Can You Tell a Christian by Looking at Them? - J.D. Greear versus Bob Wilkin

J.D. Greear while explaining James 2:1-13 teaches that Christians are recognizable by visible differences in their behavior. Bob Wilkin of the Grace Evangelical Church examines whether the Bible teaches this or does instead the Bible teach that Christians can behave like "mere men" (1 Corinthians 2:14-3:3). Bob explains the true meaning of James 2:13 and explains how we can have everlasting life (John 3:16).

I came to understand that the know them by their fruits verse is talking about false prophets and their false messages. So if someone is say, street preaching, and they say, "stop sinning in order to be saved", rather than saying, "believe in Jesus for eternal life," You can know that is a bad fruit.

Nobody should be preaching to stop sinning in advance. We are told that we must repent and believe. Repenting and turning away from sin means a recognition of my sins, which involves Godly sorrow, brokenness and a commitment on my part to change the direction of my life. Repentance is not an emotion. Its more than being grieved or feeling sorry about my sin and even having remorse. God wants the person to make a decision of the heart and mind [the will] to turn away from sin. Your life was going in one direction [sin] and you make a decision by faith to take your life in the opposite direction with His help. It is making a genuine 180° change of heart recognizing that sin(s) is against God. By turning from our sins to God we acknowledge we have disobeyed God. We have violated His law, offended his moral purity, tried to cast off his yoke of authority. It requires that we admit we have turned from God to sin. That is faith. Repent means change your mind about your sinfulled life ALL SINS INCLUDING UNBELIEF, false gods, witchcraft, self righteousness etc. After repentance there must be a genuine change of life because living in sin is disobedience and rebellion against God and the end result will be destruction of the soul in hell. There must be a change in conduct and how you live. You don't have to remember every sin, Jesus knows them all. Confess ongoing sins, and ask for deliverance of them and forgiveness of all sins. Repentance turning from sin - is a prelude to holiness. Hebrews 12:14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy, without holiness no one will see the Lord. Walking in holiness begins with repentance. We should think about it as a lifetime daily discipline of our faith , necessary for a holy life. Matthew 6:9-15 None of us are sinless.

@greghillmusic I've never said that. Yes Jesus died for all people's sins. Jesus, Peter and Paul all tell us how to have our sins forgiven. Repent of sin and believe. If one refuses to acknowledge and change their mind about their sinfulled life then they really do not believe.

@2Chronicles714_ My thing is they never said repent of your sins and believe. They said repent and believe. The some verses where it says turn from your wicked ways seem to me to be referring to how to have your land healed and stuff like fellowship moreso than eternal life.

Most Christians who do understand and receive the gospel also understand that they are commanded to repent and live holy and they do so, however not all do that and they will be judged and face consequences for it but their salvation is not brought into question.

JD Greear cannot give a straight answer - if pressed - to "just how much" locks in the undeniable , indisputable , doubtless , incontrovertible "tell" that anyone is born again with endless Life . Nor can he Exegetically demonstrate that an equally arbitrary "carnality" objectively verifies that one is unregenerate . Nor , show us one Scripture that states : "Whosoever repents (turns from all sins till death) has Everlasting Life". Nor : "Whosoever doesn't turn from all sins till death will go to the lake of fire". The Corinthians passages you cited directly refute thos misunderstandings . 0:02

@Ydarg09 No one is saying you turn from sin and can never sin again till death. That's unbiblical sinless perfection. Of course we make a decision of the heart and mind [will] to turn from serving oneself in sin to serving Jesus. 1 John 1:9 Says [IF] we confess our sins He will forgive. Sins are only forgiven if confessed. Jesus said ask for forgiveness of sins daily. Matthew 6:12. So you can say I believe and that's it? You're justified? No change of mind about how you're living? No need to obey Christ, live for Christ, surrender to Christ simply say I believe in John 3:18? You must have a change of heart which will cause a change of conduct. If you believe in Jesus and want Him as Savior you must have a behavior and lifestyle change. You can't claim that since Jesus died as our sacrifice we don't do anything and a lifestyle change is works. Repentance and Believing go hand in hand. Without repentance you cannot be a believer. How can you claim you believe and not obey? This is why throughout the new testament repentance precedes Faith. For Jesus to grant forgiveness of sins to someone who has not made a heart change would make the grace of God an accomplice to evil.

