Imagine you knew nothing about Bruce Springsteen, never heard a single song. You just see this amazing, beautiful human being. But later, in your head, out of nowhere, melodies and words arise. And then you hear Thunderroad or State Trooper for the first time. And it all makes sense. With eyes wide open, humble, through his mind and voice the spirit of music is alive for all of us.
In the city where I live, there's a fairly popular art museum that would do free admission on the first Friday of the month (before Covid). I used to like looking at a painting for a little it and then saying to no one in particular, "This is what salvation must be like after a while." Nobody ever seemed to get the reference. Bah.
I definitely listened to this as an album, I’ve been working to it the last two days. Love it. How lucky are we that one of the few enduring icons of music left to us still has things to say?
Great interview between two legends! I’ve seen Bruce more than 25 times. Each time was an enlightening and energising experience. Really looking forward to hearing those songs he wrote years ago
Two legends? Colbert went out of his way to encourage COVID vaccines...and shamed those who stayed unvaccinated...Steven, why did you do that? Are you so clueless about the medical industrial complex? 3 Noble Prize winners supported the policy of staying unvaccinated...he has no business being in the company of Springsteen...
Colbert a legend on a par with Bruce? Colbert is a puppet , does and says what he is told, like shaming people who refused to take an experimental harmful "vaccine".....Dick Cavett, Mike Douglas, Tommy Smothers yes THEY are legends....But Colbert? He should not be allowed to shine Bruce's shoes.
I think Bruce's description of your life as a car containing all the previous versions of you is very true. As someone who is 2 years older than Bruce, I recognise the analogy and the fact that sometimes it's the earlier version who's driving. This is especially bad when my early 30s incarnation is at the wheel. I wasn't very pleasant then. Age tells you that you might give that person some slack.
i cannot for the life of me understand why some people like changing of the guards so much. street legal is very underrated, but that lead track just doesn't do much for me. the repetitive theme is off-putting
@@dice1296 I'm not a huge fan of the arrangement, but the lyrics are among his best ever. Patti Smith's version is amazing as well, if not better than the original.
Looks like they dropped Bruce into Rick Beato's studio. What a good analogy about the different yous in the car; "it depends who is at the wheel at the moment".
I can remember back in the 70's or so when every, and I mean EVERY new male singer/songwriter was hailed as 'the new Dylan'. Don McLean with 'American Pie' . Leonard Cohen, oddly, with his third album 'Songs of Love and Hate'. Springsteen, of course. And I must say that I just knew, absolutely knew that 'Visions of Johanna' would be a top pick for Bruce. Songwriters tend to name it the greatest song ever written if forced to do so. I fell in love with it when the album first came out even though I had absolutely no idea what the hell it was about and really didn't get for at least a decade. But I was entranced by the words and didn't care.
And if we ever meet again, baby remember me. How my lone guitar played sweet for you that old -time melody. And the harmonica around my neck, I blew it for you free, no one else could play that tune, you know it was up to me- Up To Me

It’s hilarious but when they asked him his favourite line I was thinking exactly that ‘once upon a time......’ lol.
Have to go with Like a Rolling Stone; Positively 4th St & Tangled up in Blue--Favorite line---to paraphrase---I wish for just one time you could stand inside my shoes and just for that one moment I could be you, then you'd know what a drag it is to see you
*12 Days till Nov 3! tik tok tik tok tik tok! America's coming for you trumppeee! Time is flying! Vote Biden/Harris! Vote Democrat! Vote for Democracy, Decency & Justice! Vote!*
Lana Del Rey is just wonderful. Love NFR as well as everything else. Listen all the way through. But, I play vinyl so have you do that for all the records I own!
So right...listening to a vinyl album, especially when you'd just got it from a record store, was an event! While it was playing you'd read the liner notes, look at the album art! It was the whole package .... nowadays you have "playlists" on your phone that fill the background... some of the magic is gone
My choices: Blowin in the Wind, The Times They Are A'changin, If You See Her Say Hello, Don't Think Twice It's Alright, It's Ain't Me Babe, Love Minus Zero, One More Cup of Coffee, All Along The Watch Tower, The Hurricane, Shelter From The Storm, Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, and Jokerman.
I'd be honored if some Springsteen fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performance DANCING IN THE DARK on my YT channel in tribute to the continuing relevance of this legendary American classic. Live acoustic with no autotune. Peace and vote 'D' for Decency on Nov. 3rd.
So was Petty. I just don't want him to be forgotten. I think if you don't listen to the richness of other voices in music and words you can't achieve the caliber of artistry these guys did.
Ignore the polls and trolls! Vote too big to rig! Vote country over party! Vote too save democracy in America! 🇺🇸🇺🇸Biden/Harris 2020 TRACK YOUR BALLOT!
