Learn about the Presidium Gem Tester and whether it can distinguish real vs fake jade jewelry.
*QUICK NOTES*
• The PGT II in this video was brand new, properly calibrated, and used correctly (the probe was depressed fully) with a clean probe according to manufacturer's instructions. The gems were adjusted to the room's temperature and held still, most gems having been previously tested in a gemological lab (the only exception being some nephrite pieces.) The reading was taken when the needle stopped moving, with consideration given to the needle's highest point.
• While some of the readings were accurate, the PGT II misidentified common jade simulants (aventurine and agate) as jadeite. The PGT II also misidentified nephrite as jadeite. The PGT II did not give a clear reading on multiple jadeite jade and quartz pieces. This is especially important because quartz is the most common simulant of jadeite jade.
• While the readings of the serpentine and Maw Sit Sit specimens are interesting, in my professional opinion I don't think these give an accurate view of the tester's ability -- as it's honestly pretty unfair to test gems that aren't on the gem identification display. I literally only included it because I thought it was interesting.
• This video is not meant to disparage Presidium. It is an honest review where I show you exactly what I tested and what results I got. As mentioned in the video, perhaps the PGT II is better used on faceted gemstones. However, as with any gemological instrument, it's not enough on it's own to conclusively identify any gemstone. Other testing, as well as visual examination and experience, are needed for proper gem identification.
• If you're looking to have your jade professionally tested (as there are no reliable ways to conclusively test jade at home if you don't have experience with the stone), consider visiting your local independent jeweler. If you want to have your jadeite jade tested for the presence of polymer-impregnation, you or your jewelry store can send your stone to Mason-Kay.

Hi Jordan. If the refractometer can't tell if the stone has been treated or dyed. What tests do they do to determine that?
@JewelsoftheTrade
@JewelsoftheTrade 2 месяца назад
@@MTUnique I actually had a long section about this in the original edit of the video, but I took it out because I thought it was too boring 😂 Maybe I was wrong, haha. Dye can be detected using a handheld diffraction spectroscope, but polymer/wax/resin impregnation is detected using a spectrometer - a tabletop laser that interprets non-visible spectra using a computer program. Those machines typically cost ~$30k 😱

Oh wow. So that's why it costs so much to have it tested, authenticated, and certified. They provide a service that is hard to get without a lot of money invested. I have stones that I want to send in and get tested but it's a gamble that they'll be worth the money to test.

@@MTUniqueGIA usually costs more than a smaller company like Mason-Kay. At Mason-Kay, they ask you to send photos first so they can help you determine if the pieces are worth having tested. Sometimes, treated jade can look very obvious. But if the specimen looks natural, it almost has to be tested to know for sure. Some treatments look veeeery good, unfortunately

Thank you for watching my product review of the PGT II. Were you surprised by the results?

the only surprise is price. seems to do the same function as those 3 dollar gem tester sticks from china, reading thermal conductivity calculating it into a approximately correct number on mohs scale.

For $300 you don’t even get the exact gem name from the reader? Not worth it.
@goldsilverandiamonds

Definitely worth it in certain buying situations. Where sellers are not aware of the stones value. It can pay of itself in one test. Many sellers don't care about gemstone values.
