Canada election: People's Party of Canada voters came from both right and left

Following Canada’s 44th election on Monday, the main federal parties are trying to determine the impact of the People’s Party of Canada (PPC).
The PPC won no seats, but an estimated 820,000 Canadians did vote for a PPC candidate. That’s more than twice the number that voted for a Green Party candidate.
The PPC finished second in eight ridings, mostly in rural Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
And as David Akin explains, the PPC vote was made up of much more than just disaffected Conservatives.

Twitter restricted People's Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier's account, preventing him from posting any new messages for 12 hours after he used the platform to encourage his supporters to "play dirty" with journalists covering his campaign. The offending tweets singled out three reporters, calling them "idiots" and describing their efforts to question him as "disgusting smear jobs." Bernier tweeted out their email addresses and encouraged his followers to "play dirty." CTV journalist Christy Somos responded to the attacks online. In a tweet describing "what your inbox looks like after Bernier tweets about you," Somos posted a screenshot of a threatening email she was sent. In that email, someone who appears to be a PPC supporter says that they hope Somos is sexually assaulted and murdered and encourages her to kill herself. CTV News communications manager Rob Duffy told CBC News in an email that Somos would not be providing details about her interactions with the PPC party. Somos tweeted out a link to story she wrote for CTV that shed some light on the matter. The story quotes a number of experts drawing links between the PPC and extremist and racist views and was posted immediately after her tweet containing the threatening email.

@@MyMusicHarbourage Is he wrong? My parents generation came to this country in the 80s and 90s. They worked hard, assimilated to Canadian life, and caused no problems. Today's generation of immigrants are selfish, don't respect the law of the land, and demand special treatment. I say this about the ones coming from my own motherland. Tell me he's wrong.

@@---GOD--- He's still wrong and maybe (I'm merely speculating) your family came from Europe which is why it didn't take them long to "integrate". What Trudeau's doing is that he's taking refugees and immigrants from countries that are beyond repair. He isn't taking immigrants from countries that can help themselves. There's a difference.

Not anti-immigrant at all, but the people that are brought here should want to be here and should want to offer something. As for anti vaccine and anti mask, do what you want as a free Canadian, you should have the choice, I have no problem with people that where masks, go a head, go ahead and get a vaccine if it helps you feel safer, just don’t try and decide what I want and don’t want, that’s freedom, that’s PPC

The freedom to infect other people with the virus is overridden by the freedom not to be infected by the virus, much like how the freedom to murder is overridden by the freedom not to be murdered. Masks mandates make sense for this reason. This is basic ethical theory.

@@poesypoet I enjoy your analogy...but I don't think it works. There is poetic truth, but the maths don't work. Besides, the people "in power" don't have real power, as a wolf would. It's more like 2m sheep ceding power to 1 sheep in wolves clothing... in a costume contest with 4 other sheep. @@declaninc The party was months old when the 2019 election was called. Their best-case scenario for a new party is the Reform Party's growth. Reform got 2% in its first election (PPC got 1.6%) and elected no one. Reform got 16% of the vote (and elected 52 members) in their second election, but they had five years to organize between those two elections.

Cambridge riding: Liberal won by 1600 votes, 3,848 votes went to PP. Nipissing-Timiskaming riding: Liberal won by 2100 votes, with 3,269 votes went to PP. It was used to be NDP that splits liberal votes, now it's the turn of the right to suffer the same fate. A vote for PP is a vote to keep Trudeau in power.

There’s a third option - if no one, in your opinion, is capable of running your country to your satisfaction you can create your own political party and see how you make out! I voted PPC because they are the only party who are rightly claiming that the vaccine mandates and domestic passports are unconstitutional. Even though I am vaccinated, I oppose any law that goes against the constitution because the constitution is the supreme law of the land and we should keep it that way.

Nothing unconstitutional about it. You're confusing Canada with that flaming garbage heap of a country to the south of us. For example, they have a constitutional right to bear arms; we don't. And as for vaccine mandates... "...Section 1 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms says *‘all of the rights and freedoms in the charter are subject to such reasonable limits as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society,."* As per Cheryl Milne, executive director of Canada's David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights, “What that means is that there is this kind of proportional, reasonable approach that *governments can actually limit people’s rights so long as they have a very good reason and can demonstrate why. A global pandemic might just be one of those reasons."* CHECKMATE, B**CHES!!!

