In this aps-c vs full-frame test I am pitting the Canon m100 vs a Sony zv-e1 in what could be considered a David vs Goliath-like mismatch. Who would create such an unfair challenge? Me, that's who! And I loved every minute of it.
In an effort to help creators find true value when it comes to RU-vid gear I'm on a quest to find the sweet spot between quality and price. Sure my Sony ZV-E1 looks great but it costs well over $5,000. Do most people need that to start their channels? No! So what DO they need? The Canon m100? Maybe! Let's find out.
To watch me compare the Sigma 16mm with an APS-C camera vs the Sony 24mm on a full-frame, click here: • Can You Tell the Diffe...
Thanks for watching!

Glad you found the video! Exactly. Getting started is the most important thing. With the right practice, a Pro with a $300 camera could probably do better work than an Amateur with a $5,000 setup. So getting started and learning on a camera you can afford is the best thing you can do.

As a starter kit the M100 with the kit lens definitely works just fine. It's like you said, it's the story or topic and how interesting you make it that keeps people watching, not how blurry the background is. But I am interested in your next video giving it a fair chance with the Sigma 16mm f/1.4! 😊
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 8 месяцев назад
Haha right? I know... the kit lens is, well, pretty BAD. But at least the video is there in case anyone is ever curious! I think in the right circumstance it does look fine... it's a start. Maybe the m100 vs my ol' Samsung S21 would be an actual contest lol.

M100 looks pretty decent for the price! But at that point, I'd probably just use my cell phone.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 8 месяцев назад
Right? Though watching it on a big screen I don't personally enjoy looking at the m100 footage, but it'll be interesting to see what happens with the Sigma on there. I think using a phone, like you said IS valid... it really makes you wonder how redundant phones are making cameras and more specifically, at what price point/quality does it become actually worth it to use a decent camera/lens? That's kind of what I'm trying to find out.

Selling my zv-e1 to buy the canon m100 😊
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 8 месяцев назад
Hahaha right?! My next test should be really interesting... I really didn't take the time with the zv-e1 footage in this video like I usually would to make it shine. I will do it for both clips in the next one... then you should see just how sick the zv-e1 really is. I love it! No regrets. What lens do you usually rock on there?

@@thesahdstudio But if you have to work hard in post to polish the video, I see that as a negative for the Sony. The Sony skintones, as shot here, were really orange and not pleasant.

Picked up a cheap used M100 in mint condition, with the kit lens. In good light it does a great job. I live in a bright sunny place, and don't do much low light/indoor shooting. So I added the Canon 10-18mm f4.5-5.6, with the Viltrox AF adaptor, and it does a great job. I certainly wouldn't spend $5k on a video-centric camera. And I don't want a totally blurred background on a video recording.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 3 месяца назад
That sounds like a great little setup. And what a cool lens... How is the autofocus? I do love having my setup but it's hard to justify the cost sometimes.. especially for just making RU-vid videos!

My man 👊 appreciate the comment and for you watching my videos. What do you think of the 24-70mm? Is f2.8 enough Bokeh to really scratch the itch or do you ever wish you had more? That seems like an insane lens for photography as well as a crazy versatile video lens for walking around. Worth the cost?

next time if you ever do this, its probably best to focus on a point between both cameras. they tell you if you cant stare someone in the eye just look at the bridge of their nose, it will appear they are looking at you in the eyes.

the Canon seems to pick up more reds, for contrast it makes your skin tone appear pinkish, and the Sony makes your skin look more orange. so which ever is more like how you look in real life Id say thats the better camera. even though I kinda like the Sony aperture where its a bit blurry in the background (cinematic). and the Canon makes it look all in focus which may be better in a candid way.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 3 месяца назад
Yeah I love the Bokeh too. It really makes the subjects pop and the aperture allows in a lot of light which makes editing it and post a lot of fun. It certainly cost more but yeah the point of the videos is to show that if you're just trying to make RU-vid content does it really matter? Each one is different not necessarily better.
@LunarGlowMedia

