If you caught yesterday’s video, you might recognize these prism glasses as one of the weird non-crochet products that have helped me solve some problems I faced when crocheting! I received several comments from viewers who already wear glasses when crocheting, so I thought I’d do some research (on my family 😂) to see if the prism glasses are still an option for those who already wear glasses. Thank you Mom, Dad @BooneDownSouth, and Em for your willingness to help me and my viewers!
Here’s what we found:
1. The prism glasses tend to fit over other pairs of glasses. The lightweight frame has enough flex that even if it’s a tight fit it can go over the other frames.
2. If the frames of the prism glasses are snug enough against the initial pair of glasses, then it can stay in place on its own. See footage of my dad’s antics for proof! My dad’s reading glasses and my blue light glasses were both close enough in size to the prism glasses that the rubber section of the prism glasses arms could grip the other pair and stay in place.
3. If the frames are narrower than the prism glasses, they will not stay on their own. My mom’s frames were only a little smaller than the prism glasses. In this scenario, you might be able to rig up a way to hold them in place. Clothespins technically work, but I wouldn’t consider it an ideal option. We tried paper clips without much luck. What might be a good option is to use rubber bands. Rubber bands encircling the arms of both glasses might provide enough hold to keep them in place.
4. If the frames are too much narrower than the prism glasses, it’s much harder to find a solution. My sister has a small head, and her glasses frames are kid sized. This creates a significant gap between the arms of her glasses and the prism glasses. We couldn’t get clothespins to fit on both sides, only on the one side. This was less than ideal. In this case, we couldn’t find a way to make the prism glasses work over her glasses.
What all this means is the prism glasses may or may not work over your specific pair of glasses. If it were me and I wanted to give prism glasses a try, I would verify the return policy of the pair I decided to order. If the pair had a return for any reason policy, I would order them to try out. Worst case scenario is they don’t work out and you return the glasses. But if they do work out, I think you will find them as helpful as I have!
One other idea is to look for a pair of prisms that clip onto glasses frames. When I searched Amazon for “prism glasses clip on”, I only found one listing. It was priced over $45 and only had 5 reviews. This did not leave me feeling confident about the product. But perhaps there are others on the market for a better price and with more credibility.
A final note is it might be a little trickier if you wear bi-focals. The prism glasses would need to line up with the bottom portion of the bi-focals. The potential here is it could tilt the glasses downwards too much and cause the prisms to reflect your tummy instead of the crochet project on your lap. With that said, I don’t think it would be impossible to line things up. It just might require a little extra creativity in how you rig up a system to wear both pairs of glasses.
