Thanks alot for this video, I really like your car, I own 97 Ford expedition 4wd I always save info, videos and pics from Internet as much I can. I'm willing to do more on mine unfortunately not much of upgrade parts for this generation
Appreciate the vid! I have a stock '05 Expedition, but I want to add some upgrades (mostly to get clearance) so it's more capable for off-roading and overlanding.
What are you looking for? I started a company selling off road equipment for Broncos, I can pretty easily made some stuff like I did for Expeditions. The problem is 2 things, do people really want to spend money or are they just wishing, (no judgement but parts aren't free) and shipping is expensive too. email me at rockymtnbroncos@aol.com to talk more.
Just a note on tires. If you get the tires siped, you can run relatively aggressive mud terrains on ice and snow just fine. I have been running Hankook Dynapro MT tires all year round for 4 years now in Nordic winters no problems. Grip on ice and snow is comparable to dedicated studded winter tires. The truck is essentially the same, a 1997 4wd with 5.4 and 3.73. Just that I am running 285/75R16 tires with no lift on cheap 16x8" Mickey Thompson wheels with 4" BS (stock wheels are 4.5" backspacing). No rubbing anywhere even under full compression and full lock (except for the corners of the front bumper plastic which I took a handsaw to).
I had 315 7017 tires on my 2002 expedition with no lift kit the backs rubbed under full compression and had to trim a little bit of plastic off the front lower part of the bumper
Love to see something other than a toyota up in the mountains! I am currently working on an 05 F150 with 34" tires. How do you like the 4.56 gears? I'm torn between 4.10 and 4.56. Thanks!
Thanks! I went with 4.56 and don't regret it, something to think about is your speedometer will be off. I used a tuner to adjust but it drove me crazy. Good luck with your truck, I have a 2017 and as soon as the warranty is up I'll be eyeing it for my next project.
Quick question. Why not go with a body lift instead of torsion twist? Ive seen cheap body lifts and am wondering if they're a good option for me or if I should choose something else. Whats your experience been?
I'm not a fan of body lifts. The reason I lift a vehicle is to give more clearance under the frame off road. That's also why I install larger tires. A body lift does nothing for better off road ability.
@@starksexpeditions121 I have a white one eb, but the trims all white. I've been up there with friends before shooting, but wasn't really sure on how the big elephant cars do thru there. Appreciate the response bro 🙏
Love your rig man. I’m hoping to do a similar build with my 99 4.6. I picked up a set of FX4 F150 wheels I’m currently repainting (they have corrosion) and I just bought some 285/70/17 KO2s. My eventual plan is a regear to 4.56 with 35x11.50r17s. Did you custom build your sliders?
Thanks! Regear is expensive but worth it. I built the sliders, very simple and I'll be doing a video about soon. If you live near Denver Colorado I'd built a set for you.
Did you specify the “mild lift”? I didn’t catch that. I have a 2011 and I’m liking the idea of just putting a leveling kit on it. But I’m curious what you got?
I replaced the air suspension with non-air front torsion bars and set the adjusters about 2” higher then before and at first added 2” coil spacers with stock springs in the back. As it sits now I got custom rear springs made to handle more weight in the back that replace the spacer/stock spring set up.
Looks awesome. I have a 2000 EB 4x4 with a 5.4. A couple of questions. The PO replaced the air suspension with coil and spring. I find that she's a little low in the back and have ordered manually inflatable Firestone Airbags for the rear. What do you think? Also, your running boards are much nicer than the stock plastic ones. Where did you get those and how difficult to install them? I think the first gen Expedition is greatly underappreciated! I had one, got an Excursion, and went back to the Expedition!
Thanks! I am seeing my rear springs loose lift so I bought some custom heavier springs and will install soon. I'm running Supreme Suspension 2" lift blocks and they have worked perfectly, maybe try that? I made the running board/rock rails and welded the rails to the stock running board brackets. They have taken some hits and one is just slightly bent but did their job.
The company is call “Coil Spring Specialties” in Kansas. I’m very happy with them, with shipping they came in at $420. I’m working with them for a set for my Bronco, they will make anything you want.
