Just need to state that Kooper's Shell Shield DOES WORK without the action command. The only problem is that is breaks with any hit, but if you absolutely need to tank a hit with zero damage then it will be as awesome as it always is.
Ah that’s interesting to know! I wanted to try every move at some point but I never found a turn where it was worth it to sacrifice partner damage for trying Shell Shield lol
Yeah - nailing the action command gives 3 attacks but just not doing everything will take two hits away as you simply hit the edge of the bar automatically
So! Fun fact! Vivian and Flourie are actually both immune to "Earthquake" type attacks like Gloomtails stomp. The game just doesn't consider them to be touching the ground, which makes sense if you think about how they both float off platforms in the overwold instead of falling like everyone else.
I love this video for so many reasons, so I'll just make a list. -Voiceover presentation is phenomenal (quality of the recording, quality of the information presented and the clarity with which he presents it, the pacing keeps you engaged and avoids becoming boring or monotonous, while also avoiding being too over-the-top) -Editing style is phenomenal. Not just the funny edits added for comedic effect, but also the gameplay sections picked for each portion of the playthrough work very well. -The strategic information presented was handled great. Not only do we get to know what he's doing and why he does it, but he also explains thing he didn't do and why they would have been ineffective, and even things he SHOULD have done and things he didn't look into. Aside of making for a more immersive watching experience, it's also a great foundation block for anyone attempting this challenge on their own. This is all I can think of so far, but I've yet to watch the rest of the video. Thank you
Nice video! One thing I wanted to point out is that the only move that *doesn't* pierce DEF for the Shadow Queen is the hand slap. Literally every other move bypasses DEF so Koops was close to being KO'd quite a few times LOL
LOL Yoshi still being the GOAT even with being able to attack only once. In all seriousness, great work doing (what I assume is) your first challenge run of PMTTYD. I haven't really given no action commands much thought prior to this, but it is pretty incredible how the meta changes so drastically with for example Yoshi going from the second best partner to one of the worst in this but I wasn't surprised at all to see all of it come down to Peril Koops LOL. PS: 1. Magnus' Crowd Cannon attack cannot target the back party member, so the win is actually consistent and has no luck at all if you put your meatshield character on the front. 2. Vivian didn't get lucky on Gloomtail's earthquake attack that is why there is no popup. She is immune to quake attacks same as flurry, you can see this if an enemy uses the Earthquake item, or on Magnus 1.0's quake attack on Flurry, to give an example. Its such an ultra-specific niche trait that Vivian and Flurry have that barely even comes into play since only a handful of enemies have quake attacks. 3. Earthquake missing because Koops was dizzy is HILARIOUS and I didn't know that could happen. I am 99% sure that is a Earthquake goof and not something that can happen with other attacking items, or I've gotten extremely lucky with those.
It’s incredible how many small mechanics this game has! I’ve probably played through this whole game no less than 20 times and still haven’t picked up on any of the mechanics you mentioned. I actually have done a couple challenge runs in this game before but it was many years ago and not recorded.
Idk how I ended up here, but your vids already have really good quality, rhythm, and production value. Your knowledge of the game is also self evident. I'm pretty interested in seeing where your channel goes.
While it’s TECHNICALLY not possible I don’t think we should count a forced battle that literally has only a single way to actually win as the reason the challenge is failed
Technically it would be possible to beat the game without using the gulp action command in chapter 3 if you allow bookcase jump, to get yoshi after skipping all the glitz pit fights you need to "re"-fight the minor league but you can skip the armored harriers and keep yoshi
I think everyone was expecting the Yoshi having to break the rules in Chapter 3, I think you handled it well, glad the video continues. It is very much practically a cutscene. Great video and really well done!
Dude, mad respect for how quickly you've been making videos despite the low sub count. Your scripting is solid, the comedy is there (wouldn't mind playing some stuff up but I'm also not complaining), and the simplicity in editing keeps everything moving. In other words, to my eyes, you are just a handful of videos from getting some consistent viewership going. Personally, I don't think YT will ever have a lack of challenge runners but more are always something I like to see.
