Hey, Richard, would too much inbreeding prove wrong? Do we need to refresh the blood by getting some wild caught ones from the right sources, so to speak? I noticed these guys from Microwilderness sale beautiful full grown or mature females and males. Are they wild caught? Do they explain how old they're perhaps? Thank for your videos and the answers.

I love my tarantulas. I work in a pet store that sells “red knee tarantulas” I think the ones we get r b. Boehmei. A lady came in very upset because she bought a t at petco labeled “red knee” and after she explained it (spinning in circles and kicking hairs) I had a pretty good idea what it was. She showed me a picture and I was sure she had a m. Robustum. She told me she was terrified of him and that he was aggressive. I jumped on the chance and offered to buy him off of her. She accepted. I got him into a deeper substrate and smaller enclosure I have not seen 1 threat display or any signs of “aggression” I felt so bad for the lady because she just wanted a calm t to watch and try to hold and she got the opposite because of those damn common names.
@screeaveDestination
@screeaveDestination 3 года назад
I think this lady is a good example that not everyone should get animals.
@atticacouch
@atticacouch 3 года назад
@@screeaveDestination she had done research and had the correct information for most to the of the “fire leg” species. She had no clue that scientific names were a thing and she was completely caught off guard by my defensive little guy. She told me she got haired and that she couldn’t move the enclosure without him spinning in circles and kicking hair. He is fossorial but she had info for a terrestrial T so he was just stressed. I informed her on scientific names and pointed her to some videos on here. She genuinely wanted to do the best for a t but she got a less chill not super beginner friendly little dude. Everyone starts somewhere! Everyone has the privilege of having a pet I try to inform rather than saying they shouldn’t be involved in this hobby. The more people that love tarantulas the better.
@angelzfire312

@@screeaveDestination this is a good example that eduction on scientific names should be used more often than the common ones and that’s where that comes to a full stop 🤷🏻‍♀️
@djjnonya2170
@djjnonya2170 2 года назад
here we go with the common name nonsense. The common name had no bearing on the wrong tarantula being sold. ZERO. it's not only illogical but it's impossible. If I am looking at a Chaco golden knee and call it a costa rican zebra stiped knee tarantula it's no different than if I'm looking at a G. Pulchripes and call it a Aphonopelma seemanni. You either know what it is or you don't. I understand the variables of the same names found in different regions but how would your story have been different if a woman thought she was purchasing a "red knee tarantula" having no idea what that was and then ending up with an m. robustum. The use of scientific names would have made ZERO difference. You either know what you are looking at as the buyer or you don't. You either know what you are looking at as the seller or you don't. If you don't the names are irrelevant. I don't know why this is so difficult for people to grasp.
@atticacouch
@atticacouch 2 года назад
@@djjnonya2170 I agree that it’s an easily avoidable mistake on both parts. Some people don’t realize there’s way more to tarantulas. A lot of people I have talked to that aren’t in the hobby assume there’s is only 1 kind of tarantula and people often ask y I have so many if they r all the same and I then take the opportunity to educate them on the different type and different behaviors. I think anyone who gets a pet should do as much research as possible when getting any critter no matter how small. Unfortunately most people do little to zero research before purchasing an animal and I think that’s the real problem. She had looked up and research a red knee tarantula and to someone that doesn’t know that they all look the same a slight pattern difference wouldn’t have set off red flags. I’m just glad she gave him to me.

My brachypelma Emilia is far too chill. She is Litterially like a pet rock and will laze around, sit in my palm hours upon hours without a single care in the world. However I dont don't typically do it for that look as she can get a little itchy within long periods of time. I know she may not mind me but I love her to pieces. I don‘t fear spiders, but I am arachnophobic, meaning my body has extreme over-reactions to them. But I was always fascinated by them. They are on my list of favorite animals. I recently got into Dave‘s Little Beasties‘ videos, and he is just what I needed. His attitude is the most calm, collected and relaxed I have ever seen around spiders. I can highly recommend his channel. It is great exposure therapy with tons of scientific and anecdotal information, and absolutely no rush to get to a point. Dave is a breeder/seller and has pairing, egg-sac removal, rehousing and general care videos, because he cares about education first.

The crossbreeding thing brings out a hilarious story to me. I had terrible luck with my first two tarantulas dying on me. I was desperate to find one, as having a little critter to take care of is really good for my mental health, so I made a dumb decision again and went to Petsmart because I had already tried two reputable breeders and figured I’d just try to go cheap with my third-not a good idea, I know. They had a T there with a picture of a b. smithi on the price card and it was labeled as, I kid you not, “assorted Mexican tarantula”. There was only one, it wasn’t like there was a variety of different Mexican tarantulas on display or anything. I thought the label was absolutely hilarious because they were marking this T like it was some kind of mutt breed of every Mexican tarantula ever. I jokingly told my roommate they labeled this tarantula like a bag of trail mix. So that’s what his name is. Trail Mix has outlived every other T I’ve had before who died on me, molted several times for me and is doing great despite being the most temperamental brachy I’ve ever known. He turned out to be a b. emilia by the way. :)

Another good spider for overcoming arachnophobia is the Jumping Spider! I have one now and it’s my first pet! It is a Platycryptus Undatus juvenile who is now in pre-molt. While I was never arachnophobic, I didn’t really like bugs and kind of had a fear of them. But ever since I got it I’ve been outside in my backyard every day looking for what kind of insects and arachnids I can find! It really does help.