@@Frithonor I am aware of the exception. The onus is on the crown to show that the action is justifiable and reasonable. As per your quote, this must be demonstrated. The laws have been imposed provincially without demonstrating that they are reasonable and justifiable. They should be regarded as unconstitutional until proven otherwise by the crown. The courts will have to decide. My personal view is that these laws were imposed quickly and without demonstrable justification on their constitutionality. Both vaccinated and non-vaccinated people can spread the virus. The pandemic is going to be with us for a long time. If we let the government get away with it, they will keep these laws indefinitely and impose even more.

You may not have noticed, but the right wing, and conservatives do not believe in helping anybody at all. Unless maybe your a senior, or a veteran, but even then, dont count on it. Its up you, pull yourself up by your boot straps. The only time people talk about helping canadians is when they are complaining about helping foreigners lol. @@jrg770 wrong, that is a very arrogant and simplistic attempt to paint "the right" with a board brush, many right wing voters are hard working people, and active donors themselves whether they are small business owners, farmers, church goers (that pastor from Alberta who you would consider right wing operated food drives and buffet for poor street people), they give a lot to charities, or even entrepreneurs. Some of them also volunteer for the community. They just do not believe government mandated and agenda driven donations, which often leads to squandering and corruption of our public tax dollars is an efficient way to support people. Because how can a burecrat sitting behind a desk in Ottawa know the best way to spend your money helping those close to you?

Yes, it was very unique. The PPC platform was basically saying every conspiracy group was correct: Anti-vaxxers are right, climate change deniers are right, being welcoming of other cultures makes us weak, other countries are stealing our livelihood. Every one of those individually is nonsense, and the sum total of them ALL is just ridiculous. But if you agree with conspiracy theories, conspiracy theorists will happily vote for you.

@@seluhir8820 Believing that people should have a choice over vaccination does not make you anti-vax or a conspiracy theorist. I personally am double vaxxed. Having concerns over mass immigration does not mean someone believes multiculturalism makes us weak. Many of us are more concerned with the effects that 400,000 immigrants a year have on the job market and housing supply (it is not a coincidence that the cities with the most expensive housing are the ones taking in the most immigrants). Trade imbalances and outsourcing have negatively impacted some Canadian's livelihoods.

@@MegaAssface there were literally people being shipped from British Columbia to Ontario because there was no emergency centre closer. Do you know why all those ER’s are full that’s right all the people with COVID that aren’t as young or healthy as you that see theses vaccines as a terrible thing. So could you imagine someone having a heart attack who can’t get on a plane, that person has 8 hours tops before there’s no way to save him and simply put an ambulance doesn’t have the required recourses to hold someone in a condition like that for hours. What about the cancer patients that can’t get treated because it kills their immune system and if they get in contact with any doctor that isn’t aware they have COVID yet then they’re as good as dead. So what is your freedom more important than someone else’s life because that’s what it sounds like.

I took time out of my day to hear a PPC candidate speak and I never heard "anti" once. I did hear "reasonable" and "our charter rights are not charter privileges". Everything that was said aligned with my belief system more than any other party.

It's not sustainable and will further exacerbate the problem of housing shortage among other issues. They support immigration but think the number should be reduced to approx 150,000 yearly I believe. The same goes for foreign aid. They are not 'anti-foreign aid', they believe some of that money, (not all), should be allocated to helping Canadians first. I agree.

Then why not vote NDP? If you don't like the status quo, then you are essentially saying you don't want the liberals or conservatives in power (because those are the only 2 parties that have ever been in power federally). The PPC has a very low chance of getting in power. If you want to shake things up and try something that hasn't been tried before, the NDP is the most likely party to get voted in, and therefore your best chance of upsetting the status quo. Don't know about their platform, don't care. If all you want is something other than status quo, the math very definitively says the NDP offers you the best chance. If you don't want to vote that way, perhaps that means you care about something more than upsetting the status quo. If so, figuring out what that something is and accepting it may help you find the party you most agree with. For the record, I'm not judging your choices, vote PPC or don't. I'm just following your claim's logic to its natural conclusion as an exercise. I find doing that helps me figure out what my own motivations are. For instance, I agree with getting something other than the status quo. That's why I voted NDP. I want to see what a 3rd party would actually do in federal office and I don't care which 3rd party. The NDP gives me the best chance of seeing that.