29:20 I think there is only one explanation: he ground up and snorted a d-down p-up badge as "preparation" for this fight, and the doping scandal hasn't yet been uncovered so goombella doesn't know about it
What. The. Actual. F@ck? I was watching this literally thinking it was just another grown up channel that makes great content and then I just saw your subscriber count. That's just astonishing. You've got all the makings of a great youtuber, just keep the good work up, you'll build your audience in no time. Good luck!
Bro, what?! I will not stand for this injustice; +1 Subscriber! Didn't even realize he was new before reading your comment. Man's 3 weeks old and already putting out better content than too many other RU-vidrs; I'm excited to see what he gets into next.
What. The. Actual. F@ck? I was reading this literally thinking it was just another comment about a channel with a couple thousand subscribers, maybe 200k, and how it deserves more, and then I just saw his subscriber count. That's just astonishing. He really does have all the qualities found on the big channels that make this kind of content, it's just a matter of time for more people to discover the channel.

This is an insanely well polished video and I'm so surprised you don't even have 1k subs yet. I'm sure you'll grow in the future, keep up the good work
So glad the comments are mix of people showering you in praise and also pointing out fun niche facts about a game we all love. This is one of my favorite videos on this game! Your editing was sharp, there was good humor throughout, and it seemed to be quite difficult without being overwhelming. Suffice to say, you earned a sub from me and many others man 💯
Very well made video! So glad this popped up in my feed. Can’t wait to see your account pop off in subscribers! I also love this game so the idea of playing it this way makes me chuckle - I’m hyped for the remake to play in some different ways than usual
I'm commenting at the start of chapter eight. I haven't seen you use defense raising badges for most of the run so far except for danger defense up. I suppose that's due to fact that you need to spend your turns killing things, and that you wouldn't want to waste your time playing slowly. Honestly at the start of this challenge I expected you to play defensively using items and vivian for your damage (i knew the action command only added burn), but i had forgotten how cheap jumpman badge was. Now this is an fun challenge video to watch.
I want to say that "appeal to the crowd" does work if it's your partner doing it. A tip for anyone playing in the future and has a different strategy or challenge run
I think he uses the partner to appeal in one of the fights. It just happens fast cause Grubba's challenges are a non issue. The one time he forgot, he completely forgot to do it.
I actually have an idea for how you can beat the armored harriers without action commands. The problem… it’s beating the Pit of 100 Trials and getting the Return Postage badge.
UPDATE: I just watched a video from RU-vidr Phantom A where he uses the early Ultra Hammer glitch as well as a glitch to get onto Grubba's cupboard into the vents which allows him to skip EVERY fight of the Glitz Pit, INCLUDING THE ARMORED HARRIERS. This in theory could make the challenge actually possible.
My mental commentary: This video concept seems interesting... oh, 10k views. Whatever, if it's not good I can just find a different one. *Video displays surprisingly good production value and audio quality* Wait is this just after release or some... > ~450 subs *Blink* ...That can't be right. Regardless of your current popularity, I find this content to be very well edited, scripted, and paced, and the video itself is a good mix of informative and entertaining.
im not totally sure how i ended up watching this video but man, it was captivating until the very end. great editing, great humor, great gameplay, and the plot twist at the end was seriously a great way to top it off. subscribed!
There is a way to take out the Bristles in Petal Meadows without items, but it is not an option in this challenge. You can kill them with super guards.
Jesus Christ, the amount of time it took me to figure out that the music at 0:32 is the pause music from Mario Strikers Charged... I have no idea how it finally hit me.
@@BringlesCan Jolene and Prince Mush look kinda off too lol. Jolene looks like she has a tan (and her mouth looks odd with her lipstick being brown,) and Prince Mush's face looks like he's seen some shit.
Really awesome video! I love TTYD but never did any challenge runs on it, this was cool to see :D! Your narration is quite good and I love watching these kinds of videos. Definitely subscribed, hope you make more stuff like this!
Fun fact I’m reminded of by the glitz pit section, first time I ever played the game I completely missed the game telling you there’s a bed to heal your hp and fp. So I would do as many fights as I could manage then run back to rogueport to heal, over and over and over…
I'm surprised in all my years I never thought to try this... the fact that I didn't know half of the things he said happened has me legit curious what other moves do when you fail the action commands. I only know from another video that Mini-bomb just randomly throws the bombs and doesn't whiff.