Absolutely! And the version from Cardiff is the best I’ve ever heard. Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowland and Up To Me are my favorite BD tunes, but Visions of Johanna is is definitely top 5
Interesting observation! Never thought about it. Charlie Rose turned into mush when interviewing media celebs which was a black mark against him in my books; I think Stephen in a healthy way is just a big fan which is great.

Bruce was a good friend to Warren Zevon and helped Warren finish his last album when he was getting too weak. Bruce drove through a storm to Warren's house on Christmas eve to help him out on the last song. So freaking sweet. He also does Warren songs in his concerts.... so that's why I love Bruce.
7:00 Guys, BIG album suggestion: Norman Fucking Rockwell The he song “the greatest” talks about nostalgia and our modern zeitgeist on how things don’t feel the same as before I recommend all the album
I had just turned 13 and was beginning to be able to scrape up enough money to start buying albums instead of 45's the summer Born to Run was released. It was one of my very first purchases and I bought it on the strength of the title track. The rest, needless to say, did not disappoint.
Piled the gang in my Pontiac wagon Springsteen tickets Boston Garden! Getting high on Bruce with our trust in that V8 Gang singing Born to Run sounded f****** great! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k47YSvzv8vE.html
Okay Dylan’s Highway 61 has to be the best opening verse of any song ever: “God said to Abraham, kill me a son... Abe says man you must be putting me on... God says no Abe says what... God says you can do what you want to, but the next time you see me coming you better run... Abe says where you want this killin’ done... God says out on highway 61” Everything that’s wrong with the world in one verse...incredible!
Speaking of Dylan lyrics, one line that I've thought about this past year is from "Sweetheart Like You". "Patriotism is the last refuge to which a scoundrel clings." It reminds me of a certain someone we all know.
No question Dylan is the consummate surrealist poet. Mr Tamborine Man taken up by The Byrds has to be part of our public shared musical landmarks. He has inspired so many great artists justifiably, but he's not God and had some seriously shitty periods and I would hate to have him for a father, don't know how Jacob Dylan turned out to be such a sane brilliant musician In His Own Write to quote John .Lennon.
Bruce has got it all - great musician, great songwriter, great lyricist & great singer. But somehow he never takes himself too seriously. Utterly unique.
My mom and dad had a ritual, every night my dad would turn the light off and they’d listen to “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” on the record player. My favorite Bob Dylan song isn’t well known, it’s “To Ramona”. It helped me with so many events and relationships in my life. I love all his music though.
I like his analogy of a band being like a ship. Very true. And his bit about the car with "all the yous" is the best description of life experience. A smart man, and a great story teller. I think he qualifies for Dolly Parton's title of "Storyteller".
i love how regularly he praises lana, in fact she's also repeatedly praised springsteen throughout her career which many know and is beautiful. legends appreciating each other.
Love his metaphor - having himself in a car - the 23 year old, the 40 year old, and all versions of himself - and having the 70 year old now giving voice to all of his selves. Not bragging but I was named after visions of Johanna. 💕
First, seeing John B. at the beginning or end of a video always makes me smile. He is truly a joyous human being. Second, I don't always love celebrity interviews. Maybe not popular to say, but it's true. I LOVED your interview with Bruce Springsteen. It was great. (So was Dolly Parton)
My fav Dylan song is You're a Big Girl Now" of Blood on the Tracks. Also Positively 4th Street, Most likely to go Your Way" (Then the time will tell Who has fell And who's been left behind When you go your way and I go mine. The judge, he's holds a grudge And he's about to call on you But he's badly built and he walks on stilts Watch out he don't fall on you
I would have to pick the "hurricane" as my favorite Dylan song, I imagine Bruce would approve ? I feel like I have known Bruce since my 1970s HS days. He's important to me, no other way to put it.
Well it would tie in with their shared political conscience, so yeah. I also grew up with his music since the '70s so I get it; just don't want to one of those guys who say to people who have just discovered something, well I was there at the beginning so I have special rights which in no way are you saying at all! Great comment.
How do you rate Dylan‘s greatest songs? He’s written more great songs than anyone. Three of my my favorites, but I could easily write 50... Every Grain of Sand Blind Willie McTell Sweetheart Like You
I adore that song! In fact I adore that whole album. The only two Dylan albums that probably surpass it for me are Blood on the Tracks and Blonde on Blonde. Bringing it all Back Home is also really high on the list.
Best lines: As the mornin’ light breaks open, the Greek comes down And he asks for a rope and a pen that will write “Pardon, monsieur,” the desk clerk says Carefully removes his fez “Am I hearin’ you right?”
