Why Do Calvinists Hate Zane Hodges' "The Gospel Under Siege"? - Bob Wilkin

In 1981 Zane Hodges published "The Gospel Under Siege" which explained how many problem passages in the Bible had been misinterpreted that faith includes works or that "true" faith guarantees a life-long pattern of good works. "The Gospel Under Siege" has been heavily criticized and ridiculed by many Calvinists. Bob Wilkin looks at a review of "The Gospel Under Siege" by R. Fowler White that was originally published in 1984 in "Westminster Theological Journal" and has been republished on September 7, 2023 at "The Heidelblog". Are the criticisms of "The Gospel Under Siege" in this blog valid? View the video and find out.

Roman Catholicism, Calvinism and Arminianism are so similar it’s difficult to say there was ever a reformation until you arrive at the Free Grace view of salvation. This is the only true reformational teaching that liberates from theological tyranny!

Two thoughts: Bob, your work here at GES reminds me soooo much of Zane Hodges work, which reminds me of Lewis S. Chafer’s work, which reminds me of CI Schofield’s work….which all remind me of the Apostle’s writings of the Epistles and gospels, inspired by the Holy Spirit. Second, the “why” behind faith alone is dependent upon the non-meritorious act of believing. Any merit on the human side is problematic and results in failure. It’s only through the efficacious sacrifice of Christ, PERFECT and substitutionary that through “faith” alone, we can be regenerated (born again), baptized, indwelled and filled with God’s Spirit. The Bible knows nothing of works for salvation. Thank you and May God bless.

"Second, the “why” behind faith alone is dependent upon the non-meritorious act of believing." For one to trust and believe the gospel they must be "born of the Spirit". If not - they remain a "natural man" (1 Cor 2:14 kjv). Faith is the Spirit's fruit (Gal 5:22 kjv). Apart from the mercy of God (Titus 3:5 kjv) - "There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God" (Rom 3:11 kjv).

My favorite assurance verse is John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. All Jesus said I need to do is come to him, and he promised he would not reject me under any circumstance. I know I sincerely came to him in my heart and asked forgiveness of all my sins and eternal life, and I know by the Word of God he accepted me. I am depending upon this promise from Jesus Christ who I know will never lie. I will never be perfectly faithful to Jesus, but he will be perfectly faithful to me. It's not about us folks, it's about Jesus.

If they had never believed in Jesus for everlasting that is 100% irrevocable OSAS Once Saved Always Saved the very moment you believe, then you was never saved and living in doubt and fear. So sad. John's gospel was written 60 years after Jesus's death on the cross. Well after Matthew Mark and Luke. John makes this clear in John 20:31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name. So after 60 years people were coming to all kinds of notions, with the help of a false teacher named Cerinthus that Jesus was not fully God or that He wasn't truly man. It was getting very close to what Jehovah's witnesse's believe. John wrote his gospel to already repented believers in the church of Ephesus that Jesus was truly human when He wept at Lazarus's tomb. Also that He was fully Devine and there are 7 witnesses that He was the Son of God and 7 miricles greater than the other gospels that point to His divinity and seven statements beginning with I am which is God's name. I am the living God. 7 witnesse's 7statements 7 miricles that Jesus was and is fully God. In John's gospel the word believe is always in the present continuous tense, which doesn't mean just believe once, it means go on believing. Everywhere in John's gospel the emphasis is going on believing. For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son that whosoever goes on believing- present continuous tense- Whoever is believing. It means to go on doing something, all the way through John's gospel it means go on believing that Jesus is the son of God, going on believing, you may go on having life. That whosoever goes on believing will never perish but go on having eternal life. Ask any expert in Greek and they will say that's what the original text says. In other words John's gospel was not written to convert people but to encourage believers to continue believing. That's why John doesn't deal with repentance or water baptism because he assumes the readers are already repented and been baptized. The fact that John doesn't mention repentance doesn't mean its not necessary. He's saying go on believing because in Ephesus, where John lived when he wrote it there was a heretic called Cerinthus that was teaching bad things about Jesus and that bad teaching was getting into the church. So John wrote his gospel for believers to encourage them go on believing in Jesus as the son of God. Believing that Jesus is the son of God, going on believing that you may go on having life. John doesn't say to Repent of sin. Other things left out are Jesus's birth, his water baptism, or the start of His earthly ministry. His temptation in the wilderness. Confronting demons, no parables,no mention of last supper, no ascension Does that mean John didn't believe those things happened? John says the word believe around 95 times. John's message is to encourage us to keep believing. And eyewitness evidence that Jesus is the Son of God. Whosoever Believes, (present continuous tense) What If scripture said Repent of sin, and you don't have to believe? Everyone would agree that makes absolutely no sense. Why would anyone Repent if they didn't believe? Peter : Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 20:21 I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they MUST TURN TO GOD IN REPENTANCE and HAVE FAITH (believe) in our Lord Jesus. Acts 26:18-20 To open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’ 19“So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven. 20First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds.

