And don't worry about me not knowing enough of rockets or killing myself with the big thing. We have some help from local university space technology club with doing some math things, controller stuff etc. I just make the big dumb parts and take care of costs.

+nobody's shadow I'm sure it's designed so that wouldn't happen. I doubt that plastic is going to burn too easily. Plus the oxygen is moving out of any opening in the tube, I don't see a flame traveling up the tube against the flow of oxygen.

You need to do a sequel and demonstrate some of the rocket fuels I've proposed on Twitter - I'm pretty sure Bacon and Lego fuels would work (with casing & nozzle). And if you advance to liquid fuel, you can freeze distill things like Vodka to make it strong enough to work as a fuel.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but what you haven't made a rocket motor. What you've made instead is a " Pulse Jet Engine" . It's the same as powered the "buzz bombs" of WWII. In fact, you see it (and hear it) best with the playdo versions. These work by vaporizing fuel in an air flow. You can see it in the exhaust flame. You can also hear the signature "Buzz" too !

@gohunt001-5
@gohunt001-5 7 лет назад
Uki Malefu sugar is glucose and iirc it's actually flammable (is it glucose? and is it flammable? not sure. someone's gonna have to confirm/correct me on that) vodka has alcohol in it, and alcohol is flammable. however, it's a liquid, so lauri's gonna have to make a liquid fuel rocket engine (or freeze the vodka, though i don't think that's gonna make much of a difference) bacon has a lot of fat, and fat is flammable, so that might work. how to turn it into solid rocket fuel, however, i have no idea. someone has to do some finnish engineering. manure is flammable because it has microbes that make methane, which is flammable. although it wouldn't be classified as a solid rocket engine more so than a gas rocket engine. or can it be called a solid-gaseous rocket engine? interesting...

Gohunt001 - The Mythbusters made solid rocket fuel out of gummi bears and another out of poop. Both were tested and very successful, so it is possible.
@Glyxis.
@Glyxis. 7 лет назад
The myth was just plausible with modified fueling system and the final amount of gummy bear powder and poop powder (Poop powder, I thought that I'd never use a such word, lol) was SO small in the final product, that you could actually use ANY powder like material (which has some energy to burn) with that fueling system. So. As its normal state, there's no way.

One thing that I think should work quite well: Bacon rocket fuel. Wrap some bacon around a stick, dry it in the oven, wrap some more bacon around that and dry it, until you have a sufficient thickness, and then light it up with oxygen. Or, alternatively, just drill a hole into a sufficiently thick and strong sausage.

@avlehtine

Half of those words are two words combined into one (as we do in Finnish) like sidosaine = binding agent and kookosvoi = coconut butter. So they are really shorter than in english.
@Hawester
@Hawester 7 лет назад
What I said was, they should press a tight cylinder from potato chips and use it as fuel. The high value of energy in the chips should be seen as good burning. If the cylinder doesn't hold up, some kind of binding agent such as coconut butter might help for it.
@Pyovali

The funny part.....on the 2nd test. The pulsing of the flame is actually reversion which means you were getting favorable oxidizer mass flux for a moment and building pressure then it was dropping then building over and over. Thats a key aspect to developing a combustion flame front in a hybrid motor. :-) Hint, if you had a flame holder, it would have been better. Though, it would have generated head end pressure and popped the O2 lead out of the top.

Instead of a gas oxidizer. Build a liquid containment vessel. And use hydrogen peroxide. Through a metered orifice. Adjustable orifice to achieve maximum thrust. Also, try using magnesium shavings as the solid fuel. Then metering the peroxide is not as critical. A 13.5mm nozzle created a 10hp thrust for me. Several hundred foot launch. The white magnesium exhaust is spectacular! 😉👍

What you really need to do is to find a way to measure the thrust you´re getting. Its obviously not much since its not going anywhere, but the difference between burning oxidizer and a rocket is that a rocket develops more thrust than the oxidizer alone. Something like a plate suspended by wires underneath the nozzle, that the blast pushes out of the way would work, or a spinny wheel with a speedometer on it. As for different rocket fuels to test- The Mythbusters successfully tested a salami rocket once. Perhaps other sausages would work just as well.
@Graeme408