I've seen probably all your videos on this rig. Just a couple questions for you. I have a 01 navigator I've replaced the air suspension with coil overs and springs installed supreme suspension 2in spacers on the rear and replaced torsion keys for 3 to 4in torsion lift this gave me plenty room for the 315/70/17 tires I did still have to trim running boards for turning clearance and also added 2in wheel spacers for the factory rims. Did you remove the sway bars for better articulation if so how well does it handle
Thanks for watching, I’m glad it was helpful. I too replaced the air suspension. I got a set of torsion bars from a non-air Expedition from Pull and Save and used stock keys, if you find your ride is bouncy or seems to spring back more quickly then is comfortable then the smaller air torsion bars may be twisted too much to get lift and that stored energy is why. Yes I did remove my swaybar in the front but not the rear. I found in past builds that if you keep the rear bar you still get front articulation but still some sway control on the road. Off road is 100 percent better without the bar. Just remember that without that bar it can become a problem on road in an quick lane change event. That being said I even pulled my 5000 pound trailer that way and just kept the speed down and did fine. I’d love to see you rig, do you have a link?
Hey, I have the same year lincoln navigator and was thinking of bringing a wrench to disconnect sway bars when I hit the trails. Have you experimented with disconnecting the sway bars on yours?
I have a 2017 Expedition and I just picked up a 1998 for an overland build! I need one of those rear bumper setups lol! Also did I spot a winch mount up front? Which mount is that?
The best thing overlanding with the Expedition is sleeping in the back with a huge mattress, just did a 1700 miles trip from Denver to Santa Fe to Sedona then Moab and back to Denver. The winch mount is a Warn 34701, I removed the lower bumper valance and flipped the mounting brackets to mount it high and worked perfect. I had to do some trimming to be able to plug the cable in but no big deal. I can build you a bumper (and sliders), if you are serious send me a message at rockymtnbroncos@aol.com The cost will be as cheap as I can (there is about $200 of steel, $150 in the hinge and latch, about 10 hours of labor) as I'm building bumpers for Broncos and this is a product with a small group willing to pay. I would love to see your build and will give as much help as I can.
@@starksexpeditions121 I was actually thinking about it I'm in the process of restoring it I have the paint and inside to redo if I post a video it would be on my other channel not this one but if you're really curious to see it now I could show you do you have Instagram or something like that by chance?
Yes just like a GM, I've done this on many different Fords and never used a new key. I guess if the torsion bar is so wore out the bolt won't be long enough so the key rotates the bar some in the index to help with that. Thanks for watching.
I'm trying to figure out the right tire size for a 2015 gen3 Expedition with stock 18" wheels. I would use ReadyLift lift kit to get the clearance. I don't understand the offset to use. Or if I would need to change it from stock. Does anyone have any suggestions for the tire size needed for this? Stock tires are 275/65R18s
I’ve seen lots of pics of that year with bigger tires. I’m not 100 percent sure on that year but they are 0 off set. Meaning the backspacing is in the center of the width. This is the best for suspension geometry and bearing life. Most tire shops will tell you what the upsize tire size is. F150s use the same wheels so many choices out there.
I used stock length shocks. I converted from air ride to coil and standard torsion bars. I didn’t lift too much in the front so rides almost like stock.
Those are some of the heaviest stock wheels that Ford offered at the time. Oh and hub centric rings exist for aftermarket wheels for this and other reasons. The truck looks great though.
You can do a torsion twist in the front to get an inch or two, I ran 2” rear spacers until I changed to lift coils. I have those spacers if you want them.
@@starksexpeditions121 Greetings from Russia! I live beyond the Arctic Circle, in the Murmansk region. BF Goodrich AT-simply unique wheels! They are good at any time of the year! Thank you to the USA for such high-quality things as such tires and such cars! I hope that relations between our countries will get better soon!
I built one recently for a customer, the cost was $2000 and shipping was over $600 from Denver to Portland. Steel costs are really high but I can make you one.
Just found this. Nice rig. I have a 99 expedition. When I took the wheels off of my F150 (same as yours), I downsized to a BFGoodRich 265. I had 285's and sort of wish I would have went with that size, but I was in too much of a hurry for new tires and the 265's were in stock. I also have the 2" blocks in the rear and found some beefier springs to help stiffen up the rear end, then 4 full turns of each torsion bar in the front to get the 1.5 to 2" lift there. You can see it here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w5iYzXOTJYA.html
It was Auto 4x4 but I did the brown wire mod to keep it from auto engaging. I got a good deal on it because it was engaging all the time, the owner didn’t want to fix. I drove it home and cut the wire and it’s been work fine ever since. That’s does make the dash 4x4 light flash but all works.
