Here is an alternate production recording of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," written for the Disney animated feature The Lion King by Tim Rice (lyrics) and Elton John (music). The recording vocals by Nathan Lane as Timon, Ernie Sabella as Pumbaa, Lea Salonga as adult Nala, and Matthew Broderick as adult Simba.
An especially difficult sequence in the film to get right, "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" went through multiple iterations before settling on the version in the film. This version features much more of a comedy focus in the first half via Timon (Lane) and Pumbaa (Sabella).
The final version of the song would be sung by Lane and Sabella (though in a much shorter intro and added outro verse), Kristle Edwards as an off-screen narrator, Joseph Williams as adult Simba, and Sally Dworsky as adult Nala.
Salonga was brought on by lyricist Tim Rice, as the two were also working on the Disney feature Aladdin at the time. (Previously, she and Aladdin co-star Brad Kane had recorded demos to both "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "I Just Can't Wait to Be King.") At this time, I'm unsure whether she was being considered as the singing voice for adult Nala when this was recorded, though she would later go on to voice the title character in the film Mulan.
Though Broderick would later go on to have success in a variety of musical projects, notably The Producers co-staring Lion King co-star Lane, his singing vocals would be unused in the film, telling Conan O'Brian in a 1996 interview, "In their words, 'it just really took us out of the movie.'"