Fun fact: If you had ever used Fire Hammer during this run, you would have been softlocked, as it's the only move in the game that has no timer. If you don't press any action commands, the fireball never drops, and you just sit there for all eternity. Also, although Bomb Squad isn't the best, it does give Bobbery an attack option, so he's not quite a meatshield like Flurrie
I find it a little funny that regular attacks need action commands in ttyd but items don’t, and then in super paper Mario regular attacks don’t need action commands but the items do (for the most part)
It leads to an interesting dynamic where many items in SPM literally do the same thing when cooked, but the only difference is you don't have to do the action command. Though SPM has a TON of items that are completely pointless to cook. Honey shroom being the worst offender, mixing 2 items together to heal...as much as the individual ingredients (heals 10 HP but so does a shroom shake and Honey syrups are really hard to get)
I think this was the first game I ever played. Must have been 2 or 3. I do remember pulling off max earth tremors and thinking it was cool. Never made it past chapter 4 since I couldn't find the 'p' in the well. Doopliss frustrated me so much because I looked up guides when I picked up the game 3-4 years later and I typed DOOPLISS but the didn't take it and I didn't understand why it didn't work. I'm honestly surprised I got as far as I did at that age considering the Glitz Pit was something I completed. I also remember fright masking everything under the sun because I liked the animation.
I remember way back in kindergarten my older sister had to ask one of her friends for me how to beat the Armored Harriers in chapter 3 and how to find the P for Doopliss in chapter 4 LOL
@@BringlesCan I remember gamefaqs being the go to for this back in the day. I was probably 8 or 9 before I actually beat this all the way through the first time. After chapter 4, the game is pretty straight forward story-wise. Chapter 6 was my absolute favorite but the charm wears off after you know the game. Glad the remake is coming out to give a new generation the same joy we felt.
I always forget that Dry Bones are weak to fire instead of immune to it like in the platformers. (Hasn’t caused me any trouble yet; I haven’t been able to play TTYD in a while and in Paper Mario 64 I use Power Bomb.)
i would have kinda allowed holding 1 button, such as sweet treat - still no timing or mashing required, just holding a button and all. youd hit every poison shroom there but it just opens up some free recovery. looking forward to see how the video plays out without it though :)
im terrirfied of using items cause i always feel like ineed use them later for the final boss. LOL. at least thats how i was when i was little. must hoard everything Im a hoarder
I did a challenge on the first paper Mario game where I played through the whole game and did not use hammer or jump commands. Believe it or not this was actually more challenging the earlier on I was in the game and got less hard as the game went on. Tutankoopa was difficult I had to hit the action command every time on partners or they couldn’t attack. I’m gonna retry it on the thousand year door remake.
I haven't watched the video yet, but I would think Chapter 3 might be the only exception, since Yoshi's Gulp is the only way to deal damaged to the Armored Harriers, and the move doesn't work when the Action Command fails, and since you have to do it twice to beat the Armored Harriers with Yoshi's initial stats, that's a minimum of two action commands. Edited: Yeah, I figured. Great video overall, except for hitting Whacka... was the challenge worth it? 2nd Edit: Showstopper actually DOES work without Action Commands, but it has an incredibly low success rate, depending on the enemy it's used on. I know this because I saw a TAS by Malleo where he uses the move to defeat Bowser and Kammy in the Palace of Shadow, without Action Commands, and he says that the chance it works on Bowser/Kammy is 2% each with a mistimed Showstopper.
Damn you have me beat, i first played this game when i was 5. I learned to read kinda late and literally couldnt beat this game for years because i couldnt read and i couldnt figure out that the save blocks let you save the game. I was so confused how i was expected to get through the whole thing without saving
While I generally try not to use items, on the Bald Clefs & Bristles my young mind knew the perfect strategy: Goombella tattles them both, Plumberman then POW's them. I also should've seen the item-block-offs coming.
45:18 She does 1 while piercing defense, which is ig better than most when the enemy has a defense buff. It's also a funny animation. No stealing items sadly 59:00 Sounds like that could be a clutch moment for the Space Food item. No freeze shanenigans with one of them.
