Square Enix had a massive clearance on their online store back in 2018. I bought a copy of every ps1 reprint they they had. It was bizarre even then that you could still buy new copies of ps1 games. Oh, and they also were selling DS games, I picked up Dragon Quest Monsters for like $10-20 bucks. Unfortunately the main line Dragon Quest game were already sold out.

Regarding the black disks, it's been speculated that what they mean by "anti-piracy" is it means you can tell at a glance that it's a pirate copy so you're not fooled. Of course, they could also have just been lying.

Sounds about right, to differentiate their product. It was already known that the color thing was a gimmick. There were black Cd-r's you could buy from Memorex. I still have a few lying around. As for copying games then, you just needed a "Gold Finger" plugged into your expansion port and a spring to keep lid switch from making the disk spin backup. Make a good dupe (which took time) and you were good to go. Still got the occasional coaster but it was 1997 and all of this relatively easy copying was still new at the time.
@thelastmotel

The black layer was to hide the deliberately damaged disc tracks. If you were an early PS1 pirate, using the two lego heads / blutac method of disc swapping, you knew all about this, which is why games like Cyber Sled, which had the maximum number of intact tracks possible on a PS1 game, were so desirable for your original swap disc.

It was wild buying brand new, GOOD PS1 games directly from them for anywhere from $4-10. VideoGamesPlus orders the reprints themselves from the Publisher. A good example is when they ended the upward price trajectory of Infinite Space for the DS, one of the more expensive and desirable games for it at the time. It didn't get a huge production run in the west and it was made by Platinum Games, who were on the top of their game at the time. When VGP announced the reprint in March 2016, sealed prices on eBay were at their peak of US$107. By the release in May, prices had slumped to US$65.99 and would drop further to US$44.99 by July 2017. It took until 2021 for the values to recover to 2016 levels. Those prices don't seem like much, but this is arguably when DS game prices were at their lowest. You could find complete in box copies of Dragon Quest V for $15 all day long; it doesn't go for less than US$180 today.

@@BurritoKingdom The first two Persona games are still incredibly expensive. Much more so, in fact. Most decent RPG’s not published by Square Soft/Square Enix are that way. Expect to pay close to $70-$80 for a mid-tier RPG, $120-$150 for one that’s halfway decent, and $250-$400 for one that’s either rare, or has a cult following. Seriously, I don’t know a single person who gives a hoot and a half about Lunar: Silver Star Story, but it’s around $150, and it’s sequel is even more. Companies will not keep their servers open to download games indefinitely, there will come a time that digital game collections worth thousands will perish. I don’t expect Sony or Nintendo to support downloading PS3 or DS games past 2035, but I’ll always have the console and disks in a “dumb” capacity, even if completely offline. It’s just a matter of whether the disks can hold up that long. I’m probably a very stubborn minority, but I wouldn’t bother buying many games if they’re all digital. Maybe 2-3 a year, like Red Dead & GTA, can’t miss games. I can’t imagine I’d dump much money into games I can’t resell. Those aren’t very rare though. The PS2 lasted way too long, so they steered removing the memory card slot from games around ‘07 or ‘08. There were still major games, such as Persona 4, which released after this and thus have no variant WITH a memory card slot. It’s not very rare. Granted, later PS2 games still did come in cheaper cases, but it’s a lot less interesting than the topic in this video.

Most of these old games are available on steam and such nowadays, or right on the ps3/4/5 online store, or even your phone as an app! the pluses is that its far easier to relive these golden era games, and it often comes with big perks like faster load times, faster movement speed in game, slight visual enhancements, and additional stuff that the original release didn't have. I got chrono trigger on steam last year and replayed it for a couple months going through various endings, not sure if I even finished all of them. And then I went to the endgame stuff in that reptile kingdom or whatever- all brand new to me, never got to experience that with the snes. Very enjoyable! There is something about the sense of nostalgia you get playing the game as you remember on release- in its original form, with the original controller and console. But lately it just feels more and more like a pain trying to achieve that little bit more of nostalgia. Modern TVs do Not play SNES / NES / 64 / PS1 / PS2 and such Easily. You have to find adapter cables to convert to the only port available- HDMI, troubleshoot, and stare at your big screen with big black bars on the sides or top and bottom and even then you question if the aspect isn't cutting anything out. All that headache is gone when you just get a digital 'remaster' copy. Really worth it. That said, I do understand they don't have this treatment for Many old school games, but if you like Square old school RPGs- its likely been done a thousand times.

