If you agitate the ice while it freezes, it will have fewer bubbles and the ice will be clearer. For agitation, try a very mild vibration. (Stop it.)

If you filled a styrofoam cooler with dry ice, put a blower on one end of it and a vent on the other, and pointed the vent at the surface of the ice you're carving, you could probably increase your carving time substantially. You might also try to layer some dry ice pellets on top of the ice blanks (once they're frozen solid, obviously) in the freezer, to lower the temperature of the ice before you start carving. That might crack the ice blank but it's worth a try.

fun video! FYI the reason why the bulge was on the bottom with the distilled water, is because your tray was insulated, so the water froze from the top down, when the expansion happened the top was relatively thick, so it pushed downward. With the metal tray, the water was able to freeze from all sides, so the expansion was able to push the still relatively thin top up. Pro Tip, if you want perfectly clear, haze free ice, Freeze from the top down, and stop before fully frozen to the bottom, and use warm distilled water. (Small cooler, in a large chest freezer works great)

you need directional freezing, you were on the right track with the insulated method.. just don't let it freeze all the way.. leave some water in the bottom and you should be able to pull off a nice flat perfectly clear sheet of ice there's a machine called a clinebell that makes the huge blocks of ice for carving, and it freezes directionally from the bottom along with circulating pumps so all of the gases can escape and any expansion can happen outward instead of in the middle/under the blocks of ice
@JoeBcrafts

That I.C.E Cap would be useful for ordinary carves as well. The router exhaust chip/dust clearing "feature" makes chip/dust collection harder. By redirecting the air so that it doesn't add to the "escape" velocity of the chip/dust, dust collection should work better.

Ice is pretty wild to work with. A long time ago, I worked on a commercial for Nike that featured a lot of ice carving, and the only way we were able to make it work was by filming at a literal ice factory where we had and entire floor of a building refrigerated to allow us to work with the ice. Kept the ice cold, but also wreaked havoc on the equipment (and the crew).

A trick market gardeners use when building DIY cold rooms for produce is to use a window A/C and "cool bot" to override the united thermostat to get temps down to 35 degrees or so.. the downside is Coolbots are stupidly expensive - 400 bucks or so. If you're willing to do surgery on the A/C, bypassing the thermostat and using something like an ink bird, or if you're really feeling adventurous, wiring in a PID and solid state relay are also options.

Hi Wesley! You can create your own mini-freezer using a window air conditioner and insulating sheet foam. Build a box of insulation, cut a hole for the ac unit. Move the air temp probe from the interior (cool) side to the outdoor (warm) side and the unit will run continuously. I modified one to cool liquid, which is much more complicated, but was able to easily cool 5 gal of antifreeze to -18C. The only problem you may have is high humidity might freeze water on the cooling coils. Any cooling is better than no cooling!

I did ice carving when I was in culinary school. The blocks of ice were about 4 feet tall two feet wide and 18 inches thick. The blocks were made in a giant box and there was a circulating pump. Evidently that reduces the air bubbles. The air bubbles make it weak, and porous. Oh and your first try, think Arnold’s voice and say “It’s not a tumor” (kidengarten cop)
@thematthewlondon
@thematthewlondon 2 года назад
it's called a clinebell machine, and along with the pumps the ice is also frozen directionally from the bottom, so gases have a chance to escape as it freezes upwards

Ice expanse because the air trapped in the water can’t freeze so when the water starts to freeze the air tries to escape but can’t so the bubbles press against to ice and create mound’s so if you put the water in a vacuum chamber first you will get a better result just think about a bottle of soft drink in a freezer and what happens if you try to open a half frozen one it expands rapidly well water does the same thing but on a smaller scale

You could place a few blocks of dry ice on the 'water' ice while the CNC is working (just outside the work area). CO2 is heavier than air and while the dry ice is sublimating it will leave a temporary cold layer of CO2 above the water ice - less melting of the 'water' ice. It's a simple and safe experiment to try. Also, why not add a vacuum next to the CNC router to remove the ice chips? ** edit ** Forgot to add for other readers - CO2 freezes/sublimates at −78.5 °C/−109.2 °F. The cold CO2 will always keep the 'water' ice frozen.
@WesleyTreat
@WesleyTreat 2 года назад
Unfortunately, the spinning collet nut still creates circulation that would more than likely blow away the CO2. A lot of the melt I got even after adding the ICE Cap was almost definitely caused by the wind from the spinning nut. As for dust collection, the ice chips like to stick and don't suck up as freely as sawdust. And after a couple of minutes, the bit creates slush instead of chips, which is worse and stays in the cut. It worked better to suck it up once the bit moved out of the way.