Not to mention in the Gospel of John we read: Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 15:2 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 15:6 The idea is to keep abiding lest one be taken away as a branch and cast into the fire. As to the Lord’s teaching on sin: She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. 8:11 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. 5:14 Sounds like ‘turn FROM your sins’ to me. And the next verse seems to indicate we are to turn TO righteousness: If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 14:15-16

Calvinism and Arminianism are a different matter from Lordship and free grace. People just end up bashing Calvinists because Lordship came up in that context. Theocast is reformed (5 point Calvinist) and free grace. Historically some free grace teachers were 4 point Calvinists. The main development in the last few decades seem to be this idea that an apostate can be saved. I know why people argue it, but it seems flatly unscriptural given verses like Mark 16:16 and John 3:36.

As I understand it, the reason we do good works after salvation (Justification) is the holy spirit inspires us to do the will of God. Those works don't save us or keep us saved they validate that we really believe what we say we believe. The spirit empowers us to follow Christ's example. None of us can do this perfectly. The Christian is always under grace and his works are made possible by God's spirit living in us. So, to summarize, Salvation is by Grace Alone Through Faith Alone. Sanctification is a separate process that continues through our lives. It's a process of growing in faith and learning to trust God and do his will. We will have ups and downs but that doesn't have any effect on our salvation. It only applies to whether we receive rewards at the seat of Christ our king. I think that will determine what we will be doing for eternity in God's kingdom.

Calvinists hate Zane Hodges because Calvinists have another "Jesus" and another "gospel". Calvinists teach "John Calvin 3:16". Calvinists are more entrenched in the philosophical presuppositions of men and have elevated the false teachings of men above Scripture. Colossians 2:8 - Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

The issue I continue to have with modern day, Wiki 2.0 reformed Calvinists is their condemning hostility, openly displayed against brothers and sisters in Christ, who hold a different view… MacArthur, Washer, White, Baucham, to name a few, proclaim that the vast majority of Christians are going to Hell because they reject 5 Point Calvinism, that our salvation is fraudulent having prayed a prayer found nowhere in the Bible… Their self righteousness and their arrogance is frustrating but, worse, it threatens the assurance of new Christians and those whose faith is not strong enough to discern, withstand and ignore their false teachings, as their prodigious reputations precede them…

2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?-unless indeed you fail to meet the test!" If a work of God does not continue than its not a work of God. If you fall short of the test repent and believe. Cry out to God for mercy until a work is done To test yourself to see if you're a real Christian read 1John. 1John 3:3-10 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. 4Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother. 1 John 1:5-7 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all 6If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. What does it mean to walk in darkness? A style of life.If we say we are a Christian and our lifestyle contradicts everything God has told us about Himself and His will we are a liar. If our lifestyle contradicts God's character then claiming to be a Christian is a lie. Not talking about unscriptual sinless perfection. Even a very mature Christian is susceptible to sin. Someone that has truly been born again will be sensitive to sin and they will be led to repentance and confession to that sin. 1 John 1:8-10 IF we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 IF we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 IF we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. When was the last time you were broken over a sin? If you are sensitive to sin it will lead you to confession.

Calvin, Arminius, Wesley, ..even Paul in what he wrote outside the Bible, are not authoritative. Zane Hodges isn't, either, but it's all our individual responsibilities to look toward our Master Jesus for God's Truth. The Bible directly says what it takes to be saved. 1 Corinthians 15:2 points to a necessary and complete list of beliefs and Romans 10:9-13 requires a specific action which it emphasizes 3 times in that little passage that we must do to be saved. And it's all about Christ. None of it is about keeping ourselves from sin, though our desire to do so it an effect of salvation. According to 1 Corinthians 15:1-3a, believe 4 things listed in 1 Corinthians 15:3b-8 and do 1 thing listed 3 times in Romans 10:9-13 to be saved. Romans 10:14a ties the 2 together, so that those who both believe and confess Lord Jesus are not afraid from the fact of either the demons who believe and are terrified nor the ones who say "Lord, Lord", but He never knew them, but we, indeed, trust Him. And He makes us glad. And we want to be closer to Him. I can't find another passage that says to do or to believe something to be saved, but if I did, I'd surely add it in ..it's just not there so far as I've been able to tell. What have you found, dear sibling in our same Master and Savior, according to the Scriptures? Don't be afraid during your Dark Night of the Soul. Don't be confused about who your neighbor is, because we behave toward the Worlding and the Christian differently. Be certain about this foundation - and then let's move on! We have work to do (but not in order to be saved!).

