You used my comment!! Glad you checked into it and it worked out. Non metallic may be a big part of it, copper is the issue with some PT wood. I'm glad you confirmed my suspicions that some treated woods can work.

The bunks on my 2006 bass boat trailer finally wore out and I replaced them myself. I do not know what lumber was used originally but I checked the bottom of the boat and there was no damage. This was in 2015 so whatever the wood it must have been pretty good, treated or not. Anyway, I had some two by fours on hand from a previous project and had been in my attic out of the weather for several years. It was in good shape, no warpage, no knot holes, etc but there wasn't enough to do 4 bunks. Off to Lowes I go to buy more. Did so and off to the launch. Took me just a couple of hours and I was back home slapping myself on the back for having done such a great job. Yes, I had looked at You Tube for comments on how to do the job. Sure enough, there are the pros and cons of using treated, pressure treated, non treated, and such. I used the wood that is mentioned in this presentation by Kig outdoors. I jack up my boat two or three times a year to check what's going on and nothing is going on, no pitting, rusting, or holes five years after the job. I'm either lucky or this guy is right, and I think he's right.

I just painted/sealed my treated lumber and laid foam tape across the struts. No contact. Besides that wood isn't going to eat through the aluminum for a long time. Think about how old these boats we are redoing are, and you only find a few pit marks and few actual holes. It was the rivets that did the most leaking. Great job can't wait to see the finish product.

I put treated plywood and carpet in my old tracker several years ago. I must have got lucky with the type I purchased because I didn't have any issues. I never would have thought about different types of treated wood reacting with the aluminum. All the time, money, and energy on that project. I would have been crushed if it destroyed my boat... Thanks for the very informative video!

Yeah I thought I messed up too after decking out our boat in pressure treated wood from menards. But after doing some research, menards AC2 pressure treated plywood is also safe with aluminum. I even contacted the manufacturing company and they confirmed it is safe with aluminum. Just wanted to let you and others know that menards is another option. Just make sure it is AC2 treated.

I got my uncle’s 14 foot aluminum fishing boat and did a few thing like your boat up in the bow but he used unpainted aluminum from highway signs and when I started fixing it up the aluminum in contact with the steel and aluminum in the seats destroyed the seats so I ripped everything out and Ann in the process of rebuilding everything I’m using pressure treated plywood from home depot but the one thing I’m doing different is all the plywood is coated with several layers of fiberglass to protect the wood and the inside is repainted. So far it’s going great but being that I live in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and I don’t have a garage and the date is 9-5-2021 I have about 40 days before snow starts. Thanks for the information and good luck.

Back in the day, they used coppertox to treat wood. Needless to say, it had copper in it and two dissimilar metals will corrode. Good info on the new stuff.
@mountainplumbing
@mountainplumbing Год назад
This is what AI Chat Says. "When copper and aluminum are in contact with each other in the presence of an electrolyte containing ions, such as saltwater, an electrical potential difference is created between them. This can cause the aluminum to corrode and form holes." I would have never guessed it. Getting ready for a repair myself. Thanks Sir.

I’m currently converting a 16 foot bass tracker into a bass boat again. Although you went with the safe treated plywood for aluminum. I went with non treated but I coated the wood twice with an oil based enamel and siliconed the edges. Which I got the idea from Michael Lopez. Either way it’ll do the same job as what you did. Good luck to you!

If it's kept dry you can use a membrane to seperate the wood from the metal, but in a boat if it gets wet it will leach out onto the metal. You can use cedar wood it is rot resistant.

@alcheckalski9716
@alcheckalski9716 3 года назад
@@KIGOutdoors I'm no expert in this subject but the way I understand it from what I've read online it is that Arsenic was no longer allowed after 2003 and that copper was used in it's place. Copper is the reason for the corrosion. As you pointed out in the video it appears that there are some products that are claiming to be safe for use with Aluminum. I don't have any first hand experience with these products to know how this claim holds up. I would believe that if you haven't seen any corrosion on your project after a year that it must be safe. Might be worth taking a real close look at where the wood butts up against the aluminum to let your viewers know what they could expect.

So that brand of plywood is safe that is good to know. My question to you is did you look into the 2xs that you used? Those look pretty green? which in all the damaged boats I repair seems to be the green treat/pressure treated or CCA that causes the issues.
@KIGOutdoors

Yes the 2x4's that I ripped in half were made by the same company and yes you are right about the CCA. It is what causes the Corrosion to aluminum. But I called the company and contacted lowes and they both said it was safe to be used with aluminum. Now that being said I haven't tested it out myself of a long period of time. But I still am using it in my boat. So far nothing has showed up in that 4 months that would worry me. I Encourage you or anybody to do their own Research. I googled around and it seems that CCA PT wood is okay to use together but the wood and metal needs to be kept from direct contact by separating the two with a rubber or plastic sheeting,, or the likes. I do believe that a layer of deck carpet between the deck plywood and aluminum boat should be work even better. Or use a rubber or plastic membrane,, and the carpet together.

Well, let's talk about it. I appreciate you doing you own research and looking into the product. Or something like that. Lol but to get to your question about any issues that I have see. So It visually appears to have zero affect on the aluminum. But have i pulled a piece of the frame up and looked under it. No!! Like I said in the video do your research and use if you want, it shows in the document that is safe to use with aluminum. The problem is everyone wants to repeat what others say and think theyre smart. By the time youre done painting, epoxing, or what every your going to do to the wood, is it really going to touch aluminum? Plus on top of that youre most likely going to carpet the wood. This is great to know. I've seen these same RU-vid videos too saying the same thing over and over. I guess it really does depend on the ingredient used. There is a process that uses formaldehyde to pressure treat wood, maybe that is the stuff that eats aluminum, and this might be where all this started. I've seen video footage of old boats being severely pitted that had treated lumber, so this may have had an earlier chemical process that was used but modern materials now are used to accommodate aluminum applications of all types as more and more aluminum is being used for weight savings in many applications beside boats. It's good that you did your homework rather than to just follow along with the "herd".