JD Greear's view is ** by FAR ** the majority view within Churchianity , of any stripe . Its correspondence to all the passages devolving upon the "Broad Path" versus the "Narrow Path" ought to suggest a need to clarify the Object and Content of one's faith whereby one is born again with irrevocable Everlasting Life . Clearly JD opts for an Object and Content that is as subjective and unknowable as it is a direct contradiction of Ephesians 2:8-9 ; Romans 3:20-5:11,11:6 ; Titus 3:5 ; Phillipians 3:9 ; & the book of Galatians . It is undeniably impossible to have certitude of anyone's Everlasting destination based on purely fallible , and wholly unknowable metrics like another's "appearance" , "behaviors" , "lifestyle" and so on . So JD brings exactly what (?) good news to the table ? That neither he - nor anyone - can believe in the purely Objective Guarantee of irreversible Everlasting Life that little children can easily understand and believe , instantly having irrevocable Life at that moment . When all the high sounding Theological terminology is boiled off , JD is really saying : "You better roll up your shirtsleeves and get to work until you die , and hopefully there's a $ Paycheck with your name on it on the other side" . Neither is that "good news" , nor does it look the slightest like John 1:12-13,3:1-18,4:10-14,5:24,6:28-47,11:23-27,20:31 ; Acts 16:31 ; and 1 Timothy 1:16 .

JD Greear is backed up by Jesus John the Baptist and Paul. John 15:1-8 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. 4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 5I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 7If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. Luke 13:6-9 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. 7Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? 8And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: 9And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down. Matthew 3:8-10 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: 9And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 10And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Galatians 5:18-24 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. Colossians 1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.

@@2Chronicles714_ In the Matthew passage you sighted. The context is "False Prophets" & their bad fruit (see vs 7:15 & 20). Then in the SAME discourse Jesus warns of their end (7:21-27). Just like Jesus warns of the Scribes & Pharisees putting guilt & burdens upon the people. Yes, Paul repeats continually to forsake sin. God doesn't want us getting Meth-mouth or cirrhosis of the Liver or an STD (see Romans 7 for his own admission to capitulating to the flesh, & only Jesus can deliver him & us from it vs 24). Paul more so tells us that Grace alone, thru Faith alone in Christ alone justifies us. "If it is by Grace then it is no longer works" & we can only be forgiven by faith in Jesus finished work on the cross (see Romans 4:16-5:2). He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it... even if you go prodigal for a season. See also Titus 2:11-14 & Jude 24-25. The Thief on the cross: no restitution to those he stole from, no baptism or Synagogue attendance, he simply affirmed Jesus deity. The Pharisee vs the Publican, the publican stood far from the Temple, wouldn't look up, beat his breast & said "God have mercy on me a sinner". Jesus said (not me) that he went to his house justified. Works/Performance/Lordship Salvationists cause doubt & fatalism, very typical amongst Calvinist Pastors.

@@mikelyons2831 Anyone even those who leave comments that are contrary to God's word are false prophets. As you may already know John's gospel was written to repentant believers in the church. Jesus gives us a parable comparing a believer who did not repent to a sinner (unbeliever)who repents to God. Luke 18:9-14. Comparing a self righteous Pharisee who believed in God, prayed, fasted and tithed, but was, a fraud devoid of repentance of the heart meaning no relationship with God. Verse 13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘GOD, HAVE MERCY ON ME, A SINNER.’ 14👉“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.👈 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” The Pharisee didn't know salvation, he believed but never showed humility and brokenness by repentance. The tax collector was an unbeliever that repented and inherent in that of course was the expression of faith. Note Jesus said the REPENTANT SINNER WAS JUSTIFIED. The thief on the cross admitted he was guilty of his sins., he changed his mind (repented) Of his sinfulled life He said: Luke 23:41-43 We are punished justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. [Thats Repentance] 42And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. 43And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. HE FEARED GOD. Anyone who refuses to acknowledge and change their mind (repent) about their sinfulled life will not be forgiven, just as the thief if he wouldn't have admitted his sins, he would not have believed or been forgiven. If he would've only said Remember me he would not have been saved. The other thief didn't admit he deserved to die he insulted Jesus, HE DID NOT FEAR GOD, he didn't admit his sins he said: If he is who he claims he is let him save himself and us. The thief, repented which is the consequence of faith and is with Jesus in paradise.

