Can You Swap PS5 Slim Disc Drives? The PS5 "Slim" features removable disc drives. But that doesn't necessarily mean they're interchangeable. So I bought 2 consoles to see if I can swap the drive after it's been registered.

That’s all well and good until the day comes where you can’t connect to the servers that allow the disc drive to work. This is great for short term repairs but long-term it’s terrible that it requires internet.

I love this. Not only does it make repairability better, but that also means you can lend your disc drive out with a game to your friends without causing any issue. Love how easy it is to install/remove the disc drive too.

Other interesting tests: - With the drive removed, factory reset, log in with PSN, then install the drive with no internet access. - Add a second PSN account with the drive removed, remove the first PSN account and then install the drive.

Nice and informative video. Sony did a smart move on this,because you can just buy another drive and replace it without any problems. Even replacing or upgrading a SSD is super easy,they built this components like LEGO. Your videos are amazing and super interesting to watch,continue with good work!

It may sound Repair Freindly at first glance but the truth is; u literally need internet to pair the disc drive with ur console meaning that when sony decides to pull the plug on the PS5 servers the PS5 slim becomes E waste and thats sth that we as repair enthusiasts don't want to see happening

So there is some benefit to this. If you bought multiple digital consoles for your house and only one disc drive, you can move it as needed. That seems somewhat useful.

Yeah, that is a very serious issue, potentially. I know Sony isn't going anywhere for now, but who knows what happens in the future and relying on server check to use such a basic feature as a disc drive seems like a really disappointing decision.

For a console that will likely sell 100 million, that server is gonna be up even 20 years from now, probably forever. And they will patch that out when the PS5 lifespan ends like they did with the PS4's CMOS battery replacement situation. Additionally, the PS5 console would be cracked in the future.

The Issue isn't swapping so much as it is when the service inevitably ends and you can't re-register the drive with another console making the drive functionally dead without PSN service to register it.

That isn't gonna happen.. Sony will definitely patch that out way before that happens. They did with the PS4 and the replacing of the CMOS battery. And even with that, you can still connect to update firmware. Additionally, even though the Wii shop died ages ago, you can still redownload Wii games you bought. And even if your worst nightmare comes to pass let's say 50 years from now, the PS5 would have been cracked by then.

That Unregister option, made me nervous at first. Because if that was the only option to move a drive to another system, that would have been very dumb. After all you wanna make sure that you can reuse a drive of a ps5 where the mainboard has died. Glad it does work after all.

Registering the disc drive is basically just a simple handshake. That allows the Ps5 system to recognise if you attach the actual disc drive rather than attaching a pirated one made my third party companies. I’m just glad its a one time register.

This is why I just waved it off when they started freaking out about the registering disk drive stuff. They were panicking and saying that Sony is locking down the PlayStation. Sony only did that because there was some laws they had to skate around

@@MathiasVen Sony has been marrying this drives to consoles for a while now. They had to do what they just did because some regulations. I can't remember where. The online authentication just marries the disk drive to the motherboard. That's it. It's only required when originally setting up the PlayStation. Probably the only time this would ever be an issue is if the authentication servers were down in the future and you had to do a SSD swap on a PlayStation 5. By time that comes around people will already figure that out. People have figured out how to get past the PlayStation 4s disc drive. Heck. People figured out the encryption on the PS3. This is no different. There's nothing to worry about.

I'm wondering if you can use disc drives from different regions 🤔 Yes I know games are region free. . But for those who still use Blu-Ray movies, can you install a US Region A disc drive on a UK machine (which would be a Region B drive) and it will still work?

4K Blu-rays are actually region free for the most part, only HD Blu-rays are region locked.

now I get why the disc drive needs to be registered online.. because the latest jailbreak or hacking of PS5 came to a bug exploit in the BD-Drive.. so Sony's answer to prevent furthermore hacking is to force your console registering online by updating the firmware so you can update your disc drive.. this video is so helpful that swapping BD-drive will trigger the console to go online again so it can patched up any potential exploits

FUN FACT: We can only register these disk drives as long as Sony keeps the dedicated authentication servers up. Its unlikely that Sony will patch that out when the time comes. Since they will rather have people buy a new game console instead. And not have them play on a legacy console. I guess that's the plan. IMO, buying a PS5 Slim is a bad long term investment

I wonder if by registering they mean “make the OS aware it’s there” (good), or “register it on their servers with a bunch of serial numbers and silliness” (bad). Just making them swappable is a benefit to Sony. There’s very little to try to gain from anything and the goodwill is big and helpful.