But nevertheless my point is that, (despite highlighting very real issues with the status quo) parties that are explicitly formed on the grounds of anger and grievances, without concrete visions of what they actually want, are typically capable of committing the worst of atrocities. This is what people dislike about the PPC. You can’t say you’re simply pro Canada without explaining what Canada means to you. The PPC will squirm around this, and typically reflect the loudest and angriest voices in their camp at any moment. You can see how bad this could turn.

I think it'll be longer than 5 years. Gotta remember the younger generation is far more vocal and into politics than ever before and the new wave of younger people love NDP/Liberal. Depending what's going on in the future will be a major consideration but I still think PPC can grow and possibly gain seats. I just can't see them fighting neck and neck against the Libs and Cons anytime soon. We'll see though. I voted PPC as well. Whomever gets shunned by the media gets my attention. The whole banning, cancelling and ignoring people screams at me "we are so pathetic we have no logical argument or platform so ban any opposition". The weak and cowardly seems to me.

I will vote NDP before “conservative”. I’m sick of the CPC telling me I “owe” them my vote and I’m not allowed to choose for myself. Maybe conservatives should give me something to vote for. Do better if you want our votes. I’m voting what I believe in. PPC 💜

Jordan Peterson and Max had a really good conversation. Go check Jordan's channel. General Media no longer knows how to ask solid, critical questions. Jordan was not giving Max an easy time with the questions and Max had some well thought out answers.

It’s because none of the restrictions makes sense anymore after 18 months. People have to look into someone that might be making sense. If you took some time to go through exactly what the PPC are saying before you have a news post, it would help people understand why 800000 Canadian voted for the PPC. It’s not anti everything, you have no sense of distinction.

I voted blue because otoole had the best economic strategy and his mental health plan would have helped my disabled son. However, I agree with Bernier on his views for preserving our charter rights. I also thought that limiting immigration to skilled individuals made sense because I have been looking to immigrate out of this country and that is what any other country requires of me to immigrate there. Not a matter of racism just a matter of they dont have free welfare for everyone there. I also liked his idea for getting rid of red tape for businesses and letting free market grow naturally. It is very hard for small businesses to compete with subsidized multinational corporations. I also thought that his views on true equality and non discrimination applying to everyone equally was refreshing as it seems leftist extremes do just the opposite and actually undermine true civil rights movements like the honourable Martin Luther King jr stood for. Cant fight hate with hate he said only love. Live and let live is the best policy instead of trying to convert everyone to one point of view or another. We could learn a lot from Hindu philosophers because they give a solid example of how a true tolerant culture can exist. No two Hindus agree and they are ok with that. India could never be conquered or converted because its philosophy is living and evolving and it is more about individual interpretation of things than one view versus another

Thank you Chris, I really like your ideas. Especially on equality, hate crimes have been going up since 2012 when the woke movement really took off. I believe it is time now to instead of being hypersensitive about race to start to ignore it and just call ourselves all humans. We should focus on what unites us instead of what makes us unique. What do you think?

yeah i heard my university friends call them fascists, so I checked them out and it turns out they're actually just completely reasonable in every way... excluding climate change. That said at least theyre honest about not doing anything, meanwhile every other party will just lie to increase taxes and get rich as opposed to actually attempting anything since its a net loss in revenue for the short term. Ppc is our only small efficient government party for individual Canadians and their freedoms.

The Conservatives didn't read the room properly during their leadership race.......perhaps if had they stuck to their original outrage with Trudeau liberals and allowed questions from Rebel news then many of us would have supported them.....but why would I support any party that is going to restrict freedom of choice regarding vaccinations......no thanks

Glad I voted for them twice now! feels like the moral thing to do. I used to support NDP for most of my life, even voted to get trudeau in originally... for no real reason other than john oliver said to lol
