I'm blacks and I've had friends who've put me down because of my Cosplay choices. Yeah it has bothered me but the characters that I Cosplay I either really like how they look or I connect to them on a personal level. I've cosplayed as Ymir and Mikasa from AOT and Blake from RWBY and I look nothing like them but I still had fun and enjoyed myself. Last month I went to Katsucon with my friend and I was a little nervous because it was my first con and I got nothing but positive feedback. And I was cosplaying as Senbonzakura Hatsune Miku. After that experience all I want to do now is attend more cons and Cosplay more. Videos like these have really helped me because recently I told one of my friends I was going to cosplay as Honey from Ouran And she said I couldn't because I was black. The comment hurt but I brushed off because I remembered videos like these :)

i've always felt too tan to ever do cosplaying..... my skintone is the exact same as freida pinto's (look her up if you don't know her) and i always thought that i could never cosplay because all the anime characters i like are all pale. i even almost considered using skin lightening products my skin despite the harsh effects of it. But this video really changed my point of view. I don't think you're too ______ to cosplay! anyone can cosplay. despite race, height, weight, gender, etc.

O.O I have been cosplaying since 2010, and I have never been snubbed/judged for not wearing color contacts. Also, it's not their place to tell you what you should and shouldn't wear. And you have good reason not to wear color contacts! They're just noise, their opinion isn't important.

Cosplay is for everyone and is about fun, it doesn't matter what shape, size, skin color or gender you are. I get PO when people say you can't Cosplay a character you like or want to because your to fat, skinny, tall, short etc. My friend went to Metrocon as Prince Kaito with our group of friends and there was a girl cosplaying this anime model and she was getting mad fun of because she as a little over-weight and this model was skinny and slim, and she wasn't and this made her cry.This really PO my friend that was Prince Kaito from Vocaliod went up to her and she had roses to give to girls that looked lonely and sad and she gave the girl a rose and asked her to be her princess and said very romantic things to make her feel better and went the whole rest of the day escorting her like she was a princess and such.

@maniclehedgehog

I can't agree with this 100%. Some people, myself included, want to cosplay to really feel like the character they're cosplaying and as such wouldn't want to dress up as someone outside of their own height/weight/skintone range. My desire to cosplay has been a major contributing factor in my attempting to lose weight(started at 200lbs, currently at 180, my goal is to lose my I guess beer-belly is about the best descriptor I can give so that I can pull off a Kotetsu from Tiger & Bunny by around March 2015). I know you didn't mean to, but the way you phrased this video made it sound like you were invalidating the whole idea that you would want to match your appearance to your character's appearance.
@MangoSirene
@MangoSirene 10 лет назад
That's great if that's how YOU want to cosplay. That's awesome. But that doesn't mean every single cosplayer has to subscribe to that school of thought and approach the hobby with the same desires. Maybe some other guy really loves Kotetsu and wants to cosplay him, but he happens to be 200lbs. There's no legitimate reason for him not to do it; the fact that YOU wouldn't do it doesn't mean he shouldn't. The way other people choose to cosplay doesn't have to be the same way you choose to, and that's okay. That's what the point of this video is. You do you, buddy.

I honestly watch this whenever I feel discouraged or self-conscious about cosplaying my favourite characters cause I feel like I can't do them justice cause I look nothing like them. This totally made my day. My friends poke fun at me (When they actually mean it, but want me to just blow it off) saying "You can't cosplay *insert pale character here* because you're dark complected!" And then we'll get into an argument about how 1st. I am not black or mixed, I just have a dark complection. (No offense, being black wouldn't be bad. I've just been called black, Asian (because of my eyes), Mexican (Which still wouldn't be bad, it's just I'm sick of being assumed to be a race I'm not.), etc.) 2nd. I can cosplay who I want and you will not stop me. 3rd. I'm not the only one who doesn't look like their character, so shut up.

I actually have a similar issue except my friend flat out told me I can't cosplay a darker skinned (not black, though I guess the character is half black I believe) and told me it'd be racist NO MATTER what. She said it's whitewashing a character, or something like that. And also said that he view isn't an opinion. Kinda sad these people think like they do. Hope you still cosplay whoever you want :)
@Hayden5075
@Hayden5075 10 лет назад
I don't have that problem as my default skin tone is not all that dark but I'm of 90% Mediterranean decent and I tan fairly dark. To the point that my roommate called me black. I get away with it because I have almond shaped eyes that get squinty when I smile so I get mistaken as Asian. But I do what I want and have fun.

Thank you for this! I think I feel more confident about cosplaying now ~ I am a chunky 14 year old who has always had a love for anime and video games, not an otaku exactly because I know the characters were not real, but I loved how they were designed. I heard about cosplay just last year(I'm a noob lolz) and the idea to dress as any character I want sounded amazing, and there was a whole community who liked the same stuff as me who I could show my costume to and maybe even become friends with them. I decided last year that I wanted to cosplay Zelda(from Twilight Princess), I searched up some Zelda cosplays that were cool. I started planning the dress and was excited about cosplay. One day I found some videos about cosplay, and found out that there were some judgmental people who said only skinny people should cosplay. This already made me a little unconfident about cosplaying. As I saw more, I realized that there were alot of people who were judgemental about cosplaying. I became extremely unconfident and didn't want to go at all. I stopped with the Zelda cosplay and planned to lose weight(which didn't work out btw :c). I was watching more things about cosplay to encourage me until I came across a video stating that:"White people shouldn't cosplay Japanese characters, only Asians should". This made me give up completely, there was clearly nothing I could do to not get judged. After all this, I began to believe that cosplay was like a beauty pageant, all about looks. After seeing this video and other support for all cosplayers... I am now confident enough to cosplay. I also support cosplayers of ALL types. People can cosplay WHOEVER they want to, its their choice. Cosplaying is dressing up as any character you want. I like any good cosplay. Cosplays that are good are good costumes. That is all that matters. ^^