Reminds me of back in the day bringing a game to a friends house to play together. Now I can bring my disk drive to a friends house to play disc games. Then bring it back home and it works without having to re-register. And can repeat anytime with no issues. I hope Sony leaves it alone. I know it doesn’t sound like a big deal but to some it’s super convenient.

My guess is that your disc drive model number gets uploaded to the servers with the ps5 number it's paired with, so that it stays in the server memory. If this is the case, it explains why it skips the register screen as the ps5's number has been checked.

If you can register mutiple disk drives to a single ps5 slim console, means you can hold on to 1 extra drive or mutiple and never have to use their servers because you have a few drives on hand. Sure 80 dollars x2 or x3 is pricy. But for those that are afraid of losing physical games its an investment.

So apparently the drive isn't locked or bonded to the console but it's only the PS5 that stores registration info. You can (so it seems) attach a given drive to multiple PS5s and those only have to register it once when first connected. Afterwards the console will remember and recognize a drive that had already been connected to it.

I'm glad you can hook it to multiple consoles. I just wish the network connection wasn't necessary. I know it's only a minor inconvenience now, but it could be an issue in the future when the system is no longer supported. I just find it unnecessary as it's something that was completely doable without the connection.

I'm really surprised. I would have thought Sony would have locked it to the system it was first registered to make you buy another one. That's really cool they didn't/haven't yet. I'm sure, at this point, they just want to know what system it's registered to so if you make any "questionable" uses with the drive they can follow the trail back to that system.

The fact that it ask for an internet connection need to be updated, and it has an unregister-register mechanics are red sign that in the future PS may change the compatibility to their favour. While their answer is that they are doing it to stop third party non-affiliated manufacturers to start making their own, in reality it could kill the console value when it hits the second hand market, especially as a collector or "retro" item. The sample in the video is of 2 units, for understandable reasons. I hope later down the line there's a re-test when there's more units and spare parts available from donor units.

So for large families who you want to get more than once console for could potentially just get one optical drive PS5 and then purchase digital version for other members of the family saving a little bit of cash but have ability if needed to read any disk based games thats pretty cool hopefully something like this carries over to next gen for all manufacturers

You're saying families are buying MULTIPLE several hundred dollar game consoles now? My god, I had to work to buy my own Atari 2600 and Nintendo (nes) lol. Now your claiming some are buying even more than one, much more expensive systems for the kids? Amazing.

this, on the other hand, means that people now may have a reason to get the disk-less PS5 if they already own a disk-version slim, since they only need 1 per household if they can freely swap the drives between units on demand.

I don't think the question is "How many PS5's you can register one disc drive to" but rather "How many disc drives can you register to a PS5 Slim. I'm thinking it registers the device ID on the PS5, not the other way around. So there might be a finite number of registry entries it has for drives.

so, the registration is only on your local console and if you do a factory reset you can choose to cancel the disc drive registration or not and this is bad for preservation. In fact, if in the future, when ps5 will be discontinued and Sony will shuts down ps5 server, could be not possible activate disc drive. But this is a future problem

So a friend could borrow my disc drive to play a disc game while I play a downloaded game, then give it back no problem. Thats great!

All good except for that part with the factory reset unregistering the drive (that you would supposedly never ever take out). I mean, what if... let's say... 200 years from now you decide to factory reset your ps5, you lose the ability to use your drive with your "rare" disc collection. "You (not we) will own nothing and you'll be happy 😊", that's the future.

I hope that when Sony releases the PS5 Pro, we will still be able to use these disc drive units on the Pro. Also, I mean, the PS5 Pro will need to have a similar style/design shape to accommodate this disc drive from the Slim.