There's not a single passage in Scripture that says that "sin" of any sort results in Everlasting condemnation in the lake of fire . Alvin rightly points out its undeniable "in house" application of both passages . Only unbelief in Him for His doubtless Guarantee of Everlasting Life cause that endless condemnation (John 3:18 ; Revelation 20:15) . @timgrady4630 Contrary to Alvin's false teaching that sin isn't the critical issue. What is the only thing that will keep you eternally separated from God? Sin. All people who reject God's command to repent of sin are not forgiven of sins, and therefore, in God's eyes are not believers. If all that was required was to profess belief in Jesus then why did Jesus, John the Baptist Peter and Paul ever say the word repent? They would've replaced Repent with believe. Matthew 5:13-16 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. When people are filled with the Holy Spirit, have a thriving relationship with God, and seek each day to follow the example of Jesus Christ, there is a significant glow about them. There is a difference in their humility, personalities, service to others, and of course how they are living. The light is your understanding that God is your Father, Jesus is your Savior, and your path is being led forward by the loving involvement of the Holy Spirit. It is the awareness that what you were before knowing Jesus personally, and accepting His sacrifice, is nothing like what you are now. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. In a world that is filled with darkness, believers are to be the lights shining through the darkness to lead people to the arms of Jesus. Our lights are our purposes that God has established in our lives, part of His plan to bring believers to His kingdom and eternity in heaven. When we accept these purposes - these callings in our lives - our wicks are lit inside and shine through us for others to see. Now more than ever, we are called to be lights to a world struggling against spiritual wickedness like never before.

@alvinfen4511 This guy goes around all the grace channels taking the joy out of their walk with Christ by making them look at themselves and remind them of their flesh. He never says anything encouraging, just words of condemnation to make them doubt the gospel. Beware of this wolf. Peace brother.

@alvinfen4511 Why would God say he would cause those in the new covenant with him to walk in his ways? If we aren’t going to do that, how does that make sense? Ezekiel 36:26-27 (NKJV) 26 “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do [them.]

This is what he's talking about. Can people see since the moment of your conversion that God is working in your life to make you Holy? Philippians 2:13 For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Can you see that? When you look at the world and maybe it decieves you,and draws you to it,that God comes and disciplines you? When you participate in sin you can't stand it because the Holy Spirit is so convicting you. Or can you call yourself Christian and still look like the world, act like the world, talk like the world, dress like the world,do everything that the world does? 1 John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world-the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life is not from the Father but is from the world. 17And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. He's going to little by little remove from you, your desire and fellowship with the world, and the lust thereof and He's going to replace that with a desire and a fellowship with Christ. Philippians 2:12-15 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 14Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 That you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. Since your supposed conversion are you growing in your devotion to God,and your love for Christ? Are you growing in Holiness, striving for Holiness or are you the same person that you were when you began? 1 Peter1:14-17 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15but as he who has called you holy also be holy in all your conduct, 16since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile Do you still love the world? James 4:4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. John 14:15 IF you love me, you will keep my commandments.

Paul's gospel as well as John's gospel are the same as the Lord Jesus's. Jesus decreed that Peter not Paul or John would start the church. Matthew 16:18. The book of Acts is where we go to for how to be born again. It is clear that there is one gospel for Jew and Gentile. John's gospel was written last. Therefore those who rely on John's promise of eternal life are putting the cart in front of the horse. The promise of eternal life in John is of course based in repentance and continuing obeying and staying in the faith.

@@2Chronicles714_ Jesus peter john preach the gospel of the kingdom paul preaches the gospel of grace galatians 2 7 king james clearly says there are 2 gospels they are contrary to each other so the church peter started is the same as the church the body of christ that paul preaches if so why the revelation of the mystery that was hid in god since the beginning that was given to paul only so if they are the same its not much of a secret if peter already knew it why does paul call it my gospel there is definitely a difference you seem pretty smart rightly divide the word of truth

@@dickgregory1218 The rebuttal to that in just a few scriptures. Jesus's final command for us after the resurrection. Luke 24:45-47 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, And REPENTANCE FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS will be preached in His name to 👉ALL NATIONS 👈Starting in Jerusalem. Matthew 16:18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome Acts 2 is the day of pentecost which is the start of the church. This was the first time in church where some asked how to be saved. 37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles,(Including John)“Brothers, what shall we do? 38Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off. (meaning gentiles) for all whom the Lord our God will call.” 40With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. Peter again includes Gentiles. Acts 11:18 When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, So then, even to Gentiles, God has granted REPENTANCE THAT LEADS TO LIFE". Acts 17:30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance but now COMMANDETH ALL PEOPLE EVERY WHERE TO REPENT. [Including Gentiles] Acts 20:21 I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they MUST TURN TO GOD IN REPENTANCE AND HAVE FAITH in our Lord Jesus. Acts 22:16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on the name of the Lord. Paul recounts his encounter with Jesus. Acts 26:18-20 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, SO THAT THEY MAY RECEIVE FORGIVENESS OF SINS and a place among those who are SANCTIFIED BY FAITH IN ME.’ 19“So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven.20First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should REPENT AND TURN TO GOD (believe) and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds/works/lifestyle. Where do you see 2 different gospels? Think about how confusing that would be if for example your mother was Jewish and your father Gentile. Which one would you have to follow? Paul makes it very clear in Romans 10:12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him Acts 11:18 Acts 20:21 A