For me the fun in the hobby comes from the variety of tarantulas. Theres something for everyone out there and they look and behave all differently. I personally started with a Brachipelma hamorii, the classic way i suppose :D Then upgraded to a Grammostola pulchripes and its really calm and pretty. Then after i got a little used to them i bought my first old world, the Chilobrachys sp. electric blue. And one year after i bought my 2 last tarantulas for now. 2 Harpactira pulchripes slings. I bought all my tarantulas as slings because i want to watch them grow and see all stages. Them molting is like christmas because you know they are fine and healthy and they get bigger afterwards.

If you have time, could you talk about the lack of captive-bred scorpions? It seems like that is falling behind tarantulas with people still selling a LOT of wild-caughts. At a recent mid-size expo, I saw over a dozen scorpion-only purveyors (no spiders for sale), and half of them had ONLY wild-caughts, and a most of the others had a mix of bred and WC. It was disheartening. The sellers who sold both Ts and scorps seemed to be better, but even they had a lot of WC.
@getshwiftygaming447
@getshwiftygaming447 8 месяцев назад
As someone who has bred scorpions before I second this but I'd also like to say the biggest reason you see a lack of CB scorpions is the fact that it can be hard to pair them without cannibalism occurring and even if you end up being successful there's a fair chance the female will get nervous and eat her babies. I never had cannibalism personally but I've heard many horror stories.

Hey Richard great video 👍. I have a question thats off topic from the video... i have a desert hairy scorpion and its almost ready to molt. How can i help its process of shedding its exoskeleton? I know that on my brachypelma A. and avicularia avicularia i helped it by over misting and adding more humidity. Thanks. Next video should be on scorpions 🦂.

On the topic of breeding new species I can only point over to the mammalian side of breeding. We used to selectively breed wolves that were docile, and then specialized them. And then we got fancy. Now we have Chihuahuas, who are too small, too thin, and are born with nerve damage and chronic pain (aka the „twitching“). There is no need to go fancy with breeding new traits into existence. Spiders are ornamental pets only, and already exist in all shapes, forms, and colors.

I had a huge irrational fear of spiders my whole life ( however I never ever killed them , always got my husband to rehome them outside ) I baby sat a tarantula last Christmas and fell in love. I have phiddippus johnsoni jumpers now and just got my very first tarantula ( carabiner versicolor) yesterday !

Ok Richard. Here is a fantastic question. Are there albino tarantulas? I will be asking this on the Facebook forum shortly. Something to think about.

Came to get your opinion on this subject because someone in your group told me not to crossbreed and it just make me want to do it much much more. So I want to know why I should not.... Let's see. Edit,,, well said. I respect your advice and opinion

I absolutely love love love to hold my tarantulas. But I found out quite a few months ago that if they have a big abdomen and you drop them it can explode and they will die. So now I will never intentionally hold them I will still pet them and love them.

I'm fairly certain that my B. hamorii is a hamorii/smithi hybrid. She's looks like a smithy but with the black markings of the hamorii on her knee joints. O_O I became aware of her somewhat "unusual" look when I showed my hubby pictures of Brachypelma hamorii and smithy to show him the differences in their appearance. I still love my "Lucy" to bits tho. She's a bit of a grumpy girl but so adorable at the same time, lol.

I personally would be way to concerned for the animal to handle any of mine. but its my opinion that its up to the owner & as long as its done with care I don't have a problem with it.

Same here! I've been asked by friends/family multiple times to identify true spider species.....I tell them its Ts I have not true spiders and I'm no expert 😅 I got a ball python last year and yep been asked to identify snakes by people, owning one pet snake does not make me an expert at identifying snake species 😅

Wouldn't the exception to the no morph rule be p muirinus and avicularia? And hence wouldn't it be ok to breed the morphs within whose species together?

Are there specific types of turantulas that are out of their hides and burrows, most of the time or does it just go by the Turantulas "personality"

Not sure if this comment would fall under another video but in your experience when you have had to handle tarantulas, are your hands always itchy (if they are New World of course) or do they tend to itch more the longer you hold them? I remember holding an Arizona Blonde about 6 years ago but I don’t remember my hand being itchy afterwards. Then again, If I remember correctly, the tarantula was very still while I was holding it. Just for some relevant background info, this was at a reptile rescue sanctuary and on this particular day they were doing a presentation on tarantulas and snakes.

My hands only get itchy if they kick the hairs and it gets on my skin. I have a whole video that goes in depth explaining urticating hairs and how they work you can watch here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ujXFkRIeJQs.html
