything other than a villain in Heart of the Swarm. Amon has no recurring characters working for him. Narud is good but so rare. A group of hybrid commanders would improve things so much.

you can use medivacs just turn off healing and they're normal dropships. Also the goliath targeting system I would say is OKay, since it's basically charon boosters.

If they're called medivacs, they're medivacs. If it's not called charon boosters, it's not charon boosters. I won't use Adrenal Overload in the Heart of the Swarm run for the same reason. I realize now that BCs had Yamato Gun in SC1 and Yamato Cannon in SC2 but uh...it's my run I'll do what I want.

@@Anubis1993KZ I selected upgrades based on if they have the same name. I realize now that I used Yamato Cannons when they were called Yamato guns in SC1 but uhhhh...it's my challenge, I'll do what I want.

Targeting systems increases air range by 3 and ground range by 1. Charon boosters didn’t affect ground attack. And I think playing Mobius Factor without the medivacs is a fun little challenge. If necessary, he probably could get away with using them, but he didn’t need to.

I've seen quite a few challenge runs of Starcraft 2, and I really liked this one. Also, great commentary and writing. The earrape was a bit much (maybe turn down the volume a bit), but it was still funny. I can't wait to see more.

@@PieisDaBest1 but LotV has entire SWATHES of classic units. That could be fun and challenging, since you could not access the unit forge to select certain options (IE, zealots) but select the classic ones (Reaver, Dragoon, ect). And not having access to the Spear, plus doing things manually w/o warp gates? Hard, but not impossible, I think.

@@NoESanity Well, there's ultras and lurkers (so long as you're okay with doing evolution missions). Otherwise, mass muta is pretty much how most of Heart of the Swarm went.

@@PieisDaBest1 LotV is like First map not doable on Hard/Brutal, only classic unit is Zealot for the first 3 maps so refer to GGG's run. 2nd map impossible at all, lol air. 3rd map doable if difficult After that HAND OVER THE NOSTALGIA. I think the only unit tiers you straight up cannot use either unupgraded or with one of the selections are Sentries and Immortals, as none of the variants were in SC1. I guess u cant use the Void Ray tier for a while since arbiters arent unlocked by default.

funish fact. because of the way heroes work in SC1 technically mercenaries are more SC1 friendly than heroes are. since they function as "stronger standard units" which is all heroes were in SC1.

6:00 Command Centers in SC1 couldn't transport SCVs. I don't know if this counts as an ability.

Actually you can beat Breakout Almost without using Tosh. Just need to trigger Jimmy boy to send attack waves and wait for 2-3 hours(can speed up game as GGG did)

I sit here watching this with a grin because: Back in the da when I got my hands on WoL I had an edgy teen phase and hated all the new SC2 content... So I effectivly played the campaign like this each time XD You'd be surprised how effective wraiths are at replacing banshees and how far siege tank/goliath/science vessel really can go XD

Challenge runs aren't exclusive to Giant Grant Games. Davey Gunface has done them, MasterofRoflness has done them. People do them for games other than Starcraft (i.e. Pokemon Nuzlockes). If I really wanted to copy him, I'd rip his footage off and say it's mine. I will concede that he does do it way better than me.

Wow that's a cool run idea. Btw, if Im not mistaken, some "mercenary" units, at least in name, were based on a group in some sort of SC1 demo campaign. I think they had firebats and goliaths or something like that, and were called Prometheus company

Was there any hope StarCraft 3 would happen in the first place? I mean, StarCatft's story is finished, and Blizzard hasn't been the same for ages. StarCraft 2 has almost all you'd need for the StarCraft experience to continue for years. If there was gonna be a SC3, it probably wouldn't be released until some time in the 2030s.

@@unexpected2475 Niadra's fate has been addressed in the comics: she rejected Zagara's rule and broke the peace with the protoss and terrans by killing an Umojan crew and admiral Urun. She is working on infecting an especially powerful psychic who was with the Umojan... Kerrigan v2?

There's a few upgrades that I would also consider fair game that I didn't see you use. The range upgrade on the Goliath, the spider mine damage upgrade, which brings their damage values closer to their SC1 values, but you didn't exactly use them much anyways.

Ey! Those aren't Arclite siege tanks! Cheater, you can only use mercenary siege tank, because those are Starcraft 1 Arclites! Also no BC, because those are a different class than SC1. Hyperion only!

Can't be that hard, right? Marine, Medic, and tanks can already curbstomp any ground force. Having to use Wraith and Battlecruiser for your airforce does sound rough though.

I forgot about the former. I figured marines would be more useful mineral dumps than the latter. However, one of the ideas I have for a future challenge will involve heavy vulture use.

Late to the party, but akt-ual-ly... 😂😂😂 Battlecruisers and siegetanks would be forbidden as well (mostly just due to lore based reasons) Battlecruisers for 2 reasons: The Battlecruisers in SC1/BW are Behemoth class (reason 1) with only a single ATS/ATA laser (reason 2) as opposed to the Minotaur class from (SC2) with the multiple ATS/ATA laser turrets. The siegetank in SC2 is equiped with the Crucio cannon, the siegetank in SC1 is armed with the Arclite cannon. Which makes it a different unit. Nice run, dude!

i did Outbreak after i unlocked Siege Tanks. So i sat my Factory up that one raised platform and had enough room to spawn three of them. I also suicided all the reapers and hellions by sending them out at night XD.

Outbreak has hellions because you need to destroy structures quickly. While yes, firebats are better. Hellions are quicker.

@@PieisDaBest1 So I think the no Marines or Medics was actually worse. No anti-air until vikings or thors. I tried by using cheats to reach the level I was most concerned with: The Dig. The answer was a lot of Shrike bunkers filled with 2 Marauders and a Reaper each.

I pretty sure that ground all in can be clear by just tank medic marine, get like 25tank in middle and ignore nydus(tank kill anything) and mass marine for Kerri

I gave this a try but I didn't make it past 30%. I can't get siege tanks out fast enough, I'm constantly low on vespene, the supply depots on my left are extremely vulnerable whenever I move my line back to the center, not killing nydus worms means that I'm facing a never-ending stream of enemies, which quickly depletes both my army and my economy. And that's all before the 1st Kerrigan arrives to finish me off. Maybe a better player could do it, but alas, I am not that better player.

@@nailigniststarzear6689 Tried that too. Base got blasted at 33%. Were you using any of the sequel upgrades (e.g. Orbital Command, Tech Reactors)? Cause if not, I'm honestly impressed.

Maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't ghosts have been good for All In Air, even if they're not allowed to use Snipe? Or does that make them too expensive for too little burst damage? In any case, great job, not just in the execution but also with the idea of the challenge run, and your choices of what counts and doesn't count as acceptable to be used! Really made for a fun video!

Probably. This was back when I wasn't as skilled at the game. That being said, I'm not sure how effective unupgraded turrets would be against mass broods.

i think the low graphics add to the challenge because graphics during the brood war and starcraft 1 day were not as good as they are today

Nice challenge idea and good narrating but fps and graphic setting is really painful to watch at, I can sure you'll get much more views than this if you change your pc or something

Sadly my potato laptop is the best I can use. My alternate laptop is an even bigger potato. But think of this way: you get to share the pain I experience every time I play Starcraft 2.