You're adorable. I love your videos. You remind me of Debbie Gibson back when she was a teeny bopper. Adorbs. I love this video in particular. I have been a cosplay admirer for years but have been too shy to do it, but this New Year I made the resolution to start doing things I've been afraid to do. So I've been working like mad making a cosplay for my size 12, 32 year old self to strut my stuff in at Blizzcon. And I'm excited. Thanks for spreading positive cosplay messages, especially to the newbies like me who are sometimes afraid to geek out with our staff out.

Ive noticed some of the people in the comments of your videos are treating you like you're stupid and that you're so perfect that you've never experienced anything bad in life. I wish they would watch some more of your videos so they could better understand you and where you're coming from on your point of views. Yes you are my cosplay idol and I love you and the videos to death, but I realize that you're not perfect, and probably have experienced different and more things than me and other people who are commenting on your videos naively without even thinking about things you could be/ have gone through. Anyways sorry for that weird short paragraph, just wanted you to know I support you and hope they people will start to better understand the things you're saying.

I know this is old but I just found you mango, and although I admit to falling into this habit of comparing the characters too much to my (or others) appearance, I commend your thoughtful and absolutely true sentiment. For people struggling with this truth, all I can say is that whatever you do try to make it the best possible despite your differences. Mango, you rock!

I love this video! However, help me understand something here. I get the fact that everyone has the right to dress as someone (No matter height, weight, race, gender, age, or style of making costumes) and it's a belief I stand right by. On the other hand, "age" is currently one of the biggest issues I'm dealing with for the time being and here's the explanation: Most of you here know by now that I really want to Crossplay as Anime girls from every series I've watched and admired- no, I'm not actually dressing like "every girl" but I'm choosing them based on what I've experienced, admired, and loved. Because of this I do worry that a moment in time will come where I may start to age too quickly and thereby will be too old, haggy, and ugly to pull off even Hatsune Miku, Sakura Kinomoto, or even Marisa Kirisame. :'( That's the real tear jerker there. But what I've been trying to understand here is this: Because everyone can Cosplay, does it truly mean that "everyone" from all age groups can at least "try" to pull characters off from shows they've either grew up watching or possibly have a HUGE fandom that just never goes away? Cause with myself, at the current age of twenty four, I plan to stay an Anime fan and Cosplayer for pretty much my whole life and I'll never let my age get me down from my goals, happiness in life, or dreams.

I'm so glad you've made this video! This year is my first year that I'm going to cosplay and I was super excited! I was going to go as Azusa from K-On! to a convention but when I told my friend, he just laughed and said, "You can't pull that off unless you take every bone out of your face so you become a moe blob." and "I'm going to laugh at you if your cosplay is bad!" and that really made me sad. Also that friend has a problem with people who cosplay out of the character's "figure range" which just made me plain mad when I heard that! But after watching this video, I decided to stick with my cosplay and to not give a damn about what he thinks! Thank you c:

Sadly there are some cosplay elitists out there who think they're better than everyone else. They nitpick about everything ranging from what materials to use to your size or race IE- they'll say someone is too fat to be a sailor scout or too busty to be Lina Inverse.Another example, I'm working out to lose weight and tone up right now debating whether I should try to cosplay Korra as one of my cosplays for this summer's AX or not.Problem is, I'm paler than paper and I'm afraid people will wanna put my head on the proverbial pike for cosplaying a character based off of Inuits when I'm Ulster Irish I like Korra but I don't want people thinking I'm racist. Also another example of some elitism are some of the commentary you hear from some of the cosplayers on an earlier episode of Syfy's Heroes of Cosplay. I love cosplaying but at the same time there are days where I'm afraid of not being good enough for that particular character.

I look NOTHING like these character and yet all the conventions I go to like that, people still loved my cosplays and tons of people took my picture! So yeah, no matter what you look like or who you are you can cosplay whoever you want!

You ma'am have not only earned my like and subscription, you have earned my respect, given me hope, and relief I admit, and I will share your vid everywhere. Some people have that mindset and attack others for those reasons and some internally believe in that mindset and look for characters that fit that image. There is a difference in not wanting to wear a certain type of cosplay and believing there is a can and can't on what each person is "allowed" to be. I'd say the only rules are ones that SHOULD be common sense everyday all the time and be applied to every single thing and person like be respectful, polite, friendly and critique and voice opinions in respectful polite friendly ways.

Honestly, i am absolutely terrified. But that isn't going to stop me. Thank you for being such a huge inspiration to me and so many others. Thank you so so much.

Well, I am glad most people in the cosplay world feel like this. It is the ones that don't cosplay at all/don't understand it and a certain (very small percentage) of cosplayers that might actually say something negative about a costume that I guess I'm self-conscience about. Since there are few slightly overweight, Caucasian near middle-aged characters that I really want to cosplay! ;-D