Judging based on the depth of field difference, the m200 (edit:m100) is camera 2. You could be pulling shenanigans though, so I reserve my judgement lol.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 8 месяцев назад
Haha yes you are correct! I think depending on how you watch the video the quality on the m100 will look different. For example, when I watch it on a big screen the lower resolution is a pretty big giveaway, but when I watched it on my phone in 1080p, they look a lot more similar in quality. The next video with a better lens should be even more confusing!
@LunarGlowMedia
@LunarGlowMedia 8 месяцев назад
@@thesahdstudio I watched it on my phone while I was on my lunch break, and in some ways the Canon actually looked better. I chalk that up to Canon just having better color science for skin tones, which is one of the big reasons that I'm hesitant to switch to Sony or Panasonic. I'm starting to look at Black Magic again now that they've gone full frame. L mount still has a paltry selection of lenses, but EF glass is plentiful and generally optically solid.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 8 месяцев назад
@@LunarGlowMedia to be honest when I watch the footage on a large screen the Canon footage looks really bad to my eye. It will be really interesting seeing how it looks with the Sigma though... I had that lens on my Sony a6400 and it was a bit of a game-changer. I sold all my stuff (as you can see buy my previous videos) to get into the Canon ecosystem with the Canon r6... I eventually switched back to Sony since there really are so many small things they do which makes video creation better/easier. Plus it really is easy to tweak the footage in post if you take the time. I can see the draw to Canon but for video production, unless you spend the big bucks you just get so much more with Sony. I can't weigh in on the Blackmagic stuff yet. Hopefully one day I can tinker with that!

@@thesahdstudio we do it a couple of times a year. When it comes to cameras the tax can equate to hundreds of $$$ in savings. Yeah CAD is weak AF but it is what it is. I heard a rumour today that the A7Siv won’t be released until Sept 2024, which I really hope will be moved up to Q1. Really wanna change my camera but don’t want dated gear.

@@quiztasiarocks Oof that far away eh? I mean, if you could get a hot deal on a used A7siii it might be worth it... worst case scenario you use it for awhile then sell it for a little less? Camera prices don't go down THAT much... the a7c and r6 are good examples of that.

I'm in buying decision, more than 1000$ it's just every extra feature would cost 100$ more and more gradually. After every camera review I saw, the cameras shoot great videos and take amazing stills, it's become harder and harder to choose these days 😅 6k, 8k, 10bit, and even stacked sensor is just waay overkill for regular person but it's sometimes the reviewers sooth themselves by telling us how Great those features to us and convincing us (the viewers) how good they are, step back and just accept that every single tech these days are developed from the basic invention the were before and believe me I don't notice or take my notebook and focus on the gear pros and cons, I care about the value that i waste my time in 😂 Finally for me it's just about colors and AF , 4k 24 is my cup of tea I wouldn't go higher

Your demonstrate the ZV-E1 shoots quite well in low light. I don't have powerful lights, so this quality is nice. I want to shoot English education videos with me walking around in front of a background. I'd also be picking up and moving props around. I was thinking about a Panasonic s5m2, but I'm worried about it losing focus. I hear that it can lose focus when several competing objects are in the frame. For the autofocus, the Sony cameras look good...and safer. Maybe the focus would stay on me better. Both the ZV-E1 and the FX30 look good. Perhaps I'd spend less on lighting or electric bills if I bought the ZV-E1.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 7 месяцев назад
Haha, it definitely is quite the investment. Especially when you pair it with a nice lens... but then like you said, you don't have to worry. The autofocus and low lighting capabilities are insane. With that said, Sony's older stuff is good too, and unless you are really going to take this seriously and/or are making money off it, maybe you don't need to start with the very best of gear. Heck even something like the ol' Sony a6400 with the Sigma 16mm is good enough for you. I reviewed that on my other channel here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zVnyGKw9JFg.htmlsi=R1rbJZOzb43iV67t But yeah, I think the zv-e1 is amazing and if you can afford it you won't regret it.