@Vulcancruiser 1 Corinthians 15:2 By this gospel you are saved, [IF] you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. If we believe the gospel that Paul preached, we will come to Christ in repentance. Acts 17:30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance but now commandeth all people every where to repent. Acts 20:21 I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus. Jesus and Paul Acts 26:18-20 To open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’ 19 So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven. First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds. Show evidence of your repentance by your conduct. We must also be immators of Christ as Paul was (1 Corinthians 11:1). Romans 8:6-7,13 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.13For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. Ephesians 4:17-24 17So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed. 20That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

@Vulcancruiser The gospel of Jesus is repentance the gospel of Paul does not contradict Jesus. Paul is very clear that Jew and Gentile must repent of sin and believe in Jesus. 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 Yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because YOUR SORROW LED YOU TO REPENTANCE. For YOU BECAME SORROWFUL as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10GODLY SORROW BRINGS REPENTANCE THAT LEADS TO SALVATION and leaves no regret, but worldly SORROW BRINGS DEATH. Anyone who teaches Paul's gospel does not mention repentance is a false teacher.

To continue believing that Jesus is the Son of God. John's gospel was written long after the accounts of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Since those writings were established, and their details known, John's writing to the church of Ephesus diverges to show a different perspective. His choice of which details to include, and which to omit, is not an accident. Every writer has some purpose in mind, and John's purpose is stated here. He wants those who read these words to understand that Jesus is the Savior and the Son of God. John 20:30). John has not included every single detail, nor could he (John 21:25). Even if he could, it wouldn't matter to those who refuse to accept belief (John 5:29-30). Rather, this book chooses certain points to complement those found in the other writings. When John writes his letters,John's proof known as 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John, and his Revelation, the same theme will apply. The purpose of Scripture is to reveal these crucial truths (2 Timothy 3:16) so disciples can have an objective source of godly wisdom (1 Corinthians 4:6). John's gospel was written for already repented believers. How could an unbeliever understand verses like these? John 14:5-6 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. John 14:12,16,17 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father 16And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever17Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Paul never preached a separate gospel to Gentiles. Acts 20:21 21I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus. There are more. Jesus decreed Peter to start the church, not Paul or John. Matthew 16:18

@dickgregory1218 Throughout scripture, repentance always precedes Faith. King James says the same. Those who say to reject the Lord Jesus's teaching and listen to Paul have made Paul a false god. Paul recounts his conversion with Jesus. Acts 26:18-20 kj To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. [Faith in Jesus not Paul] 19Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: 20But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. Open your eyes from the darkness to Jesus. Repent of your sins turn to God by Faith Show evidence of your repentance by your works/ lifestyle. Again, repent of sin and believe. If you're correct that Jesus's teachings were only for the Jews then why would Jesus say this ? Luke 24:45-47? 45Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47And that REPENTANCE and REMISSION OF SINS should be PREACHED IN HIS NAME AMONG ALL NATIONS, beginning at Jerusalem. It wasn't Paul who died for our sins on that cross. I'll ask again if Jesus's came only for the Jews then his blood sacrifice is only for the Jews. How then are Gentiles sins forgiven? I'll let Paul give you an answer from King James. 2 Corinthians 7:10 10 For godly sorrow, worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. Repentance of sin results in Salvation. Jesus said it first, Peter said it second. One gospel for all people.

@dickgregory1218 Your you are claiming is there are 2 gospels, meaning there are 2 roads to heaven. False. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Not by Paul but by Jesus.

@@2Chronicles714_ dont make it so difficult the 4 gospels are to the jew only under the covenant jesus was sent to the lost sheep of israel he sent the 12 to the lost sheep of israel the only time christ went to the gentiles was when he sent paul far hence to the gentiles in this the dispensation of the grace of god the ascended lord gave paul the revelation of the mystery he received THE GOSPEL that he preached to the gentiles jews could also be saved by the pauls my gospel today there is only one gospel that can save you and that is pauls my gospel he gives it many other names some people still preach what peter preached to the men of israel repent and be baptised for remission of sins is that salvation ? and some say it is in johns gospel if you will seperate and rightly divide the word of truth it makes it so simple divide law and grace prophecy and mystery etc everything fits like a jig saw puzzle if you keep mixing everything then you have to try to force the pieces into the puzzle and they wont fit paul is not a god or my savior he is the messenger that the risen christ chose on this side of the cross to take THE GOSPEL TO THE GENTILE AND THE JEWS so when you believed THE GOSPEL which is the death burial and resurrection the HOLY SPIRIT baptizes you into the body of christ we are the body christ is the head does christ or the 12 ever preach the body of christ or his death burial and resurrection for salvation ? ITS NOT THAT HARD JUST RIGHTLY DIVIDE THE WORD OF TRUTH