I worked at a Walmart in the early 2010s and at one point we got a shipment of some old games that needed to be moved and were placed in a clearance bin in the aisle in front of electronics. It was about 50 original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. All of them seemed to be Disney titles. We had them priced at $8.44 each but not many of them sold. Dunno whatever happened to the unsold copies. I bought one of them - Mickey's Racing Adventure - since my neighbor had that game when I was a kid and I remembered playing it a lot. I've still got it. :)

Reprints of retro games is pretty common anymore. A new PC Engine game was recently released, tons of new games get released on old consoles, and Battletoads and Double Dragons was reprinted last year with The Wily Wars not long before that iirc. These are basically reprints, which makes sense considering Squenix sells on these games digitally on console and PC and push rereleased pretty heavily (as they should, makes preservation and playing them in general a lot easier lol)

I sell a lot on eBay and it is correct to check sold listings to give you an idea of an accurate going rate. Once you have an idea of what something is reliably selling for you have the option of sorting from lowest price to highest then seeing if you can find anything (remember the best deals sell fast), or playing the wait game and periodically checking the site for the game you want and filtering for newest listed. I have gotten so many gamecube games for a fraction of the average selling price, let alone the top dollar values a lot of sellers ask. Example; Luigis mansion I got for $38, and it will sell for $60-$75ish consistently. And sending best offers is always worth a shot, I naturally price things up a little bit to account for the crap ton of fees we get and the fact a lot of people like to negotiate. I wouldn't waste time on sellers who have say a $100 game marked up to $170 or something wild since they are clearly out of their mind, but someone who has a game that sells typically for $80 and they have it marked at $90 you may be able to get them to down to $75. Hit them with an amount that isn't insulting first and go up from there. (to give perspective, if I sell a $50 game, I am only gonna make around $30 (fees/shipping/taxes/misc), and that is assuming I didn't pay much or anything for it.)

Chrono Trigger on SNES is the only repro cart I have in my collection. Somehow embarrassingly even having grown up in the SNES era and playing several RPG's, Chrono Trigger was always that game I would get around to someday. Finally after finding out a buddy of mine also had never played through it, we decided to play and stream on our twitch channel. I pretty much insist on playing on original hardware but just couldn't justify the crazy price for the cart. The first thing I did upon getting the game is writing repro in huge black marker all over the cart. I'd hate anyone to ever get confused and would never try to pass off a repro as anything but. I'm still conflicted about having it in my collection.

The thing that sucks with videos like this is a ton of scumbags see it and buy a shitload to resell, intentionally selling them out. I guarantee 90%+ of the people who bought them don't even own a ps1 and purely got them because it's shown how expensive originals are on ebay, so that they can resell it. In a week there will be like 100 on ebay. They do the same shit with vinyl, and they fuck up the whole industry. Worst thing is the genuine fans that love quare Enix enough to go to their site don't get to buy them because people who don't even like final fantasy bought 10 a piece. These could have been in stock for over a year+, now sold out in a day. And if they don't make more these fippere will make a bunch of money. People will be compelled to buy this game just because of the video, paying 5x the price it's worth. And the genuine fan gets screwed over where they're paying these ridiculous prices so they can complete a set. It genuinely sucks that this happens with so many industries today. Games, vinyl, shoes, even books, clothes, toys, stuffed animals. It's like the beanie baby craze on steroids due to ebay, bots, people's getting into flipping in the pandemic, fomo, and pack/mob behavior. So just like beanie babies where the kids are not able to have a limited stuffed animal due to adults buying them all to sell for profit, these flippers buy everything keeping the actual fans with nothing unless they pay greedy rididiculous prices far above retail. But because wealthy ones buy them people start thinking that's the actual value when it's vastly inflated. The company then prints a shitload due to seeing this false demand from resellers. Which drops the price back down, screwing those who bought from flippers. But even worse the company doesn't know the true demand, thinking it's much more than it is, so they print way too many which leads to them loosing a ton of money. Because once so many are made the flippers and group followers don't buy more since it was only due to this video, leaving only the small amount of dedicated fans to buy them which leads to a large loss since they end up with way too many copies with no one to sell them to. And they can even think the demand is so high where they raise the price significantly so fans are stuck paying a higher retail so even less people buy it. An example of this is there's a reddit vinyl buying group who all obsessively started buying OK computer due to group mentality even though it wasn't even that rare. Every single online store was posted, like 20 a day, even obscure local stores and would sell out over and over until they changed the fricken MSRP due to the demand. Well then they print alot and everyone moved on where now there's like 20 at every small store on sale due to it not being as extreme of a demand as it appeared. Same now with smashing pumpkins. So the local store buys too many due to this false flipping demand and loses money. Same with an oasis restock where some asshole bought like 50 of each rare pressing making thousands before other fans can get them, yet thought he was being kind by making a blog recommending it once it all sold out. So while this video is cool it's effects suck. The people who care to actually play these games and value them get screwed, as lazy jetkd benefit. It's messed up the greed and hoard cumpulsion of people since I guarantee a vast majority of buyers dont even have a ps1 nor play it, with a ton probably buying multiple. When it coulda been in stock for all those people who still play ps1 religiously or final fantasy fans. Now future fans miss out as well, when it should have been a cool thing to find for those who will actually play them. It's sad that this happens it's like toxic capitalism and hoarding which is why we can't have nice things.
